Hi Dani.. greetings from Indonesia❤ I love your tutorials and much respect for all of orchids lover not living in the tropics. You're all amazing. My orchids grow on charcoals, tree trunks, fern roots blocks or simply hanging over the fish pond. Watching your videos and reading the comments made me realize that you are all amazing.

Hi Dani, it's normally very hot in Jamaica, like 29 and above, but my phalaenopsis bloom several times throughout the year. They actually bloom more than all my other types of orchids.

Hi, keep in mind that hybrids that have polychilos herritage, especially if bigger in percentage, will bloom good no matter the temps! Polychilos are what we call the summer bloomers and don't need any cool down 😁

OMG, I so relate to the question with the spend eyes and your answer with orchids sometimes have a surprise up their sleeve. I have a orchid (don´t know what exactly it is but looking at pictures it could be a cattleya) I grew it from a keiki on a nice and big mother plant with around 5 active grow points/canes that would flower all the time. And when the baby had 3 canes I decided to do a little experiment and pulled the canes apart. 2 of them where nice and green and I had high hopes and confidence that both will continue to grow, which they did. the third one was already quite dried up but I put it in the pot anyway as it still had good roots and now it has a grow point right above the tuber/stem? where the old flower spike came out :D

The atmospheric change is crucial for "promoting" phal spikes, your subscriber may never know or may have missed the information on the control environment's parameters in the article, but the empirical experience I have is that the phals I grow near my window in my guest room send out bloom spikes whenever the autumn breeze arrives every year, while those grown in my room can hardly send out spikes (my room is a rather closed space, the room temp drops only when the outside temp drops significantly). I haven't read MSU's paper (I should read it to learn the details), so I am not sure about the controlled variables in the study, but my opinion is that the the atmospheric change does a difference for phals' flowering, be it as a result of temp drop or change in ventilation.
@jhndr0nia
@jhndr0nia Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t seem like that was studied in the paper. The only two take-aways are that a day temperature of 29 C inhibits flowering in Phalaenopsis (at least in the two used clones) and that a difference between day and night temperature doesn‘t induce flowering. They didn‘t perform an experiment to find out if a decrease in temperature during one time of the season affects spike initiation. And of course,as you also said, it makes sense. Sure most commercially available Phals are hybrids but they still usually don‘t flower year around so there must be an environmental factor that triggers flowering once a year. An overall temperature decrease would make sense because it‘s usually cooler during the rainseason in their natural environments. Which means that the plant gets a sufficient amount of water to produce flowers and later seeds after successfull pollination

Here in Canada, my phals spike in late December/early January, night time temp 0-5C, daytime indoor 10-15C. Like clockwork every year. two years ago we had a major climate event and a heat dome that sat over us for weeks in the middle of summer, nighttime 27C at least, daytime above 35C. My most active plant went nuts and spiked like crazy, the rest kept going like nothing at changed.

I always have up to 80 degrees F during the day and 65f at night and all my phals have rebloomed. I think it depends on how healthy the orchid is if it will rebloom. I have been getting them to rebloom sometimes twice a year (not trying).

I live in the desert and use ac constantly to maintain 24°C. The outdoor temperature during the summer ranges from 37°C-51°C during the day and 23°C-37°C at night depending on the daytime high. In the fall, the daytime temperature is still 26°C-32°C but the nights drop to 15°C-24°C. To get my mini phalaenopsis to bloom, is it sufficient to put them outside at night and bring them indoors in the morning? Even in the winter, with the heat/ac turned off the apartment doesn't drop below 22°C with the windows open. I'm a beginner who has been binge watching all of your videos since I brought my sunburned rescue orchids home 4 weeks ago. So far all of them still have a few healthy roots and I have seen new root tips growing and branching out of the remaining roots. So far, they're in pots with mostly sphagnum moss covering the roots at the top in order to keep the moisture inside. They were drying out too quickly with the repotme AAA gold imperial mix. I had to moisten the top of the sphagnum moss 2-3 times a day in order to keep up with all 5 of the fans running to try and offset the heat from outside as well as the Sansi high intensity led grow lights that I use with some of my tropical plants that require high light but can't withstand the outdoor heat and would fry if even the morning sun touches the leaves. Do you think that is cold enough to make my mini phalaenopsis bloom or will they always be in vegetative mode?

Only thing, with the BBQ charcoal, to look out for is that there's nothing added to it (chemicals) to make it burn better/faster. It'll be interesting to see how my phals react to the constant up and down in temperature that we're getting at the moment (I'm in Germany). I usually keep them partially shaded on my south/west facing balcony (always super sunny and windy!) until the nighttime temperature is constantly under 12°C. Last year the temperatures were much more stable around Mai/June and in the winter 13 of my 15 phals were in bloom.

hey Danni! Regarding the age of the phals by counting leafs, I would say it's fully myth because asides from your points, you would also have to know the exact number of discarded leafs. And we'll never know if the she had an older part of the stem trimmed. It's just too difficult. And the growing rate... just as you, I usually get 1 or 2 leafs per phal a year, but I also have an exception (a mini phal. lech) that's currently starting to show a 7th new leaf within 6 months of vegetative growth with me (got her in bloom and the flowers lasted 6+ months). So, the only moment in which you could tell a minimum age is the 1st bloom probably? but for the actual years of the plant?

Myth?? Hello Dani, Greetings from South Georgia, USA. And thank you for all your helpful videos. I am new to orchid growing and whenever I have an issue I search through your videos. I’m not sure I am posting this question in correct place and you may have addressed it before. Am I safe from thrips and other pests if I keep my orchids indoors and quarantine new orchids in another room of the house? Also, how long is a “safe” quarantine period? Thank you for any help! Yes, I just watched your thrips video LOL - definitely got me thinking

Myth or Truth? If the newest fan on my paphiopedilum keeps growing roots way above the medium, the entire plant won’t survive, because the old fan will die off and the old roots will not support the new fan. I’ve watched all your past videos where you put a cup around a keiki on your paph and we’re able to save it, but mine is not a keiki, it’s just a very tall fan with roots that continue to start and dry out in the air. I’m afraid I’m destined to lose this orchid.

Me sitting in a freezing room saying don’t put the heating on don’t put the heating on 😂 mind you half my orchids are recovering from being seperate from keikis and the most others are still in bloom from spring because they got confused about my house temp. So I don’t actually know if there are any more willing to bloom 🤷‍♀️ 😂

Limestone is prob not a great choice. It is a soft stone and it leaches minerals into water. It will also change the pH. Volcanic rock is a better choice since it’s less reactive and lighter.

Myth or truth can the radiation in led lights that we use to supplement light to our orchids cause damage to our eyes in the long run?
@MissOrchidGirl

Hi, grow lights don't output UV, as far as my knowledge goes, most go down to max 400 nm while UV wavelength is below that. So it's not damaging to us more than any decorative led bulb in theory. But best to check the manufacturer details on your product!
