For those who don’t know, the siege of Gondolin happened because the Turgon ‘s nephew was captured and betrayed the location of the city under torture and luckily for the people, not all died because the king’s daughter, Idril, and Tuor son of Huor, brother of Hurin of the house of Hador made a secret passage out. That is where Glorfindel died, fighting with the eagles an ambush of orcs on the fleeing survivors . Thank you for reading.
@offensivedefender58534 жыл бұрын
Didn't Maeglin betrayed city because he wanted to kill Tuor and marry Idril. And didn't Glorfindel died fighting a Balrog in a secret passage and after they both died an eagle saved his body?
@skuruhai0014 жыл бұрын
@@offensivedefender5853 It is stated in my version of the Silmarillion that it was indeed Maeglin (Turgons nephew) who told Morgoth about the location of Gondolin, but it is said that Morgoth laughed in his face because he already had an idea where Gondolin is by spying on Húrin after he had released him from his prison in Angbad, knowing he would want to return to Gondolin, which is exactly what Húrin did. PS. Tolkiens son himself says in the introduction that some of his fathers stories differ a bit because 1) he spent a huge amount of time writing all of this so he probably forgot about some small details like this inbetween the writing 2) Silmarilion itself is supposed to be like myths of old (Norse,Egyptian,etc..) where a part of the story gets lost and then when someone re-writes it it differs slightly Hope this helps!

Fun fact: the armorers of the hammer were actually part of 1 of the 12 houses of Gondolin. Most if not all of the members of the house were once slaves captured by morgoth and their hatred for him was immense. Hence during the battle, they bore heavy hammers or maces (seen there) and heavy shields causing sparks to appear when slashing their foes. They were also the first among elves and men to take down a balrog in the first age. Their leader Rog managed to lead his house outside the walls of Gondolin and pushed the orcs and beasts back to the fields of Tumladen. A fire Drake was loosed upon them and they sadly perished :( and yes they kinda disobeyed orders by leaving the city and fighting out in the plains. Orcs were described to ‘fall like leaves’ once the house pushed through the gates and they slaughtered many balrogs as well

They refused, an d Turgon, the king, did not really take heed, and mentioned that no amount of orcs could take over the city. (I won't go into lots of details, but I'll share a few insane feats of what Elves did that day.) Morgoth sent great forces and many evil creatures to Gondolin, because he knew the High King Turgon had gathered many troops in his hidden city. The legions of Angband were lead by a great fire-drake and Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs. For the Elves, many of the Lords of the Twelve Houses lead their troops into battle alongside Turgon. There was also Tuor, a Man and spouse to Idril, princess of Gondolin. Treasonous acts have been done before and during the battle and I won't talk about them here... but here are the great heroes of the Fall of Gondolin! Glorfindel, Lord of the House of the Golden Flower, lead part of the surviving people (including Tuor and Idril and their son, Ëarendil) into the mountains. There, they were ambushed by a hord of orcs led by a Balrog. Glorfindel and the Balrog fought while the others escaped. The Elven-lord managed to strike down his foe, who fell from the mountain; but as he was falling, he grabbed Glorfindel's hair who lost his balance and thus, both met their doom. Ecthelion was the Lord of the House of the Fontain, and lead troops in the main square of Gondolin, next to the famous fontain. There, he slayed two Balrogs and fought for a long time, often being joined by other captains who retreated to his position. Finally, he entered in a duel with Gothmog and both died while killing the other. Tuor, son of Huor, fought against the traitorous nephew of the King, Maeglin. He defeated him and then slayed five Balrogs during the fall, before fleeing with a handful of survivors and his wife and son. There's a book about the fall, which I would recommend reading. However if you don't want to, there's elements of this siege in The Silmarillion and some other books. Or, you can just look it up online. Anyway, it's one of the greatest battle of the First Age.

hey apollo, wanted to say something about the first age: sorry for my bad English, Im from Europe:) in the beginniing, eru iluvatar, the one, as they call him, created the ainur, the lesser gods ( for he was an high god or something). then they started making music, beautiful music as they created the world. The most powerful of them, Melkor, didn't like the way it was going and started making his own. That was dreadful music, that spawned evil instead of good like iluvatar intended. three times Melkor was adressed at this, and three times he didn't answer. then, the ainur came down on the newborn earth, which they called arda. melkor destroyed the works of the others, and they destroyed his, till he had driven them out of Middle- Earth, to the Undying Land Valinor. In Middle Earth he created Udun, his first realm, which was an basic representation of Hell. There he created the Balrogs, ( remember gandalfs speech against the balrog in FOTR) and trolls and beasts. Then, the other Ainur, which were now called Valar, created Elves. These awakened far in the East at the lake of Cuivienen under the starlight. They marched west, for they had been summoned by the Valar to Valinor. But Melkor sent his Balrogs and captured some of the Elves, and tortured them in Udun, until they had been tortured so much they had become Orcs; their will was controlled by Melkor now. The other Elves arrived in Valinor over the Great Sea. There they split up in three different sections: the Noldor, the most powerful and able, the Teleri, the ones drung to the sea and singers, and the Vanyar, which isn't that much known about. The Elves were the first children of Iluvatar, the most fairest and wisest. One of the Noldor, Finwe, had an son named Feanor. He was the most able of all and could create masterpieces by hand. He made the Palantiri ( remember from LOTR) and the Silmarils. The latter were the most beautiful jewels in the world who had beautiful light in it. But also he was the most proud and powerful ,and fire breathed in his heart. Then Melkor came to Valinor. He came to destroy it. He teamed up with the giant spider Ungoliant, which was some ten times bigger than Shelob, and destroyed the two trees of Valinor, the main resources of light in Arda before the sun and moon rised. Ungoliant just ate the light, she hated it, and asked Morgoth if she could have the silmarils' beautiful light to eat. In the dark, Melkor fled away and none of the Elves and Valar could find him. First, before he left Valinor, he came at Finwe's house and killed him. Feanor wasn't at home, so Morgoth stole the Silmarils and returned to Middle earth, where he made an new realm, Angband. But Ungoliant wanted the silmarils for her own and battled him, and won, but then Morgoth screamed so loud that all of his Balrogs heard him and came to his aid. Finally they defeated the spider, who crawled back to her home and ate herself because of all the hunger that she had. When Feanor returned, he became very angry and led the Noldor, of which he was the king, to pursue Morgoth over the Great Sea to Middle Earth. Such an power was hidden in him that all who heard him believed him. He and his seven sons swore an dreadful oath that they would kill anyone that had the Silmarils. The Noldor came to the Teleri and asked if they could borrow their ships. The Teleri refused and the Noldor, in their fury, started an whole slaughter and killed an good portion of the Teleri. Then they sailed with the stolen ships. Feanor's brother, Fingolfin, was the most forgiving and loving of the two, and didn't partisipate ( if that's spelled correctly) in the fight, for he hated it. For this Feanor abandoned him and sailed without him. Then Fingolfin had to walk over the ice in the north, which was very coslty, but after two years he finally made it. Feanor sailed over the Sea, but then an voice came from behind. He saw Mandos, the God of Doom, on the shores of Valinor, and Mandos said that all Noldor, wherever they came and what they would do, they would always have bad luck, tears and die an dreadful death. Feanor laughed at it and arrived in Middle earth. Melkor, or Morgoth as Feanor called him, set up an big force of Orcs at the beaches of Middle Earth to defeat the incoming Noldor, but though they had smaller forces, the Noldor crushed them with all of their skill. They celebrated their victory and marched inland. Then Morgoth said he would give back the Silmarils at an meeting, and Feanor agreed. But this was an trick, as Morgoth didn't give anything but Balrogs and Orcs. But the host of Angband was defeated and Feanor pursued his enemies all the way to the gates of Angband itself, but lost himself in the fight and was killed by the master of the Balrogs, Gothmog. It was at this moment that the sun and moon appeared and the Men awakened, far in the East. The most served Morgoth, but some, named the Edain joined the elves. They were the second children of Iluvatar and fierce and brutal compared to the Elves. They settled west of Angband in Hithlum and another kingdom which I cant remember. The sons of Feanor were deeply saddened and the eldest, Maehdhros, would take up the role of High King of The Noldor, but handed it over to Fingolfin instead. Fingolfin was an far better king than Feanor. He built great Elven realms, such like Nargothrond and Gondolin, in which his second son Turgon got to live. For 300 years there was peace, but then from Angband an great fire came and an great host of orcs, balrogs and an dragon, named Glaurung the Great Worm, came. The Elves closest to Angband were chrushed and the surprise attack had driven back the remaining Noldor south. Finglofin was very angry and sad at the sight of all that was his belonging to Morgoth, and alone he rode out towards Angband, just like his brother had done before him. All the Orcs that saw shook in terror as they saw him in all his fury galloping over the wastelands. Arrived in Angband, he challenged Morgoth to an dual. Morgoth didn't want to, but in front of all his officers he must. In his hand was the great hammer Grond, the battering ram in ROTK was named after this hammer. Morgoth is said to be as big as an tower and heavy as an mountain. Seven times Finglofin wounded Morgoth, but at last Morgoth killed him, by stepping on him with his enormous feet and breaking his neck. Now Fingon, eldest son of Fingolfin, indeed was High King. He marched with Feanor's son Maehdhros forth in an counterattack, and together with the men of the east they battled against Angband. But they lost due to the treason of the eastern men, and they had to flee. An last escort of western men held back the orcs, but at last were killed. Along them was Hurin, father of the legendary Turin Tarambar. Now Turgon, younger brother of Fingon, who was killed in the battle, was High King. he settled in Gondolin, where the siege began. turgon was killed, then the survivors fled south. in the meantime, Maehdhros learned that two lovers, Luthien and Beren, an elf and men, had stolen one of the silmarils of Morgoth's crown. Beren had died and Luthien also, but the silmaril rested in Doriaht, realm of luthien's father Thingol. Therefore, Maehdros, as his oath long ago had told him, was to raid Doriath, but the elves fled and one of them, Elwing, who was the granddaughter of Luthien, had the silmaril. She had an man Earendil, who was an child in the siege of Gondolin, and he wanted to sail to Valinor for help from the Valar in the losing war. He built an ship, Vingilot, and finally, with the Silmaril from Elwing in his habd, came to Valinor. He told the Valar of all the dead and all the bad luck in Middle Earth and that Mandos's prophecy was true. First the valar wouldn't help, but finally they agreed and asked the Teleri and Vanyar to sail with the Valar to Middle earth. The Teleri refused because the slaughter from long ago, but finally borrowed their ships when the Valar told them to. The great host of the west sailed, with Earendil with the silmaril in his ship Vingilot, which had made to fly by the Valar, and battled all of Morgoth's forces. There were millions of orcs and elves and balrogs and men and the battle lasted 18 years(!) until Morgoth's forces were destroyed. Then the dragons came forth and pushed back the Elves and Men, but also the Great Eagles and the flying Earendil came and an real battle in the air took place. Then Earendil slew the mightiest of the dragons, Ancalagon, and Ancalagon fell from the sky upon Angband and destroyed it in it's fall. Morgoth was captured and threw out of Arda, back to Iluvatar, by the Valar and the Silmarils were held by the Valar. Five of the sons of Feanor had been killed and the remaining two, of which Maehdros, stole the two remaining Silmarils( the third was in Earendil's hands). But they didn''t belong to the Sons anymore, because they had killed the Teleri and the People of Doriath for the jewels and no long had the right. And so, the Silmarils burned them, something they always did when they didn't belong to someone evil, and Maehdhros fell in an fiery pit and died. The remaining son Maglor threw the last silmaril into the sea and began to wander the beaches in despair and loneliness. In the meantime, Sauron, Morgoth's lieutenant, escaped and settled down in Mordor, and the second age began. Now, thanks for reading. This was all memorized:) cheers!

The Uruloki are the dragons, or ''Fire-breathers'' if I am correct. They are mounted by the Balrogs during the Fall of Gondolin. Imagine that, Balrogs mounting dragons like horsies.

There should be a 'Battle of a Thousand Tears' scenario where the easterlings betrayed the elves and dwarves in the middle of the battle and finally drove the elves into hiding against Melkor also the Kinslayings when some of the Feanor and the Noldor were trying to leave the undying lands
@JordanR4 жыл бұрын
Were working on it and were almost there with the addition of Gondolin and the Haladin. Once we have some Dwarf units come in from contributors we can start to make a serious attempt at reenacting the Nirnaeth
