Gervais and Merchant returned to Xfm in August 2001, after the first series of The Office had been broadcast. However, the earliest surviving radio broadcasts are from November. Xfm brought in Pilkington as producer.[8] The show was originally just billed as Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and Karl's presence was not acknowledged on posters and other advertisements. Gervais and Merchant would speak to Karl about his thoughts on whatever they were talking about. In 2003 Pilkington was officially added to advertisements for the show as over the years Karl's role on the show became more prominent as Ricky and Steve were finding more amusement with his views and personal life. As the producer, Karl had input with features such as Rockbusters, Songs of Phrase, Do We Need 'em, Knob News, Cheeky Freak of the Week, Monkey News and Educating Ricky. Their last show for XFM aired on 2 July 2005, after which they chose to switch the show's format from radio to podcasting.

This is definitely hearsay, but I have a friend who knew some assistant that worked on a few Ricky and Steve projects, years ago. It recently came up in conversation, and my friend heard this pretty surprising story that I definitely hadn’t heard when he passed it on to me. It’s not recent, in fact it was around Life’s Too Short time, either just before or just after the series aired. Ricky, Steve, and a producer (and the assistant, the source of this story) were travelling back to their hotel in a limo after some awards event. Basically they got into an argument about future projects (maybe Ricky floated the idea of an Office follow-up before the Brent film idea was finalised?). It got pretty heated and Steve kind of slammed his fist against the wall. But he hit that button that lowers the window between the driver and the passengers. Everyone kind of naturally looked through the now-open window: little monkey fella sat behind the wheel.

Yes. The origin of the word comes from Hermes and Aphrodite. Their child was a hermaphrodite in ancient Greek mythology.

Why does Karl always quote people’s ages so specifically, when he has no clue how old they are? Utterly bizarre behaviour. Most people, when they are describing someone, whose age they don’t know, will say something like ‘in their 60s’ or ‘late 30s/early 40s.’ Whereas, Karl always gives an exact number, like it’s a guessing game, or like he has the exact answer. Very odd.

What makes it odder is that he can never remember his own age, even at the time, and has to guess it from looking at photos of himself in his own mind.

His brother Mark has that way of talking. In a dole-themed reality TV show when he talks about losing his ground clearing job to an old man, Mark look at him and goes " He looks about ninety...three ".
