Headed to pick up my first Harris Hawk last week. Said I'd double check the list the day prior. Forgot the f***ing ride on lawn mower. Cheapest one around was 4500, had to cancel the deal. Making enemies in the community before I've even entered the hobby. 🙁 And don't start me on the Panda! Had to pick him up from a fella down the local pub, to keep the bamboo I planted from over taking the entire 197 acre novice/beginner first hawk estate. All in good fun. 😆 Seriously tho, brilliant video. Doing a LOT of research before I even begin thinking of acquiring a Harris and your channel is bang on one of the most informative. Thank you. 😌

My first bird, back in 1976, was a passage female redtail, and that bird was amazing. I was 16 at the time, and had no idea what I was doing. I just "did it", so to speak. Her first season was a doozer. She caught 46 blacktailed jacks, 15 cottontails, several moles, and a snake or two. She had a shot at several peasants but missed. Those were truly 'the good ole' days'.

Falconry has always had me interested for years. Not to the point where I read up or researched it……until now! My wife got me a experience day for my 39th birthday last week. Well what a morning I can say! It was absolutely amazing. I handled a Harris’s hawk a buzzard and a Steppe eagle. It blew my mind that’s for sure. I’m not going to go out and rush to buy one but watching your videos Dave is very interesting and super informative to someone like me. Maybe in a few years when I’m ready I might take the plunge, but until then I’ll keep watching for sure. SUBSCRIBED MATE 👍🏼👍🏼

Excellent video. Thank you. The Veteran’s Administration at my local clinic had a falconry exhibition/demonstration & I am hoping to get started soon. Rn I’m just reading all the books and watching videos so I can pass the state exam for my apprentice license. The only choices we have per Colorado law for our first raptor is a red tailed hawk or a kestrel. So I’m researching the needs of both very diligently. Thx for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Love the videos. Just a girl who loves birds and married men who said no to my love of falconry. Well. No men now. lol. IMO Dolly Parton only got one thing wrong: Jolene, you can have him. lol.

I have a hybrid Redtail x Harris and this is my first season with her. She is an absolute machine. I hunt with her 6 days a week. In the last two months she has only had three days where she hasn't got a kill. She started off slow, which is to be expected, but now she is excellent. Here in Spain the terrain is very suited to hunting with a hawk and fortunately, I have a lot of farmers and golf courses who don't like rabbits lol.

Good advice, I'm a retired Falconer now,when I started in the early 70s we made all our own equipment,I even had a friend who made our bells,other than that they were Lahore bells,but for flying Sparrowhawks ,his bells were Better,smaller in fact I still have one, Hawks are so cheap to buy now,it upsets me, i can remember Harris Hawks in the 80s were a thousand pounds,now 250 pounds,I wish they was still a thousand pounds,it would put alot of these idiots buying them,good video ,the golden age has gone

Just the video i was waiting for.Excellent stuff.Daft question....Could a raptor ever adapt to being a shoulder percher rather than strictly on the glove.I suppose a modified shoulder pad could be fashioned in some way but I've not seen evidence anywhere.Could be the pirate ancestry but l like the idea of a Lanner on the shoulder alongside the glove.
@falconry.davesharpenatureboy Жыл бұрын
Yes but could Lead to various problems …. Stick with the glove and folk will still speak to you hehe

Yeah you can ; my first hawk cost £1200, I was 21 , had. A house and a car and earned £95 a week gross . Just graft and at the end of the day good second hand kit is a lot cheaper than new.
