49:03 Harry repeating what Ron saw in the Mirror of Erised because he has no idea whats normal for a kid his age to desire is such a heatbreaking but overlooked detail
@Celeborn938 ай бұрын
I feel like it's more likely that it was just the first thing he thought of because he knew he had to come up with a lie, fast. So he used a fresh memory as reference, as most people would. That's how most brains are wired. I mean, it could be both, but i don't really feel like there was an intentionally deep meaning there.

Erised is Desire spelled backwards. I wonder how many people caught that.
@chris...94978 ай бұрын
I think that's something of a stretch. Under pressure and panic, the mind finds a recent experience that will fit the parameters of the response required. Under less pressure and more time, the mind has an opportunity to invent something more original but not in the situation Harry was in at that moment.

Bit of trivia from the books that was not included in the movie. Professor Quirrell was not well respected, and the students were known to throw snowballs at the back of his head, meaning that Voldemort was constantly being pelted in the face.
@Armaldo4688 ай бұрын
That’s awesome. I have yet to read the books, though I kinda want to eventually. I love the thought of Lord Moldybutt getting pelted like that. Quirrell seems like a perfect fit for Voldemort, so I’m mildly pleased to hear nobody liked the little wretch.
@CarolinePhoenixMe8 ай бұрын
Some facts out of many, many, many: 1) The movie events take place in 1991 (it is not directly stated in the books, but can be calculated). 2) While designing the Dursleys' house, the creators intentionally selected the ugliest furniture they could find - to increase the impression, so to say. 3) Pay attention to the street view before Uncle Vernon warns Harry about the "funny business". All the houses and cars look the same, because here, nothing weird is tolerated. 4) When Harry's scar hurts before the Sorting Ceremony, it's because Quirrell is standing with his back to him (and, correspondingly, Voldemort facing him despite being hidden). Also, when Hermione sets Snape's cloak on fire, it is clearly shown that Quirrell trips and falls, breaking the eye contact and therefore releasing Harry's broom. Ravenclaw here, by the way

I’m sure even more baffling for Harry is that everyone is treating him kindly/with respect. He’s so used to the Dursleys, that’s a huge change. The books add so much to the movies. With the sorting hat, in the book it indicates that all that talking while it is deciding things is only heard in the mind of the person who it is being sorted. That is also how it sorts people - the hat is telepathic so it looks at the mind to see what sort of person they are and chooses a house that is best suited.

But more than that. He made a puzzle where there were 2 forces checkmate sequences. Ron didn't have to sacrifice himself. But the only other way to win would have sacrificed Harry. Ron not only chose to sacrifice himself so they could win the game, but he chose to sacrifice himself knowing that there was another way to win Unfortunately, the movie never gives you enough of a wide shot of the board for you to see any of this. But the puzzle is easy to find online. There are even youtube videos about it from chess channels

The movie skips a bit about how the Hat chooses. In the book, there's a song it sings that explains the houses. Gryffindor prizes courage, Ravenclaw prizes intelligence, Hufflepuff prizes hard work and fairness, and Slytherin values ambition and cunning. Some kids are apparently easy to sort, others, it has to deliberate on. It was Gryffindor's hat to begin with.

I think the reason Hermione knows so much is because both of her parents are Muggles, or non magical people, so she feels like she has to work harder to prove herself. There are some at Hogwarts who believe that only those who come from purely magical parents should be allowed to practice magic or attend Hogwarts. Like Voldemort, or anybody in Slytherin.

Some truth, although being intelligent and well-researched, even a know-it-all, was her personality even before knowing about magic. In the movies she also was given a number of Ron’s lines, I’m not sure why. There’s a lot he knew simply by growing up in that world that she couldn’t have, and it made him look like an idiot, which he wasn’t, and her like she was a superhero, which she wasn’t. She often panicked under pressure and did things wrong, for example.

I'm reliving it again through them.

Hermione was the one who panicked in the devil’s snare plant, Ron literally had to remind her that she was a witch and could conjure light/warmth (her signature flames) whenever she wanted. It’s so frustrating how they gave a lot of Ron’s lines and information to Hermione, it really changed both characters somewhat. She wasn’t perfect and invincible, and he was way more knowledgeable than the movies make it seem.

My kid called someone a muddblood, it's not a real slur but I refuse to raise a slytherin

A Slytherin doesn’t equate to being a bad person tho…

Fun fact: The chess game they had to play in order to get to the philosopher's stone was actually a real, constructed position created by International Master Jeremy Silman. Unfortunately some vital scenes were cut, which makes the position as it appears in the final cut of the movie a bit confusing, but nonetheless it's an interesting piece of trivia.

I’m like two minutes in on the video but I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Y’all are just so cute to watch.

How wonderful! I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! Remember too that the amazing Alan Rickman was also in 'The January Man' (1989) with Kevin Kline and 'Sense and Sensibility' (1995) with Kate Winslet - greetings from Australia! Karen 🌷

For the castle, the silhouette actually changed several times over the movies as they kept trying to make it more iconic. But they did take pieces of real architecture and piece them together to make it. And they actually used real historical sites to film the scenes in the classrooms and hallways!

The hat was from the founder of Harry's House: Godric Gryffindor. All House founders gave it part of their personality, so it could do the sorting in the Future, since they wouldn't live forever
@MarelorMoon8 ай бұрын
It's also said in the books, that the hat takes your choice. Harry for example shows certain qualities of Slytherin, especially explained in later books, but He chose Gryffindor. Hermione had to chose between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw as well

They actually took lines that Ron said in the books and gave them Hermione. Ron isn’t as goofy in the books as they have him in the movies

Apparently some of this was filmed in Oxford. I heard the dining room was based on Christ Church college's dining room, and some parts of the college outside architecture were based on Magdalen college's quads

Movies left out a big side story about Herminones teeth, she had huge teeth but since her dad's a dentist he didn't want her to fix it with magic, but malfoys cursed her and made her teeth way bigger, the school nurse fixed it and herminone told her just fix em all together

I've liked Alan Rickman ever since I watched Die Hard and he was great in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Kevin Costner). He was also in Galaxy Quest and many other movies that I can't recall at the moment! I also loved his voicing of the robot in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

21:50 it finds what connects to you the most, weather you se it or not and fun fact is in the books it took the hat like 5 minutes to decide where Hermione should go(Gryffindor or Ravenclaw)

I'm so excited for this! I've been subbed to you for a while and Harry Potter is my absolute favorite franchise, so this is going to be great! What's interesting about this series is that it grows in maturity and complexity over the course of the books/movies, which gives its target demographic a chance to grow up along side the characters while giving the older audience something to sink their teeth into as well. :)

Hogwarts is the British school for wizards and witches and is located somewhere in Scotland. There’s also a French school called Beauxbatons and a North European school called Durmstrang. Their students visit in the 4th movie. Most other schools are only mentioned in background materials. Ilvermorny is the North American school that’s loosely modeled on Hogwarts in structure. It’s mentioned by name in the Fantastic Beasts prequels. Koldovstorets is the Russian school. Castelobruxo is the South American school located in Brazil (mentioned in one of the books but not in movies). Uagadou is the African school located in Uganda. And Mahoutokoro is the Japanese school

welcome to the family. About the sorting hat... he does a sprt of magoc that is called legilimency, meaning he looks into the gead of the students. Each house has special traits (neither good nor bad) and the hat decides which trades are the most prominent at the time and sorts you into the hpuse that matches the best. One thing to keep in mind - things are not always the way the look. Just keep that in mind. Greetings from Germany also... I am a Slytherpuff - meaning... if I do the dorting quiz hobestly I would be Hufflepuff. I always managed to get sorted into Slytherin, though. AND the sorting hat would take my choice into account, so Slytherin for me

The actor who is the wand maker is John Hurt, he was in the movie Alien and had the Alien come out his chest and repeated that scene in the parody film Spaceballs. He was also in the film 1984 where he was the one to fight big brother and then in the movie V for vergence where he was big brother.
