Hey driftor just wanted to say I have always appreciated your philosophical and world views. Even though we may not align on all ideas you do a phenomenal job talking about both sides and trying to be objective as possible. Most problems around fake news (and critical thinking in general) happen due to mistakes in metathinking, not because the news is actually incorrect. Even sites like info wars usually put out "accurate" articles, in that most of the individual facts are correct, but the selection of what to include and what to focus on leads people to incorrect opinions. Knowing when you shouldn't have an opinion is more important than knowing if a source is reliable.

i dont really see the meta thinking part maybe im missing something. but for sure people severly lack critical philosophical thinking comming to conclutions that are not at all logicly sound from what has been actually established thats super common. but ofc there are also issues like people only reading headlines, staying isolated in their ecochambers etc.

I think confirmation bias is the biggest issue concerning the news. You view the world through your own lens and experiences. Hurt people hurt people. I think rejecting and demonizing different opinions is far worse of a problem than where you get your news.

I think the biggest issue is that opinions aren't facts. Also, facts can often be interpreted in different ways, shown through different lenses or frames or even be opposed by other facts. Here lies the biggest problem of all. Even science that has the job of getting to the truth and to factual evidence is constantly evolving. Science has the truth, until proven differently. And even then, there are things science cannot (yet) explain. On some subjects our discoveries mostly show us how little we know.
@VJ2099
@VJ2099 10 ай бұрын
@aaronhagan221 what point am I missing? I don’t think I missed it, I understand what you’re saying and I agree somewhat. Your comment seems to suggest that every opinion is worth at least some consideration. I was just pointing out that sometimes that isn’t the case depending on the opinion. Such extreme opinions like thinking that eradicating a certain group of people would benefit the rest of society or abolishing the separation of church and state in the U.S. are examples of opinions that should not be given any consideration whatsoever.
@Housesider
@Housesider 10 ай бұрын
@@VJ2099 Absolutely, you're correct there. Anyone at any given point can formulate an opinion on literally any conceivable subject, and that includes the absurd and ridiculous. If we mindlessly abide by an extremist edict such as giving literally all opinions equal merit, we are advocating for needless wastage of time, effort, and energy. Proper logical deduction & consideration should also inherently maintain a high degree of efficiency.

Videos like these are needed in order to steer people in the right direction. I kinda cringe when I hear someone say they get their news from so and so on some social media platform when it’s REALLY not that hard to find reliable sources once you’ve started finding out the unbiased and reliable journalists who put it out there. Thing is, not a lot of people want to do that, so confirmation bias is super strong right now with the abundance of info we have.

I think this is an excellent idea for a series or whatever, because the current state of the world is essentially in abject poverty when it comes to media literacy and critical thinking skills. It is absolutely insane how eager so many people are to deliberately bury their heads in the sand and defy the very notions of logic and reality. A lot of people keep mentioning confirmation bias, but the lack of critical thought exemplified by contemporary society is far beyond just that one type of fallacious thought. You've been a consistently great quality content creator in my opinion so I look forward to whatever you will be putting out in the future. 💪

Pretty good baseline way to handle the information overload and trying to get more accurate sources of news and media. The main issue with mainstream news (at least in my country) is not that they are actually misreporting many things, or make a whole lot of mistakes with the things they say or report on. The issue - and this is HUGE in this day and age - is underreporting of certain issues and framing certain parties in a bad light. Some issues, often political ones, just aren't mentioned, at all. Some opposition parties, even though they have been proven to be right over and over, simply get framed in a bad way. This is mostly because they point out issues with the ruling parties, which are the ones suppoting the network financially and even have their own people running the different networks. This is why alternative media has grown immensely over the last years, to counterbalance the bias that the mainstream channels and newspapers have, with either opposing views, or a more middleground approach. Lastly - and I think this is really funny and still somewhat crazy - there have been some independant journalists, that took the time to research ALL of Alex Jones biggest and most incredible claims and fabrications. It turns out, with nearly everything he predicted, some form of it was true, even if it was a bit of a stretch sometimes to link it to actual facts or circumstances. Out of 12 predictions, 10 of them could be linked to actual events, by interpreting it a little more loosely, or being very generous with interpretation. Whatever worth this has, because most of Alex Jones claims are so completely out there and bonkers at times, he rarely if ever gets taken seriously. I just wanted to point out, that it still might be worth investigating into these claims as a journalist, as it might reveal something substantial and real behind it that nobody expected, including Alex Jones himself.

I really like how you have started a dialogue on this. I have been having similar thoughts recently. Being a senior in college at Ohio state university I have come to notice that a lot of acedemia is writing long papers, while yes these papers are very helpful and most times necessary to convey Information. I believe that many times long reports/papers are used as a tactic to mislead or convey biased information because of the nature of fact that no one has the time to fact check every single sentence in a 200 page paper.

Conspiracies used to be a big deal for me in high school, but I was more on the “fun” side of it. The Angelica from rugrats conspiracy is an example. But anything looking to influence or make me question my life decisions or belief in facts or science had to take a seat after I got out of high school. I felt the panic and anxiety from those sort of conspiracies and it’s not healthy for me or my fellow community members. 10 years later, and I have to agree that they’ve gotten REALLY out of hand thanks to social media and technology. I mean, I’ve seen videos that were simply in reverse make absolute waves on the internet because the reversed video made something look abnormal or extraterrestrial. I follow a conspiracy debunking page and post their content as much as I can to help out.

I was expecting the worst clicking a video about "misinformation" given the stigma, and was pleasantly surprised at your level of neutrality. One thing I think you should touch on is the reliability of institutions or perceived institutions. Your adfontes media chart is significantly biased, easily picked out by the placement of shows like Timcast, which makes a point to only cite news guard certified sources. News guard and Media matters are both examples of perceived institutions that have a pretty obvious and biased left wing objectives, and this sites mirror coverage of news sources shows a heavy bias. If anyone listened to Timcast or knows Tim Pools history, it would be pretty obvious that they're a fairly centrist organization, that unlike other shows and organizations rated on this chart, openly claims their personal biases. "Panels of analysts from Ad Fontes Media regularly review representative sample content to rate it for reliability and bias. Each panel of analysts comprises one left-leaning, one right-leaning, and one center-leaning analyst." There is no magically neutral person out there to tell you whos credible. It is also going to be disputed what or who is left or right leaning, because a supposed "right leaning" person on CNN would be mitt romney and a supposed "left leaning" person on fox would be Joe Manchin, specifically because both of these sources would use that person to push a specific point. If this is a left leaning organization, their "right leaning analyst" watches CNN and their claim to being "right leaning" is "democrat except lower my taxes". Long story short these media grading sites are just media sites with their own biases. Everyone has an agenda. Especially anyone masquerading as unbiased. I agree with a lot of what you said, but sticking in the top middle quadrant is alright, but its corporate garbo. A lot of money is behind it, that is likely also involved in these "news grading" websites. The healthiest thing you can do in my opinion is get your "news" from a variety of sources and listen to what everyone has to say to avoid an echo chamber, but leave most of the "did this concrete thing happen" to the big boy media companies. Even then they get a lot wrong and double down on it for their biases sakes. Great video tho. I've been watching you for around 10 years and you usually know how to get the noggin movin.
