There you are!!! 👋🌿 so surprised and glad to see the notification appear! All looks great. Yeah, so many spikes. I can't wait to see the blooms. All those marvellous phals! My little collection of phal species and close relatives is growing, love them! I think that's so cool you have seed pods, and are able to actually venture into that realm of---indeed!---orchid growing. 😀 Please share more...the blooms to come.....or before! If you want another cheap alternative for stakes: bamboo skewers. You can get a pack of like 100 at the dollar store. Easy to cut down with wire snippers, and very sturdy.

It’s been a couple years- can you give us an update on the yellow leaves ? I agree they shouldn’t be a natural occurrence when the plant sacrifices part of itself to grow, they are moving mobile minerals/nutrients. But the easy answer growers give us is usually part of plant physiology.

Can you do a dedicated video on paphs. (Light, water, media, humidity, fertilizer...all the things). I grow indoors and can’t seem to get these to thrive for me- I’m about to give up on them. Yours look so healthy!!!!!

Hi Erin! Yes, I will for sure. To get started though, I have a couple posts that might help you in the short term. I have found the biggest thing for paphs is consistency of watering and finding a mix that takes about a week to dry. Hello there! Amazing plants! I wish to ask how low is your night temperature during winter and how low Phals from subgenus Polychilos can stand? Mine are at 23 C lowest but I have great clossed balcony. There is sometimes 17 C soooo I am not sure to give them that.

Hi orchid friend! I have been going down to 16C at the lowest. I don’t know how low species from the subgenus Polychilos can go...but all of mine are going down to 16C and are doing okay. Some slow down...mainly the species from the section amboinense (the hot growers) don’t like it. But...they don’t die or anything

Do you have a video about what nutrients you give your plants. What pH do you adjust your water ? Your plants look great. Loads of spikes. Looking forward to more videos.

Hi Lucy! I only recently started pH adjusting in May of this year. I adjust to 5.8pH using city tap water which is 7.5pH and has 250ppm total dissolved salts (quite alkaline and loaded with minerals). For ferts - I use all sorts of stuff from the store: 20-20-20 during fall/winter, nitrogen heavy during summer (20-8-8); i also use organic fertilzier - a product called Gia Green - All Purpose 4-4-4 fert - 1/8-1/4 tsp per pot. Hope that helps!

Here...but Not , thanks for the reply. My tap water is about 20 ppm and ph around 6. So similar to yours in ph. I use a plant prod fertilizer and I started adding calcium which helps a lot. I guess your tap water already has a lot of calcium. Thanks again

Your Orquids look amazing! Congrats! Where did you buy the Pot for your big Phal? What size (diameter) it is? I have a Phalaenopsis that has grown quite large and maybe next year I’ll be needing a bigger pot like 8-10 inch and at least 7-8 height. Thank you for sharing! Love your videos.

Jobula I get them at a local garden Centre-they’re 8” or 1 gallon pots. I have had a hard time finding pots online unfortunately, but sometimes you’ll find the good stuff at orchid nurseries

Great video! I’m in Ontario and I’m looking for a good place to order plants and orchids. Do you get yours from local shows or do you know of any Canadian online plant stores? What was the second last plant you featured. The one with the bright green veining on the dark green leaf. It’s gorgeous! I’ll have to google it and see if I can find one somewhere! LOVE your kitty! He’s so handsome! My girl gets jealous when I water my orchids and plants but she has not damaged any yet! Lol.

Genevieve CreatedOnALark I mostly get from shows: Calgary and Edmonton. I’ve ordered from Canadian vendors too though: crystal star orchids, tropical gardens, forest view gardens, paramount orchids, cloud orchids, and a couple others. That orchid is a Macodes petola-jewel orchid. I got it from J&L when they came to Calgary for an orchid society meeting...haven’t been able to find it in Canada though

I had a Dialaeliocattleya Mizoguchi 'Princess Kiko' from the same nursery as yours. Similar colour break. Then, I also had a virus outbreak - singlehandedly infected a bunch of my orchids with non-sterile instruments. Then I tested the plants in a laboratory and the Mizoguchi was also infected. Devastating :( - what virus test came back positive? like what strain or type of virus?

@@HerebutNot This plant was positive for ORSV. I tested around 30-35 plants for CymMV and ORSV,

@@galyasorchids2928 - what a bummer. I recently tested some suspect phals for CymMV, ORSV & PotyVirus - all came back negative. I didn't test that Mizoguchi unfortunately...I got scared after seeing the flower and sent it to the bin :(

@@HerebutNot Half of the plants that were positive had no symptoms at all. On the other hand some of those which showed clear signs for a virus infection tested negative. Thing is there are many viruses that affect orchids and it is simply impossible to test all plants for all viruses. So I think any orchid grower is bound to have at least one plant that is infected and that they don't know about.

@@galyasorchids2928 - that's the struggle, eh? And a lot of things that look similar to viruses can be fungal, environmental, or nutrient related. I think you're right though...given the statistics, there's a good chance that every grower with more than... 50 plants? has at least one infected plant in there collection.

So, little late to the party - I have a mini Phal that looks super healthy and happy but never spiked this fall/winter. Should I try to temperature cycle it into spiking or is it too late in the winter/early spring now? Should I just wait until next year? I don’t want to give it anymore light as it’s leaves are already really dark and it has a small tinge of sunburn on a leaf so I think it’s getting enough sun.

Lauren - if it’s a mini Phal there’s a chance it’s not triggered by temps. When did it last bloom?

Miniature phals might have different triggers because they’re often a blend of species. Given the time of year, I’d probably just focus on good care and then come fall, try temp cycling to 16C nights in your growing area. Right now spring is starting so the temps will get warmer and warmer right as your spike emerges (if you can get them to start) and then you’ll get less flowers because it’s warm while the spike is producing buds

When you talk about cooling to 16c...is that at night only? Or do you increase the temp during the day?

Generally the place gets a bit warmer during the day - but right now we're getting dumped on (snow) so it's pretty cool. I try to keep the low 16C and not much cooler... That make sense? (yes, some days are 16...but if i'm home I normally keep the day temp closer to 18 until bed time)

@@Bugu1969 - up to you. It's probably better to have warmer day temps because the plants tend to grow faster. Mine get cool day & night temps and they do well enough, but they do slow down their growth in the winter.

@@Bugu1969 - unfortunately, I cheated and purchased a systemic pesticide called, "Malithion" - it's very toxic, but I was running into an issue with my plants unrelated to the thrips. merlin5lt1 I think I got it mixed up anyways - it’s Phalaenopsis Li Sun High (a hybrid between mariae fma flava x tetraspis fma alba)
