It's really nice to hear from someone who loves Eleanor. While I don't know if I'd put her in my top three, Max is definitely in there for me as well. I'll never comprehend how her character gets so much hate when she's so interesting and well written. But on rewatches I feel like I've come to understand Eleanor more and more, and her story really is a tragic one (fuck Woodes Rodgers). I agree with your larger point about S1 too. While I would probably say I think the show got better with each season, the first is still *very* good. Really glad to see another essay about this wonderful show, there aren't enough out there.

Black Sails is one of the best series to rewatch, there's nearly no other I've rewatched with such interest and attention. And it was precisely the rewatch that made me like and understand Eleanor's character (though I still believe she could have been handled better in some instances.)

Very good analysis, I agree and disagree in equal measures. I watched the first episode and I was hooked, it sets up the characters and style that will continue for the whole show, the season finished on a high and I had to wait a year for the second season, and wow I didn't think it could get better but it did each season, better performances, fantastic character development. Great writing and acting helped. I belive a lot of that came down to- for the first season the producers were saying be more like game of thrones, but from the second season the writers had free rein.
