my suspicions were correct, i just got a 256gb flashdrive, the brand and packaging looked like a legit kingston flashdrive, it even says usb 3.0 on the packaging… but when i checked on USBDeview it shows usb version 2.0. then i tried putting a 48gb folder into it and guess what it slows down to 0 byte/s right when it occupies around 29gb of storage, using f3 i confirmed that it is indeed just a 32gb drive pretending to be 256gb, lmao i can’t even return this because i bought it online, all i can do is leave a very angry review on the shop’s page

I have no idea how you installed f3. You just went to some screen that I do not know how to get to and started typing.
@engineerbo7 күн бұрын
That is the terminal on Ubuntu. If you're not using Ubuntu, you can find the instructions here: fight-flash-fraud.readthedocs.io/en/latest/introduction.html#installation

f3probe: read_all(): unexpected error code from read(2) = 121 : Remote I/O error do you know why this error occurs when I try to f3probe my usb drive?
@engineerbo5 ай бұрын
I'm unfamiliar with the problem, but a quick search suggests a hardware issue. Maybe try another USB port and/or another USB drive (to see which is the problem)?

I did notice that the drive manager reported it as sdb1 but the f3 run was on sdb? Also was wondering if linux would not be affected by malware on the drive?
@engineerbo7 ай бұрын
sdb1 refers to the partition, while sdb refers to the whole device. About malware, the reason I use this laptop is because it has absolutely nothing of value on it!

Do you use any app or just a desktop option like CMD? Please help me. Bcoz i have 2TB Flash Drive and everytime i put files like movies,music,image etc. It always loss/erased it. I use OTG to put some file to my fake flashdrive. and one more question is there any possible way to fix Fake Flash Drive using Android Phone without a Computer/Laptop?
@engineerbo11 ай бұрын
I used the command line because it turned out easier that way for me. If you want to avoid that, there are other options for testing your flash drive that come with a graphical user interface e.g. h2testw, FakeFlashTest. It depends on which operating system you're using. As far as I know, these other utilities don't help with partitioning your flash drive like f3 does, but really it's better to just get a legit drive. Regarding testing on Android, I don't know of any apps that will do that for you.

Interesting video, one question, Orico is a chinese company and orico stuff is sold on Ali. Do you buy locally so that the importer takes the risk that it is fake?
@engineerbo7 ай бұрын
Yes I buy locally, but I haven't purchased any flash devices from Orico (not sure they even sell any). An SSD enclosure is a little more difficult to fake, since a quick speed test is usually enough to find out.

Unfortunately I've been the victim of faked SanDisk drives and faked Samsung SSD drives. Obviously if the scammers are willing to lie about the capacity, they will lie about the branding, too.
@engineerbo6 ай бұрын
Agreed, it's really only safe to purchase from reputable sources.

Really great video & warning. Everyone should see this. Chinese flash drives almost always have fake capacities. I agree SanDisk is the best.

how to insert a USB storage in a safe way ?
@engineerbo5 ай бұрын
That depends on what you need to do with the USB device. If you're just testing it like I was, then you could try using a sacrificial computer with nothing on it.

@@engineerbo Is ti a good idea tru with a virtual machine?
@engineerbo5 ай бұрын
I'm not extremely familiar with VMs, but I assume the host isn't perfectly isolated from the USB device, so it doesn't sound like a particularly safe option.
