Ah! Your collection is beautiful! Loving that sanderiana, the leaves sure pop. Thank you so much for the shout-out! I’m going to link this video in from both of my care sheets 💚 Love this vid-I really like that you’ve given the overview of each species/type. Oh! And super smart to secure that L. discolor rhizome to the top of the media. I had buried mine and a bunch of new runners are now colliding with the side of the pot.

My petola is doing really well in a self watering setup with full sphagnum; would highly recommend. Like you said they get very unahppy when they dry out and mine got dry spots on the leaves before self watering. My humidity ranges from like 35-50 so I don't think they really care that much. Mine came looking pretty similar to your longer/elotiated ones and I laid the stem/rhyzome down on top of the media and that activated the nodes for new branches and roots.
@OrchieDee4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I think humidity is not an issue if you keep on top of watering. And if you measured the local humidity around a self watering setup I’m sure it would be pretty reasonable just from evaporation from the media alone!
@maryp27183 жыл бұрын
Can you describe your self watering set-up please?
@mak3myda33 жыл бұрын
@@maryp2718 Miss Orchid Girl and Orchid Room have a lot of videos on how to do it. Basically you have a wicking string inside the media coming out of the bottom of the pot. That pot should be inside another pot without holes and filled partly with water. The wick pulls water up into the media so it stays constantly moist
@maryp27183 жыл бұрын
@Leroy Chan Oh, ok I understand. I use self watering with potting mix, but have not done so with 100% sphagnum. Thank you for the reply.

Living in Ontario Canada, our wi nters get very cold. I have a dossinia marmorata which bloomed at Christmas for me. It now has a second growth with a new flower spike which will bloom shortly. I also have a macodes petola which is growing nicely but has no spikes. I am fortunate that I can order terrestrial orchid mix from a vendor here in Ontario which consists of very small bark, perlite, charcoal & peat. They do well in that mix. No heat mat is required for me & I grow them under small grow lights. I've had them for a while & they seem to be happy. Enjoy these little gems. I think they are underrated.

Cute little gems you have. I have been thinking that maybe I would like to try some of these but that will be awhile as my space rather limited at the moment. I also feel like you and others that have commented on these are really underrated orchids. It may be the small flowers that they produce. I am enjoying this journey with you in your orchid growing collection. Have a great day.

Thank you for all the info on jewel orchids. I only have the lucidia discolor now, but will be looking for more varieties in the spring. Hoping to find some of the more uncommon ones here in the states.

It’s so nice to see a video on these beautiful jewel orchids 😍 Not many videos on them! I have two of the ludisias & was thinking of getting a few more....Thanks for doing a video on them👍🏻

That's a very nice collection you have there! I have a Ludisia Discolor that I purchased about 7 months ago and costs me 35.00 USD. It was in a 2 inch grow pot from a well know nursery. She's growing like crazy and am going to repot her again before the summer is over, I have mine in spagnum moss with some perlite and she seems to love it. My ryzome is not buried. Good luck with your collection. Looking forward to your progress. Happy Growing.

She comes in and out of stock fairly frequently so keep an eye out! Prices are so much more reasonable and I’m sure Jodie would rather see these little babies go to orchid enthusiasts rather than eBay poachers who will just flip the sale for a profit!

A nice collection of jewel orchids. It doesn't really seem to bother them if the rhizome is buried and they will will create new growths along the nodes and will find their way out of the media to seek sunlight. incidentally, I filmed my new jewel orchid earlier this month and will be uploading it at the end of this month for my June Review video.

Found myself a ludisia discolor just before Christmas and she bloomed so beautifully over January. Tiny white flowers. keeping it in very similar to my slipper orchids(potting and lighting) is working great

Wow they are stunning! Totally going to invest in some! By the way, I bought a humidifier on amazon and have noticed an immediate improvement it’s a taotronics with a humidistat and cool mist. Around $100 so not too too exy!
@OrchieDee4 жыл бұрын
I have actually bought a humidifier, just a small one but I’m going to set it up in the Phal room (planning on sticking the new grow tent on the other side of the room and putting humidifier next to that) . I do think it’ll be particularly useful on the drier summer days to decrease the rapid transpiration rate a little.
@noahokin55814 жыл бұрын
Orchie Dee nice! My room doesn’t have heating so I’ve got the space heater battling against the humidifier 😂 I think it will be very helpful on those 40+ days

I dunno, they just don't do anything for me. It is kind of like Hoyas. Everyone seems to be into them now and I'm just meh about them. Then again, I've got an orchid cactus and night blooming cactus thing and most people really don't get why I'm obsessed with plants whose blooms are open for just one night.
@OrchieDee4 жыл бұрын
I think it’s the same vibe that I get from millennial houseplant enthusiasts toward orchids in general. But also you grow outdoors mostly too don’t you?
@michaelmccarthy40774 жыл бұрын
Orchie Dee I’ve got plants everywhere. Most are outdoors, though, yes. I’ve run out of room inside.
@armedgunman89882 жыл бұрын
Just simply throw them in a terrarium. They'll live. It'll even revive the dying ones from a long shipping journey.
