We just bought 5 acres and starting to build, in Central Ohio, zone 6a, a former corn field with overgrown edges of honeysuckle and poison ivy, which we have battled for months now. We are putting mulched borders of many trucks of arborist woodchips along the edges and thinking about getting small trees and shrubs from the water and soil conservation society. Designing a mixed border hedge for privacy is a real challenge, both the design and future upkeep in terms of watering and weeding. Any advice will be welcome. Thanks!

Hey Annie, thanks for commenting and the question. Couple of assumptions. One, you have form of transportation to the area like a itv or tractor. Two, you have a portable water source to haul water to the developing newly planted mixed hedge plants. With all the chip drops you are receiving and if that is where the hedge row will go, you should consider a additional fertilizer supplement to off set the nitrogen robbing chip decomposition. As long as Spring, summer and Fall you can provide supplemental water for the first year seedlings will establish rapidly. I would say a 50 gal container and a 12 volt pump system can make the watering easier. Keep the mulch layer thick and expand it to keep weeds at bay.

Thanks for the quick response! No machinery or water on the property yet, just spreading the woodchips with a rake and watering plants with gallon water jugs. We only moved plants from our old house but have not massively planted yet. Drought was too tough on new plants but they are still alive, next year, we will have a well. I have been watching your videos with interest on adding retaining bolders for creek erosion, clearing wooded areas, creating a driveway, etc, which we need to do too. Currently not much we can do with just basic hand tools, but we wanted to start early. Having more acreage is overwhelming at times, and I am not great at design and need to plant a mixed border for screening that does not look like a bunch of soldiers. Your property is beautiful.

@Annie-lv8sn Thanks for the compliment Annie. Acreage can be daunting. The hedge row can be a combination of natives and ornamentals with varying heights and nature sizes. Spacing will be important as well as like water needs. You have a creek too? Lucky water source. Can you pump from it to the plantings next year?
