That is the most logical take on the Kirk cousins contract situation that I have heard. You are absolutely right. You gain absolutely nothing by cutting him. You only Make him a more affordable option for another team while you foot the bill. Terry doubled down in the press conference by saying that they were comfortable with Kirk as the backup, and saying that rumors about them planning to release him were untrue. And so doing, he told the rest of the NFL that if Kirk cousins was wanted, they would have to come get him and pay for him. That also gives Kirk and his camp a picture of what his value is to the rest of the NFL. If no team comes calling, he can either play as the backup on his current contract, or perhaps seek to negotiate a new contract that makes him more tradable and makes another team willing to pick him up.

Blank isn’t going to give Kirk additional 10M. He is going to get released if there are no takers willing to trade.

@robinali6903 10 million to Arthur blank is 10 bucks to you and me. Besides, I think he would rather do that than to pay Kirk to play for another team like say the saints. Apparently Derek Carr is not wanting to renegotiate his contract. Besides, the money is already budgeted. The only reason this is even a discussion is because Kirk played poorly this season. Had he played the way that everyone expected. That $10 million would have been irrelevant. Kirk didn't hold up his end of the bargain! Remember in the press conference, Terry fontenot specifically said that there was two years guaranteed meaning that they were expecting two years of high quality play. That means that the 10 million dollars was already budgeted when they made the contract. So it's really not an additional 10 million dollars.

@robinali6903 I understand what you mean, but remember, the initial plan was for Kirk to play well and be on the roster next year. The $10 million is a roster signing bonus that they had already planned on paying. So it's already budgeted therefore it's not additional. Had Kirk played well this season and been the starter going into next season, he would get that 10 million as they had planned to give him. So it's not additional it is however true that they could save that $10 million by cutting him. But in the grand scheme of things that 10 million dollars against the cap really is nothing. I'd rather pay him that $10 million on the roster then to pay him $40 million to play for a different team.

I suspect all but one of the Falcons 2024 HC interviewees told Blank, McKay, and Terry some sort of rebuild was necessary. We had a couple really good skill positions in RB & WR, an offensive line that is on the decline and a disaster at defense. This was a slap in the face to the FO’s ego and begins to question their own job security. Morris comes in, smokes them all up about how good the roster is, we just need a QB, so for job security and to save face, he is given the job.

I remember The Falcoholic when I was on the TATF online message boards. My take? Arthur Blank cares more about money than the painstaking business of finding Front Office football passionate guys/HCs who care about a Super Bowl . ring . Nothing more. Washington Redskins GM Bobby Bethard was genius at finding Draft Picks/FAS and had a fanatical owner in Jack Kent Cooke . HC Joe Gibbs fully utilized his players regardless of draft picks/FAs. I don’t SEE any of these components in Atlanta. Briefly in the early years of Reeves when Rankin Smith let him have complete control. Blank NEEDS to sell the Team. McKay NEEDS canned.

The roster is already in the middle of a rebuild. You aren’t really doing anything by “starting over” but getting rid of Jake matthews and Grady Jarrett. Most of this teams starting lineup are players under 26 years old on the offense. The defense is made up of mostly young guys except the short term veteran FAs

If nothing else, the Kirk situation is deeply fascinating. The leverage each side has is also adverse to their own position. Kirk can threaten the no-trade clause, but that makes it exponentially less likely for him to actually get what he wants. Meanwhile, the team has all authority to keep him benched but that won’t lead to any improvement of their situation. Nobody is going to have any fun with this except the other 31 fanbases.

We beat them the first game of the season but let’s be real, if not for 2 interceptions by Bates do we really win that first game 🧐
