Noticed a tiny little correction that I most apreciated: Macau was being displayed with a Portuguese monarchy styled flag, but during these events Portugal was already a Republic (since 1910), and changed its national flag to what is still used today (the green and red flag, with the armilar sphere and the national shield, which elements come back from as far as the XII century). Macau was handed back to Chinese administration in 1999 by agreement between the two States, thus ending the Portuguese Empire that was established in 1415. Also, hooked in this marvelous series, keep up!

You should check out the official US army KZbin channel. They did a whole series of videos on the campaign this past summer. This video and their past video have really downplayed the defense MacArthur and his American and mainly Filipino forces executed on the Island of Luzon to the the Bataan Peninsula. The fighting retreat that MacArthur and his troops executed under the relentless Japanese attack is still taught today in most Western Military schools as the perfect way to execute a fighting withdrawal. The efforts of MacArthur and his American and Filipino forces on Luzon to Bataan greatly threw off the Japanese invasion timeline and required the Japanese to send reinforcements to the Philippines to finish it off. The defense of the Philippines at Bataan at a minimum prevented the island of New Guinee from falling which prevented the Japanese from bombing Australia like Germany did to the UK. It also prevented the Japanese from attempting to launch a invasion of Australia as well. The US and Filipino forces on Bataan were inly supposed to last there for 1 month while they waited for the US Pacific Fleet to rescue them. But because of what happened at Pearl Harbor that could not happen. And as a result the US and Filipino forces held off against the Japanese on the Bataan peninsula for 5 months. American and primarily Filipino forces continued to launch guerilla campaigns against the Japanese until MacArthur and his army were able to liberate the Philippines. The Philippines was the only colony really that continued to fight against the Japanese through the whole war. This was because they did not understand it when the Japanese said they were there to "liberate" them from the Americans. Because the Filipino's were already essentially their own independent country by then and had been so for many years already. The American's were only still in the Philippines to help train their troops and wait until the Filipino military was strong enough to defend itself against foreign threats to their independence (such as from Japan).
@krantznikov473 жыл бұрын
@@PhillyPhanVinny agreed re: Philippines, but MacArthur definitely should shoulder some of the blame for the total lack of preparedness and refusal to properly train and equip the forces he expected to conduct his defence at the coast. He would not implement WPO3 initially, but failed to prepare and back his own plan sufficiently, yet once he pivoted to WPO3, it was too late to implement that properly
@PhillyPhanVinny3 жыл бұрын
@@krantznikov47 So I agree MacArthur deserves blame for his mistakes or the mistakes his sub commanders made while under him as they are the top generals responsibility at the end of the day. But I would disagree that MacArthur had a lack of preparedness and refused to properly train or equip his troops. I'll start with the training and equipment. I'm not sure where the raining comes from because it has always been told that MacArthur trained his troops relentlessly. And that includes the Filipino troops as well, he dedicated as much time to their training as he did to the US troops under his command. As for equipment, that can't be blamed on him. He was sent more soldiers than he had equipment for when the Japanese attacked. He was able to supply some of those troops with old equipment but that is it. The rest of the troops and equipment MacArthur needed to execute his defense at the beaches was on the way but would not all been in the Philippines until August. With April being what most considered the cut off date to actually have enough of the troops and supplies needed to defend against a Japanese attack on the Philippines. And then as for preparedness, I would say MacArthur was prepared. He was in the process of preparing for the new defense plan at the beaches when the Japanese attacked but MacArthur did still already know the old defense plan and quickly switched to executing it when the Japanese attacked. In reality he switched to executing the old plan on the first day of the Japanese attack. It just wasn't until the third day that he officially called for the change (most likely due to fear of more spies). But if you look at the US and Filipino troops movements on days 1-3 of the Japanese attack on the Philippines it is easy to see that MacArthur was moving back to the Bataan. That did require sending units near the beaches to delay the Japanese though.

The defensive of Wake Island was so impressive to be honest. Such a well made episode thank you! 🙌
@lycaonpictus96623 жыл бұрын
It is particularly impressive when you consider that not a single one of the defenders on Wake Island was an infantryman. The primary combat forces were artillerymen, supported by air wing personnel and any other support personnel that could wield a gun, including some civilian department of defense contractors. The defenders had absolutely no chance once the decision had been made not to send a fleet to their rescue, but managed to savage the invasion force. The defenders also managed to score a small bit of revenge for the Pearl Harbor attacks, though I don't believe that fact was known until after the end of the Second World War. On December 22nd two Marine wildcats piloted by Herbert C. Freuler and Lieutenant Carl R. Davidson dove into a formation of 6 Zeros and 33 B5N Kate bombers headed to bomb Wake. In the ensuing dogfight, one in which the 2 wildcats had little chance, Davidson was shot down and killed. Freuler's plane was also badly damaged and he was forced to crash land on the beach, but not before he had sent two of the Kate bombers plunging into the ocean in flames. Aboard one of the two was Noboru Kanai, the bombardier credited with striking the fatal blow on the USS Arizona. Kanai was killed in action.

“What can man do with such reckless hate?” - MacArthur probably, in Bataan.
@PhillyPhanVinny3 жыл бұрын
This is what I said in my comment on MacArthur and how he has been treated so far in this video and the last one from them, they really are putting a lot of disregard on his name and not understanding what he did in the war and what it was possible for him to even do: I've got to say your video is again unfairly criticizing MacArthur. You start out by insinuating that only Wake island held out against the Japanese when the US and Filipino (mainly Filipino) forces under MacArthur held out in the Philippines for months longer then they were expected to under any of the war plans. The US and Filipino forces commanded by MacArthur dramatically threw off the Japanese invasion time table and saved at a minimum the island of New Guinea from falling to the Japanese which would have lead to the repeated bombing of Australia by the Japanese and even the possibility of the Japanese attempting a invasion of parts of Australia. The Japanese had to send reinforcements to the Philippines to help finish off the defending forces in Bataan. Those reinforcements as well as the forces already in the Philippines attacking MacArthur and his men at Bataan were meant for the invasion of New Guinea. That invasion had to be held off until later because off the Filipino and American forces under MacArthur's command there. The Filipino's and MacArthur are almost never given the credit the deserve for what they did on the island of Luzon. There is a reason MacArthur is considered a hero still in the Philippines and I will explain that below. The Japanese actually cared a lot about how long it was taking their forces to take over the Philippines and not Wake Island. People want to criticize MacArthur for mistakes he make on the Philippines which he and his staff did make and which MacArthur took the blame for even when they were not actually his fault. MacArthur believed in the buck stopping at the command of the top General which was him in that case. But MacArthur, his staff and troops are now not given the credit they deserve for the defense the executed and for the many more successful decisions MacArthur made during the defense of the Philippines (which was not the case in the past, MacArthur and his forces were given immense credit for the defense they executed of the Philippines). Many people are unaware of this but the fighting withdraw that MacArthur leads with US and mainly Filipino soldiers against the Japanese back to Bataan is still taught today in most Western military collages as a perfect example of how to execute a fighting withdraw. The well ordered fighting withdraw that MacArthur led in the Philippines is what allowed the US and Philippines forces in the Philippines to hold out at Bataan for 5 months which was 4 months longer then the initial plan the US had for the defense of the Philippines called for. People then want to criticize MacArthur for not executing his plan he requested the US change for the defense of the Philippines. That was the plan which called for the forces under his command to fight the Japanese at the beaches if they tried to land on the Philippines. But what so many people ignore is that yes, while the US high command and FDR agreed with the change of the plan to defend the Philippines the forces needed for MacArthur to execute it had not yet arrived. All of the forces needed to execute the plan to it's top level of success were in the process of coming to the Philippines but would not have all gotten there under the time table they had until around August of the next year. MacArthur, his staff, many other generals and historians believed that had the Japanese attack delayed until April of the next year that MacArthur would then have had enough of the forces he requested to execute his defense plan of the Philippines. One of the reasons the Japanese were eager to get the war with the US started was because their spies saw the military build up the US was performing in the Philippines as well as Peal Harbor. That is why when the Japanese attacked in December of 1941 MacArthur quickly realized that his defense plan would not be able to be executed with the forces he had under his command. So MacArthur to his credit changed the defense plan back to the old plan which called for the forces holding out in Bataan until the US Pacific Fleet could relieve them. Unfortunately for MacArthur, Filipino President Quezon and the forces under their command that relief would never be able to come because of the destruction of the Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. This is what led to MacArthur and his men holding out for 5 times the amount of time they were called for holding out for in the initial defense plan of the Philippines. Which called for the immediate retreat to Bataan and the abandoning of all the people of the Philippines. Which MacArthur never liked because he truly cared for the people of the Philippines and which is why he was so admit later in the war that the US and other allied nations liberate the Philippines from the jack boot of Japanese rule. The Filipino people were treated worse then any of the other colonial nation people that the Japanese took over during WW2 because the Filipino people already felt like they were free people (which they essentially were) and so didn't understand the Japanese saying they were coming to "liberate" the Filipino people. Especially when the Japanese were treating them incomprehensibly worse then the US treated the Filipino people. The people of the Philippines had already essentially been a fully independent nation by the point of WW2 for about 10 years already. The only role the US still had in the Philippines during the few years prior to WW2 was the defense and training of the Filipino people. The US military said it was going to stay in the Philippines until their military was built up to the point that they could defend themselves against foreign threats long enough that their ally the US could come and rescue them if they were attacked. The good treatment of the US to the people of the Philippines is also what led to the Philippines having the largest insurgent network of the Pacific during WW2 and arguably a larger insurgent network then even European nations like the French and Polish. But admittedly that is hard thing to compare. And the most important and bottom line of the fighting for the Philippines was that no matter what MacArthur or any general did in that situation the Philippines would have fallen to the Japanese. Yes, MacArthur made errors in his defense there but the correct decisions he made far out numbered the incorrect decisions he made which lead to the the allies force in the Philippines holding out for months longer then the Japanese excepted/wanted. Any major general of WW2 who commanded a sizable force of which MacArthur did made the same is not more errors that MacArthur did in the Philippines. WW2 was a massive war and military officers are not perfect. They are doing their job just like any other person does their day to day job and they try to do it to the best of their ability. And without a doubt in my mind MacArthur can easily be considered one of the best generals of his time. He was not able to show that ability in large ways during WW2 due to the theater he commanded in but when he was given the opportunity he did shine in every military aspect he had command in from WW1 to the Korean War.

You are correct, the Wake Island surrender was a sad day in U.S. history. Based upon interviews with Wake survivors and Bill Sloan's well researched book, "Given up for Dead," the Wake Island defenders were the first military force to defeat the Naval and Marine Forces of the Empire of Japan, and they did it twice. Wake defenders won BOTH the First and Second major battles for Wake Island. During the second major battle of Wake when the Japanese returned in force after a crippling defeat, they suffered another major defeat after Japanese Marines landed on the Island. The Marine Commander, Major Deveraux, had no idea of what was happening during the second battle of Wake, his communications were cut by Japanese bombers and Marines. Naval Commander Cunningham also had no idea of the progress of the Battle. He relied on Deveraux. Major Deveraux "assumed" his forces and defensive positions around the Island were destroyed and his men killed due to lack of communication. In reality, the 449 Marines, 65 Naval Personnel, and about 1,200 Contractors were winning the second battle and slaughtering the Japanese landing parties across the islands. Major Deveraux failed at his primary responsibility as a Commander by failing to leave his bunker and survey the state of the ongoing battle to find out what was really happening. When Major Deveraux ordered his troops to surrender, they were shocked with disbelief. The defenders were in the processing of mopping-up and destroying remaining isolated pockets of Japanese Marines when given the order to surrender. At the time the order to surrender was given, only 18% of the 449 Marines were killed or wounded, with 82% still combat ready. Of the 68 Naval personnel, only 11.76% were killed or wounded, with 88.24% still combat capable. The vast majority of the 1,200 Contractors were also capable of assisting. The Japanese were prepared to fight an estimated 449 Marines, not 1,700 fanatical defenders. Thus two failures in leadership (three if you include Admiral William Pye who replaced Admiral Kimmel as head of the Pacific Fleet), caused the Surrender of Wake, and defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. Would the defenders have won the 3rd Battle of Wake Island? Probably not without reinforcements. But if Pearl Harbor actually knew of the multiple victories at Wake, not the vague and misleading messages sent to Pearl by the Commanders, help may have been dispatched. The Japanese took much heavier losses at Wake. Even they were surprised at the Surrender. Admiral Pye, who replaced Admiral Kimmel, was not keen on supporting Wake Island, and was looking for any excuse to "cut it loose." Because of that, he was never forgiven by the Navy.

True, despite of early mistakes he made during the Japanese air raids. The fact that he held out 4 months longer than what the Japanese expected outweighs the mistake.

Indeed, and my family is a good example of this. My great-grandmother's brother had a chronic illness, but as the economy worsened with the war, he applied for a position iand went to work in a millitary factory, where his illness worsened and he died before the war ended. My great-grandmother (still alive) is sad about this, but at the same time she is grateful that the Japanese reforms gave her the opportunity to learn in school, which had been discriminated against on the basis of ethnicity and class in duch rule, was brought together, and to speak Indonesian as an Indonesian. My great-grandmother's uncle was part of an Indonesian independence organisation supported by the Japanese military. The generation of that time appreciates the good things about Japan BUT never forgets the bad things. However, most people have forgiven Japan through apologies and atonement. Remember all the victims, and remember those who fought for their beliefs.

For Wake Island one thing I didn’t hear that has been mentioned nearly everywhere else was “the Japanese landed relatively unopposed.” One quote I heard about the defense of Wake Island was “the marines of Wake Island were outnumbered but never outfought.” I’d say this video shows that. The marines really gave it to the Japanese there.

I'm just imagining these events as a civilian in 1941. Dark times indeed. While the Red Army seemed to have stopped the Nazi's on the outskirts of Moscow and had initiated some successful counter attacks, that news-- if broadcasted-- wouldn't have seemed like the high tide of the German invasion at the time. Wall to wall bad news from every angle.

There is more to this about the fall of Wake island. The reason for the surrender told to me by others was that Wake island was promised help initially but then that did not happened. The American lines were holding but without any additional support coming from the US Navy they had no choice but to surrender. It was after the fact years later on the failure of the US not supporting their troops on Wake Island.
