I'm so glad Jason got to cook. He really enjoys it. My mom's apple cake 3/4 c. oil 2 c. sugar 3 c. flour 3 c. granny smith apples chopped 1 c. nuts 3 eggs 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. vanilla Mix dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients. Add apples last. Bake in a bundt pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 mins. Check after an hour. (Funny note: My mom had 1 1/2 c. oil in hers and I just reduced it by half.) She had some other recipes that I reduced the oil by half in and they turn out great!!!

My favorite apple cake starts exactly like this recipe but adds 1 cup white raisins and 1 cup shredded coconut. But the magic happens with the glaze. Bring to a boil 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 stick butter 1 cup sugar. Pour over the hot cake while it is still in the pan. Let stand 8 hours or overnight. Remove from pan and glaze will have seeped into the cake. Yummy!

Challa bread is an absolute favorite, its like dessert in itself. I can't imagine how dreamy it would be in French toast, especially the way Jason made it with the fall flavors!! My mouth is watering just watching! Congrats 👏 Jason! Brilliant!

Well I learned something new today! Never thought of making French toast in the oven before. We have that king of bread here in Finland, too. When made into dessert like French toast it’s called “poor knights” and is served with strawberry jam and whipped cream. Well done Jasón!

The French toast is a keeper for sure!! I know with some of my recipes I alter them as I bake, I wonder if your mom could have done that with Apple cake recipe, hmmm. I don't like how most apple recipes call for a ridiculous amount of sugar. The oil could be switched for butter it would change the taste, maybe toast the pecans in butter on the stove or without butter in the oven. Add nutmeg and cinnamon maybe a little pumpkin pie spice.
Wow...that looks amazing Jason!!! Here in UK it would prob be called bread n butter pudding ...ere French toast is bread dipped in an 'egg-wash' n pan fried...yours looks LOADS more yummy!!@ 😋

Ooh challah bread?! I'm less than 2 minutes in and now I know Jason will win! My favorite!
@treasureslayer30492 жыл бұрын
Leslie that’s the consistency of most apple cakes, I think if you would have put it in a 9x13 pan you would have loved it. It’s very similar to how I make mine but a slice the apples super then and always use Granny Smith apples for any baked recipe.
@kimpeters99832 жыл бұрын
Awesome baking challenge. I can't wait to try Jason's Pumpkin French Toast. I make a Apple Streudel cake with a yellow cake mix and put apple pie filling and streudel in the middle. Next time I make it I want to put Leslie's brown sugar glaze over it. Leslie, when you pulled out your mother's wooden recipe box I got teary eyed. I have my mother's wooden recipe box and it looks like yours, overflowing with great old fashion recipes. Many blessings.

This recipe is easy and delicious! It won’t beat the French Toast though but I don’t think anything would! Apple Cinnamon Bundt Cake 2 1/2 cups flour 1 tbsp cinnamon 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 cup butter 1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar 4 eggs 6 Granny Smith apples cored, peeled and sliced 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Whisk first 5 ingredients and set aside. 3. In a large bowl, combine butter, sugar and eggs until smooth. 4. Add dry ingredients and mix until combined. Fold in apples and bake for 40-60 minutes. Top with icing sugar or an icing sugar/water glaze.

So fun! Both looked delicious. If you look up "Awesome Apple Bread" you'll find a sort of similar recipe to your Mom's. It doesn't use a mixer, hand stir, and I use a lot of apple pie spices. I know it is similar because the batter is very thick;; it turns out well though.
