Fall calls for beef stew, chili, and smoked ham & beans cooked over an oak and hickory fire. We do shrimp, burgers, or trout in a burger/ fish grill basket. Spring is nice, but Fall is fantastic! We had a wood stove in a well insulated house, and it cracked some wood furniture and caused bloody sinuses. Then we figured out to keep a large pot of water sitting on it to humidify the dry air. We put a small humidifier in our bedroom too so we could breathe at night. You guys don't know how lucky you are to have KZbin for income, solar for electricity, and so much more. Yes, it is work, but we had to do much of the same after 8 hours at work, then build and plant, weed, and harvest. Church and Sunday pot lucks or family dinners were our rest. Church families are very similar to relatives coming to visit.

You have sure made your camper more homey. It still bothers me that the State of Tennessee won't let you live in your Amish Cabin, but have NO problem seeing a camper on your homestead as your 'home ".....your upbeat attitude is very heartwarming given how your plans were forced to change on housing. Matt and Cass you are truly an inspiration ❤ hope you have a great holiday season....

Good attitude is the most important thing for powering through the ups and downs---and you have that! It's hard to realize when you are young how young you are (been there), how much energy and power that gives you, and how "soon" in your journey you'll be able to look back on it all with pride and peace . . . we're proud of you!

Living really simple in rural indiana growing and raising a portion of my food but looking to go full homestead in either Kentucky or Tennessee in a year or two! Thank you guys for all the info in tour many videos. Love the fact that in certain counties there you can build your own home free in inspections/ building codes aside from the electrical and septic. Very intriguing

Just curious as to what type of issues you are having with the the planner. One issue some will have is trying to take off too material in a pass. Good suggestion is only do about a 1/16" in each pass. Another issue is snipe, which can almost be eliminated by running a sacrificial board in front of the one you want to use and another one butted up against it and any snipe would take place on the sacrificial boards. Looked like you had both infeed and outfeed supports which is another cause for snipe if you didn't have them. If the planer you are using has dull blades that also could be a problem. One other thing to look at is make sure you are cutting with the grain. Cutting against it can cause tearout. Kind of hard trying to explain that so here is what I copied: There are a few ways to determine the direction of the grain on a board: Use your fingernail Run your fingernail against the wood. If your nail catches, you're moving against the grain. Feel the board Drag your fingers across the board from one end to the other in two directions. The direction that feels smoother is the direction of the grain. Look at the adjacent edge Check the grain lines on an adjacent edge of the board. If the grain lines run straight, you can feed the board through a jointer in either direction. If the grain lines lean one way, mark the direction with a pencil. Look for rays and vessels Rays are dark lines or specks that run between wood fibers, while vessels are small open tubes. These are the best indication of grain direction, but they aren't always present. Consider the tree's shape Trees are slightly cone-shaped, so you can read the grain from the edges or from the end grain and face grain. Plane the board If you plane the face of the board with the grain, you'll get a clean cut. If you plane against the grain, the cutter will lift up the fibers and cause tear-out. The cutter heads are on top of the board so that is the surface you want to determine which way the grain goes. I am not an expert in woodworking but through the years these are some of the things I have learned. I am sure you will get it figured out.

Always fun catching up with you guys . More good steps forward for sure. Spring & Fall are by far the best times of the year. Matt use some wood pushers on the table saw & use something to keep the wood level coming out of the planer, it will mess up the blades with the bending weight. Cheers from Upstate NY.

What would you think about covering your patio before the snow starts flying? You could stack fire wood on the patio and not track near as much snow in the camper, Just an idea, not trying to tell you what to do,

I agree summer was brutal, not only hot but hubby got bite by a tick and ended up in the hospital for a week, bed bound for another 3 weeks. Our off-grid homestead took a side burner. If it was just us and the littles we would stay in our camper full time, but I have my 86 yro mother who lives with us, so we don't want to push a cold winter with her. What camera do you use? It is filming really well!

I'm from NC and I've hosted Thanksgiving & Christmas in a bit warmer than normal weather for Nov & Dec outside! Set up gorgeous tables, campfire, chairs and outdoor games. We had a blast. So if weather permits that is a possibility. You can even say BYOC - bring your own chairs. We did potluck which I did the turkey, stuffing & mashed potatoes & drinks. Everybody else brought all the sides & desserts. Outside means cute paper plates are allowed...yay! Family loved it!!

I was going to mention this as well but these gentlemen already have spoken about the danger of standing behind the board, always position your body on either side of the blade and definately use a push stick when ripping, pushing the board all the way past the blade.

Dig a CAVE, before it gets too cold. You can house the animals in the winter and keeping things cool in the summer. You could actually house yourselves underground with a few sonotubes to provide sunlight. Once again, I recommend SAND BATTERIES and a north oriented lunar energy frame that gathers the COLD of the galaxy, for a freezer/refrigerator. Standing directly behind the planer COULD get you hurt. Also, a wooden 'hand' tool could save your finger if an accident happens. Use it to push the wood, instead of YOUR hand. Love the content. You could get some inspiration from the 'Foxfire' series of books; everything from moonshining to quilt making. They cover plants, construction, horse trading and so much more. It is the 'Hillbilly' guide from Georgia. The series is about 14, maybe 16 books long and is GREATLY INFORMATIVE. The other source I can give you is "Mother Earth News" magazine, available on-line or in-print. In print would be nice to conserve energy on those winter days, when you are snowed in, so to speak. Animals still have to be fed and cared for, no matter how deep the snow. Another reason for the cave and another access to it.
