Sitting with a bowl with the intention of receiving help is “begging”. Saying they can walk around in their robes and receive help is basically supporting the idea. If they never have to actually ask then-and I acknowledge this analogy is rather crass-wearing monks robes in Buddhist communities is essentially holding a cardboard sign asking for money. I am not Buddhist, but the knowledge that they can’t “earn” a living is enough for me to take the initiative to offer food. I respect their devotion even if I don’t agree. It is, however, a religious form of begging.

Hats off to this lady. I was scammed by this same person while passing through Millennium Bridge. What this guy does is, instantly he puts the bracelet on your hand before you can even react, speaks some isolated words such as "peace", "prayer", gives you a card with things like "lifetime peace" written on it, and then shows off a chart where you have to write your name along with the money..Regret not having been careful at that time. The lady should have called the police imo.

23 year-old Buddhist here. Monks don't go around to ask for money, they only receive food donations with their alm bowls, which is also less common nowadays. Any 'Buddhist monk' who walks around asking for your money/ selling "talismen/ charms/ spells/ you name it" are either: (1) Some conman taking advantage of your compassion. Or (2) Not really a Buddhist monk but a something-else mink, maybe there's such a practice out there idk but it's definitely not Buddhist

@@AKDHFR maybe it's different from what they do on my country, cause they did somehow spread false Buddhism. Some people will come and ask for guidance about some mantra or sutra. Since they didn't know anything, they will say anything that comes to mind. Some of them even made some sort of organization where they would preach and receive huge donation. The money they received went into gambling, alcoholic drinks, and women. Some of them abduct children, saying that they will become little monks, but it turns out they just abused them, etc. It's good to know that it's not as serious in US. But I just have this bad perspective about them because I'm afraid it will become that serious someday. Sorry for bad English :')
