I was at College when the Falklands conflict was fought . I remember it like it was yesterday . Sheer pride that our lads defeated the Argentine invaders , mixed with great sadness for the loss of so many brave soldiers on both sides .

Some of these soldiers were lads from my school.Only a year or two above me. Still just kids. Playing conkers at lunchtime and many hadn’t even had their first girlfriend or a pint. And killed. Very very sad. RIP Barry.

To those making disparaging comments about the Gurkhas: learn your facts. The Gurkhas consider it an honour to fight with the British. They have a competition every year for a place in the UK army: usually there's upwards of 20 Gurkhas competing for each place. Next, about pay. For many years now they have received the same pay and pension as a UK born soldier. Even when they got much less pay than a British soldier, what they were paid was still many times the income of those in their home country. They are bloody good soldiers and that is why we're privileged to have them fighting with us so please just leave it at that, except for one last question: all of you critics, have you been in the armed forces? I very much doubt it otherwise you wouldn't be making such stupid comments.

"find their keepers, don't they say?" The old adage holds true in this case. The secret coalition UK - chile decided the outcome. Argentine forces were spied and their activities anticipated , except for the Argentine Air Force due to their fast speed barely-over-the-water raids No doubt, East Falkland should remain British however, West Falkland is most certainly Argentine from the fact that lies 193 miles from continental Argentina (Tierra del Fuego) to the condition it is; barely a little more than 100 residents with no infrastructure as opposed to the 3500 residents of East Falkland with their only prep school in the region, the supply shops and gov seat Britain has endured litigation with 4 European countries Spain France Holland and Ireland; in all cases, the issues were resolved by dividing territories. Thus it is appropriate to consider applying that same method here Since the hand of the Creator split the ground in two main groups, it is more than obvious what the fair way to settle this matter should be Plan SRP2018 East Falkland for Britain West Falkland for Argentina St Charles strait international line The region East of the strait including S Georgia and sandwich forms the British Belt and west of the strait is part of Argentina #onceand4all

In 1774, economic pressures leading up to the American Revolutionary War forced Great Britain to withdraw from many overseas settlements. Upon withdrawal, the British left behind a plaque asserting Britain's continued claim ... before argentina was even a country
@jpcodnia9133
@jpcodnia9133 5 жыл бұрын
49 years after that, Argentines went to East Falkland and populated the area; peacefully and successfully, they had a settlement dedicated to fishing under Luis Vernet. For eight years things were normal there until a fight broke out between Vernet and a foreign ship fishing/whaling illegally. Vernet's sanction resulted in the attack by the Americans who went to East Falkland in a war ship, the USS Lexington destroying the settlement and forcing ppl back to continental Argentina. *Source: historical records BBC* after the massive attacks Argentina protested through diplomacy and the case went to court in Massachusetts, the court determined that the Americans were guilty but no remedial action was taken. Meanwhile, early 1833 the British settlers arrived... Both countries have valid points and claims that warrant the right to possess the Falklands. East Falkland for Britain West Falkland for Argentina St Charles strait international line is the proper way to settle the ages long dispute, for the benefit of both parties
@setantii298
@setantii298 5 жыл бұрын
@@jpcodnia9133 The British settled there before Argentina even existed. In fact, there are families living on the Falklands who can trace their family history all the way back with their ancestors living on the islands before Argentina existed as well. They were British then and they still wish to remain British now. The Argentinians have absolutely no claim whatsoever over the islands. Self determination, it's rule number one on page one of the UN charter. If the Argentinians think that the people of the Falklands should move back to Britain and give the islands to Argentina, then the people of Argentina must move back to Spain and Italy and give Argentina back to native south Americans. It's moronic.

**They were not thinking** If they had, then they would have called to mind that a military man named Beresford took Buenos Aires when he invaded in june 1806 and coincidentally after two months the locals ousted the Brits (something many Argentines call an error, as some of the Buenos Aires residents were mesmerised by the sound of bagpipes from the 71 Reg. They left the union Jack in the Buenos Aires museum, the flag has beautiful ornaments along the edge made of gold) galtieri was not thinking, too busy giving in to whiskey and his foreign affairs Minister (costa mendez) was a snake who snubbed both the ppl of Argentina who were treating him like a Messiah and snubbed his British peer waiting for him in NY in order to avoid battle (22.4.82) The only thing that bloody minister did was arrogantly say "nothing to talk about... Malvinas are Argentines" So no, they were NOT thinking If they had, they would have kicked the chilean Intruders from the Beagle canal BEFORE thinking about the Falklands. (Yes, Darwin loved southern Argentina and was there right about the time the British settlers went to East Falkland in 1833 some fifty years after Britain abandoned the region in the late 1700s History can be quite riveting! It affords clarity on the events and so, mistakes come to light

Very good documentary or rather, more of an extended news report, listening to the narrator who sounds like an on-location news reporter. His voice does get a bit monotonous at times, however what makes this report so much better than the hollywood style documentaries is the total lack of added in sound effect or music. So refreshing and really adds to the realism and gritty edge that a war report should have.

ANOTHER JACKBOOT. Incidently, pinochet went to Britain in '98 to have tea with thatcher, reminiscing about the '82 "victory" but after the meeting London police dragged his ass to jail for multiple counts of murder plus embezzlement illegally transferring 28 million dollars to Europe HAHAHA he was only released to be immediately extradited in 2000 !!! thatcher tried to get him out talking to the police but... wasn't enough !!! He had that coming after being the reason why 648 Argentines and 255 Brits died in an unnecessary bloodshed. pinochet was a maggot feasting on dead bodies hence his excitement to see ARG and the UK at war

The Argentinian soldiers were conscripts of only 18 years old and few weeks of training. The best soldiers of Argentina were near the frontier with Chile because Chile wanted to invade Argentina, that´s why the ground battle was so easy for the UK, which has professional soldiers and gurkhas. Only the argentinian airforce was a problem for the UK, many exocet missiles didn´t explote, that was another advantage, because each missile was one ship less for the UK.

A couple of things not quite correct here. It is true that many of the Argentine troops were conscripts, but they weren't 18 years old with a few weeks of training. The 1963 conscripts that hadn't completed their full training were initially brought to the Falklands but were soon replaced by older conscripts that had completed their full training (8 or 10 months can't remember which) prior to the British land troops reaching San Carlos. Source of info is from Martin Middlebrooks's excellent book called "Argentine fight for the Falklands". The 2nd inaccuracy was the unexploded missiles , there were numerous unexploded bombs dropped in the San Carlos bomb alley that were embedded in the ships, but none of these were Exocets.

If this had been the USA fighting against Argentina for a little archipelago over the little matter of international principles and the rule of law, Buenos Aries would have been reduced to rubble and what was left of the country would have been occupied by the US army. That's the way of the USA (although they don't even realise it, which is a tragedy for everyone). But, because it was a war against the British, at least the loss of life was kept to a minimum. At least the only truly ethical outcome was achieved. At least Argentina was only briefly humbled and not devastated and humiliated in the aftermath. At least, because this was an honourable engagement of fighting men, the two sides can still communicate with one another and, perhaps, decide to find a solution to this ridiculous dispute one day. At least there is still hope.

But West Falkland barely crossed the one hundred population mark and lacks everything so these folks have to travel to East F all the time. I doubt that this compares to golf and I have seen US military on exercises. Apart from specialist units of SEALS, I have serious doubts that US Marines or line infantry would find that to be nothing more than a gentle round of golf. The Falklands Islands are 5,650 square miles whilst the State of Hawaii is 6,400 square miles. This means the Falklands is quite a large place and is a strategically important set of islands due to possible mineral mining in Antarctica, which may happen in the future, and also because the ocean fishery around the Falklands is considered one of the richest in the world, which is why there are millions of seals, penguins, sea birds, orcas and giant behemoths called elephant seals. This was a pathetic try by the Argentina to get the Falklands under their control. They had the opportunity to deploy tens of thousands of troops on the island plus they could have mounted hundreds more sorties against the invading British forces.. After all the Falklands were like 200 km from their shores while they were in the same time 10 000 km from GB.

@Shulcyo The Argentinians STARTED this war!! What's so hard to understand about that?! You speak as if the Brits just decided one day to invade the Argentinian mainland! The UK repelled an act of aggression on a British Overseas Territory. The Falklands were British before Argentina even EXISTED. It's not their land, they never owned it or had any claim on it. Learn some history regarding The Falklands and this conflict, because you're making plenty of noise but speaking nothing but crap.

Sorry but you are wrong, it was 5 Bde that insisted that the Guards were moved by sea followed by the folly of leaving the troops on the landing ships while unloading stores first. A certain RM Major nearly came to blows with a senior guards officer over the cock up. Remember the Welsh Guards had been on public duties prior to being dispatched down south and you cannot make up your fitness levels with a couple of weeks at Breacon. The disaster was of the Army's making and had nothing to do with the RN.

Actually, I think you'll find one of the Guards' own Ruperts was responsible for that particular fuck up. He was warned at the time about the weapons grade stupidity of leaving his men exposed to air attack like that , but he thought he knew better. He was very wrong.

@Shulcyo you are absolutely right about the american led imperialistic aggressions on Iraq, Afghanistan and the rest, but not on the Falklands. The inhabitants of the Falklands wish to be under the British government. The Falklands are closer to Argentina sure, so what, Argentina has no shared legacy with the Falklands, there is no history of Argentinian people inhabiting the islands, it is simply a matter of Argentinian imperialism and pride.

I'm really surprised that the UK didn't mount an attack on the Argentinian mainland at the same time which would have put them in total shock and the Islands would have been easy.

sen penn talked of the british imperialism and that we should give back the falklands to the argentines. We didnt take the falklands from the argentines in the first place- point number one. point number two is sean penn should talk first about the us giving Hawai back to the hawaians if he is keen to reverse history.

The amount of unexploded Argentinian bombs hitting their targets is beyond acceptable both from a quality and means of delivery stand points. Anyway, a half assed attempt by the Argentinians to externalize their domestic problems by challenging a nuclear power and NATO member was a brilliant move. There has even been talk that after the mounting British losses, tactical nukes were on the table and the Argentinians were slapped with that option in order to put an end to this embarrassment sooner. On a side note - using Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad" by Shostakovich at the end is not the apparent choice. "Rule Britannia" would have been far more appropriate.

It was a foolish idea to imitate the British army when they took Buenos Aires in 1806... They only owned it for two months. But it took chile being secretly involved in that war. Britain had some of their equipment painted as chilean. A couple of times they even launched attacks from chile! (which was a breach in the plot for chilean dictator had one stipulation: no one to see that chile was active against Argentina) Daily reports so that GB would anticipate Argentina's moves

I'd say the film is pretty impartial; they praise the bravery & skill of the Argentine pilots and one of the pilots told how they were moved from one airfield to another so they wouldn't learn of their own losses, they were given little information about the strength of the ground defences. I'd say the sheer scale of the defeat is impressive, with only 1300 British soldiers & Marines actually involved in the fighting against 11,000 Argentinian troops.
