Excellent video. Great balcony. On your sync problems. Here are some thoughts. The first one is that the built-in Bluetooth of your iPad (or other operating system) is not made for MIDI. It is outperformed by device that are, like WIDI. So, the hardware solution is to bypass the onboard Bluetooth of your operating system with either a WIDI Uhost or a WIDI Bud Pro. A second solution might be clearing the Bluetooth connection cache of your mobile device. You simple delete all WIDI devices from your general Bluetooth device listing, turn Bluetooth off and on, and establish a new pairing with your WIDI device. Hope this helps 😉

@@JakobHaq also on syncing, I can tell you what we have to do internally in rare occassions. When you transmit MIDI over USB, it is really fast. Bluetooth is slightly slower. And traditional MIDI I/O (DIN/TRS) is the slowest. So when we go from USB (WIDI Bud Pro or WIDI Uhost) via Bluetooth to MIDI I/O (WIDI Master / WIDI Jack) we sometimes have to slow down the transmission, otherwise your standard MIDI devices cannot keep up with the speed of USB and Bluetooth. I think, maybe, a similar process can happen when syncing software with hardware. As MIDI 2.0 is based on USB/Bluetooth 2-way communication, it might be, with its backwards compatibility, that the clever people who design this, thought about it. Nevertheless, MIDI 2.0 looks very promising, and it seems we are finally getting close to launching actual products. I know for a fact that Amenote released there Protozoa MIDI 2.0 testing tool for developers last year, it also includes a slot for WIDI Core 😊👌 www.midi.org/component/zoo/item/protozoa

I have the thru6 and it is the perfect solution for my growing pile of hardware. I’ve got the midi from 4 synths plugged in plus a keystep. I just open my ipad nearby and it’s talking to my whole setup. And recently I added a 4-in audio interface so with one cck+usb I’ve got it all routhing back into the ipad for further polishing. Incredible how my cable woes are just gone now.

CME has a good vision. I just remember when they were one of the few Bluetooth MIDI keyboard vendors around, and their 25-key controller with the Apple design aesthetic was $250. So expensive. I had to wait a few years until the Korg nano BT keyboard was released, because it checked all the boxes for my controller needs.

MIDI has lasted so long because it’s so simple, it’s a serial connection that doesn’t need to be very fast. Just sending and receiving over two pins each way (only 3 pins in a DIN connector are usually connected with the 3rd for ground). It is fast enough and has enough data for most uses (jitter and wonky clocks aren’t midis fault!). Bluetooth is a tip, a big scrap heap that has more and more junk piled on top until nobody is even sure what it is really for anymore. If the Widi adapters bypass a potentially horrible implementation or mess of drivers (hello Korg) then I’m guessing that’s why they work so well, as long as the device gets a DIN signal or class compliant usb midi signal it doesn’t care where it’s coming from. MIDI 2.0 is an answer to a question nobody asked, I would put money on it never going anywhere because midi is simple to understand and write code for, I’ve yet to see a reason 2.0 is genuinely better other than nebulous “your synths will talk to each other’’ nonsense. They already talk to each other, and in a language I can read so they can’t say things about me or my music! Bluetooth midi shouldn’t be this difficult, but it’s thanks to companies like Korg releasing utterly broken software or wiring things the wrong way round (I know it’s within spec, but use common sense Korg! Nearly as bad as Roland..) these devices are necessary, and I’m glad someone is making them and doing it properly!

I couldn't find these when I needed to buy, and ended up with the Yamah MD-BT01... which works fine for my use cases. If i expand the setup I'll go CME, looks a lot more powerful. Favourite use cases for me is connecting any real hardware midi synth to the OP-1 Field, or of course my iPad mini / Logic. My Commodore 64 with dual SIDs and MSSIAH only has midi in, so can't power the dongle, but I've connected the Out to a small casio midi controller powered by AA's just to power the dongle - then can sequence the C64 from the OP-1 Field. Pretty cool.

❤❤perfect timing Jakob. Looking at Bluetooth dongles to get my Pacer wireless. The AirTurn BT200-S6 has such lousy switches that bounce; giving me multiple page turns.

I had noticed a couple years ago the arp wasn't syncing on my NanoKey2. I researched a bit and somewhere I found it details that pointed out that bluetooth midi spec doesn't transmit sync like wired midi does. Maybe a newer midi spec will now support it, because bluetooth has improved a lot. Or maybe some devices just ignore the spec and send it anyway.

That’s some very cool gear, especially the widi core. Widi core is a dream for home brew MIDI controller projects, especially at $30. Is there any latency noticeable Swedish moo? You didn’t mention any from widi to iPad. Now to start learning some Arduino code, 🐄 backed the wrong horse and learnt micropython 🤷.

Other than having some sync issues sometimes, normal latency between iPad and widi dongles are super low. I often used ran a session with AUM and then 1-2 hardware groove boxes. It’s so nice.

I recently got the WIDI master so allow me to play my MODX from out in the room at sound check. I intended to do it from my iPad, and although it worked to a point, it’s not really practical. I need to get a small battery powered keyboard with BT built in (if such a thing exists).

Yes there are several small battery powered keyboards with BT built in. The one I’m using in the video is the nanoKEY studio. Another popular one is the AKAI MPK MK3. Then there’s Korg microkey air and more. I’ve started seeing some unknown brands making some too but I can’t speak to their functionality as I haven’t tested any of them. Just Google Bluetooth Midi keyboard and have a gander. 👍

HI Jakob, thanks for this video, good to know these devices work well on the whole. Just a note about CME and batteries - I have an X-Key Air 25 and the battery is dead (no more Air for me). I emailed CME to ask about a replacement and not only did they say that they didn't supply parts, they didn't even give me the specification of the internal battery. After opening it up I discovered a little lithium battery but have not found a similar one online yet, and I've looked alot! Looks like sustainabiliy is an alien concept to yet another tech company... Bad CME :( Amazing Nature fact #2: did you know that some plants can detect the sound of insects buzzing in flight nearby, and can increase their nectar production by 20% in 3 minutes once they've 'heard' the sound! Their petals act as sound reflectors... from a recent scientific paper. And as usual, it's still the tip of the iceberg wrt how Nature works. Good Nature :)

Just leave it to me. If it’s not going to work it’s not going to work for me. Won’t connect my iPad Pro (16.5.1) to my Nektar Pacer Foot Controller. Downloaded the app and video from the manual and I will try that when I get home. Maybe I need to update the firmware but can’t do that unless I’m connected. Sucks not having internet at home.

No it does not have to be master. Either unit can be master, you choose basically. Yes you can use whatever you want to control whatever you want. I’ve used multiple combos controlling my livens 8bit, XFM, beats, and IK uno, uno pro, uno drum, Roland mc-101, JU06a etc. The user decides master and slaves by setting clock in and clock out on all devices. As a rule, I don't use Bluetooth unless it's absolutely necessary. It has been found to create a vulnerability to hackers who are using software to break into computers via Bluetooth connectivity. Ars Technica wrote about this several years ago. It's known as "bluesnarfing." But, the fact that the range of Bluetooth is quite limited makes most home usage safe....as long as your neighbors aren't hackers.

You might be right on this for general Bluetooth. Luckily WIDI devices can only handle MIDI messages. It would be stunning if someone hacks you via MIDI ;-)
