Fall of Hong Kong (1941)

Initially Winston Churchill regarded the territory as a outpost and would not reinforce it against impending attack and reduced the British garrison there to fight the ongoing war in Europe.
From September 1941, he reversed this decision and increase the manpower of the garrison with commonwealth troops as a military deterrent against the Japanese forces.

Some extra info. Did you guys notice that Brigadier John Kelburne Lawson died with a pistol in each hand? During the Battle Hong Kong, Brigadier Lawson's headquarters was surrounded at approximately 10am. He radioed to his seniors that he was "going outside to fight it out". He went into the fray with a pistol in each hand before dying. The Japanese actually gave him a military burial out of respect for his courage and allowed a chaplain to hold onto Lawson's ID bracelet as a POW before being able to return it to Lawson's family. Interesting.

@@taoerche Correction, their Emperor surrendered rather than have his country kill itself. It's a small, but significant, difference. Without his direct intervention, the government had no intention of surrendering. Some of the military were so fanatical that they even tried to seize control of the Emperor so that they could announce that the surrender proclamation was an Allied trick. (Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed).

First battle where the Canadian Army saw combat in World war II The Star Ferry which still exists today, was used to transport troops in the evacuation of the mainland to Hong Kong Island. Popular legend says Brigadier Lawson died, “with a smoking pistol in each hand,”

I was born in Winnipeg and no one seems to remember the Grenadiers as this was the end of that entire unit. They prefer to focus on the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, who helped storm the beaches of Normandy or the Fort Gary Horse Calvary who honour Winnie the Bear as one of their official members. But it's nice to see my home city remembered by someone outside of Canada fondly for heroism, as time would not be kind to its reputation for many Canadians.

My great grandfather was apart of the Winnipeg Grenadiers and he was sent to Hong Kong when he was only 19 but sadly was captured as a pow by the Japanese. He had a wife and a newborn (my grandpa) waiting for him to come home.

Remembering Canadian HK veteran Arlie Enright, who made my golf clubs as a kid. He made it through the attack and was a "guest" of the Japanese till the end of the war, passed away in 1998. He stuck it to those bastards with a long life after all that, living well is the best revenge.

It's more of close to the entire Asian side of the South Pacific and Pearl Harbour. There's Malaysia (formerly Malaya back then), the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand. That's like the equivalence of a Pacific Operation Babarossa. The Japanese military's best feat in its history.

As a Canadian who spent two years in Hong Kong i was amazed to learn that many people in Hong Kong still hold Canadians in high regard because of the Canadian soldiers who fought to the last to defend Hong Kong. There is a MASSIVE and beautiful Cemetery and Memorial where they host Remembrance Day for us still to this day. While I’m as there many High up Chinese Officials and Steve Harper came to the Remembrance Day Ceremony there, it was actually quite emotional. They have a costal defence museum where they tell the stories of the Canadians being told to surrender but they refused and fought to the last man, crazy that this isn’t taught in Canadian schools.

The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence is excellent and a must for anyone wanting to know about the battle. Visitors should also tour the Central Battery and walk down to the torpedo station on the shore to see where the Japanese crossed from Lei Yue Mun.

John Robert Osborn was a Canadian soldier who gave his life during defence of Hong Kong. He served as Company Sergeant-Major for A Company in the 1st Battalion, The Winnipeg Grenadiers during the war. While the Company was surrounded by the Japanese at Jardine's Lookout, he picked up and threw back every grenade thrown by the enemy. When the enemy threw a grenade which landed in a position where he can't to pick it up and return it in time, he warned his comrades while protected them by throwing himself on the grenade, thus sacrificing his life. He received the Victoria Cross after the war. It's quite sad that there are fewer people in Hong Kong have learned the history of the Battle. As I was born in Hong Kong, I must say that every people in Hong Kong should learn this history and pay respect to every soldier that defended this wonderful city, especially Mr. Osborn. P.S. There is a statue of him in Hong Kong Park.

Fritz Chung Agreed in every respect. The national curriculum is doing nothing but brushing our history under the carpet. It is sad to see how many of the younger generations (2000's onwards) seem to neglect and ignore their historical background. Us Hong Kongers should be proud of our identity and heritage, for it was the British which introduced the rule of law, the economic freedoms, infrastructure and technology which has made our city (territory) the great financial hub it is today. One of the men in the Winnipeg Grenadiers got the Victoria's cross, (I think he was the first Canadian to have it in WWII, I'm not sure) when he was holding out with some of his men, when the Japanese threw grenades he would throw them back, until one was too far from his reach, so he lept onto it, exploding, but killing just him, to save his fellow soldiers.

As a Hong Konger, I am very grateful and fully appreciate the British administration in Hong Kong and fully respect the Commonwealth Hong Kong Garrison(CANADA, INDIA AND AUSTRALIANS) who defended our beautiful island from the Japanese invasion that time. Although we were occupied by the Japanese for 4 years it was a harsh time, but most of us stay strong and we couldn't wait for the British government to come back once again to governed us instead of the Communist China with no freedom system. We Hong Kongers loved the way you civilized us and made us the richest and most modern city in the whole of Asia that time. One major reason why Japan saw killing, murdering, and torturing soldiers, non-combatant, and civilians was due to them not being part of the many nations that signed the Geneva Convention, therefore Japan did not view hospitals and medics as such. To the Japanese, surrender was an utter disgrace and like the Nazis, they had a sickening superiority complex that Japanese were better than any asian race in Asia.

My grandma lives in Hong Kong. She told me stories of how she remembers having to bow everytime she was in the presence of a Japanese soldier. She also remembers living under rations imposed by Japan. She eventually escaped to mainland and returned back years later.

Thanks for telling our story One thing that came to my mind though...in the video background there are a few Chinese characters one said “地鐵站” which is historically inaccurate. MTR (subway) starts servicing in 1979 long after WWII. Other than that one all the rest are done correct! Good job
