Always love your general knife talks; especially your philosophy of carry (big knives tend to freak people out) and down to earth view of knives as either fun (larger knives), practical (specialised) or sufficient for the everyday person (utility - most quality knives).

I really appreciate your views and position on all of this “survival” and “bushcraft” stuff. We seem to get caught up in what is Best for this or that....well, we need to look at our specific needs, uses, and reasonable expectations. Most of the time a simple mora would get the job done, so we need to stop concerning ourselves with every little detail. Because of this thought process....I have come to a very similar conclusion. The S1 Pro and a swiss army pocket knife is my choice for emergency go bag.

For me survival is multitasking. You do not want to carry many blades when you go camping by yourself. -Cut wood, with grain or against it. -Have a long edge, to make batoning possible. Also always a sharp place somewhere to be found. -Good handle. This is super important. It should also usable in well below freezing (No bare metal, no heat inductive material) -Preferably stainless steel, but with reasonable toughness. -Somewhat easily sharpened. I have the Jääkäripuukko but I noticed I need 1 in the car so looking at S1 Pro to switch to.

One nice "side effect" of owning several knives is that you end up with several sheaths, so that one knife may fit more than one sheath. For instance I recently purchased a No. 14 knife by Casstrom (Swedish shop that started their own brand recently) , and it turned out my S1 fits nicely into the No.14's leather sheath (dangler style). And there I was just about to spend the same amount on a custom leather sheath for the S1. :)

I think the s1 is also my favourite knife. Its just an absolutely beautiful blade and its the perfect size. I have so many different blades but i love the s1 more than all the others. Its just so well designed.

Well said, I love my S1. Its taking me a while to switch to convex grinds, I need to make myself a better strop. But I think I'll be happier for making the switch.

I just spent my Christmas money on an S1.. I have a ton of fixed blades but I have always wanted a Fallkniven and this S1 seems like the best do it all blade for hiking and camping and I am going to take it deer hunting next season and see how it dresses..

I know it's an old video, but heartily agree that it makes a great choice for Knife, Medium, General Purpose, Mk1. As for the design genesis, you really should look back to the Randall 5-5 (5") and 5-6 (6"), the outdoors version of the Randall 1-5 and 1-6 classic fighter. Great thoughts on how useful the medium sized knife.

Thanks for the video. I have all three as well, A1, S1 and F1. I like them all and all have a place. I would like to see a S1 size knife with the F1 blade shape. I think that would be a very good knife. Take care Anthony

I totally agree that's it's a very good in between size knife. Also in weight it doesn't wear you down. Same category as the SRK indeed. I'm no fan of swedges but at least they don't have jimping. I don't agree that's an expert knife although the price is kinda. An expert can get along with almost any knife. It's the non- expert that needs the better knife to help developing skills. Also it's the weekend camper or day hiker that get killed in the bush because they are not prepared enough and really don't see the risks.

Survival situations are usually unexpected and spontaneous, so your edc knife is going to be the knife you are stuck with in a survival situation. So most of us are going to be using our pocket knives, my Civi definitely won't save me. So if we have a smaller more manageable fixed blade we are more likely to carry it and if trouble happens you might be a bit more prepared

Say Heah Cedric, Instead of going with a S-1 or the F-1. And since I already had the A-1 which I know is a great survival knife. I teamed it with a H-1. The reason is it remind's me of my Skookum Bush Tool which I have in 3V. man I'm really liking that steel. So I got the Cold Steel Master Hunter in 3V even though I have the Master Hunter in San Mai III. Yeah, It's a little thinner, But what a awesome slicer. So I teamed my S M III with my C. S. Kukuri Plus in O1 a lovely piece of kit together. And besides, my Master Hunter is similar to the Fallkniven's, Sure the Fallkniven are nicer. But heah, you can't kock a C. S. Master Hunter regardless if steel. Infact we're on our way to our spot traveling East with the storm's which catch up withbus when we stop to refresh. But yeah, I went Cold Steel for this trip, I should of gone stainless, But C. S. it is. I took my C. S. Rrcon Scout which I have in the CarbonV, Infact I have (2) one I use the other one is a safe qween. I teamed it with my Master Hunter in 3V. I don't know why, But I also brought my C. S. Double Bit Machete. I'm sure the rain will keep us in side. But I brought it. But I will use my Estwing Double Bit Hatchet and my Bonds Folding Saw that has a Eye Drop handle. Generic but I got lucky, it's a good tempered carbon blade, and so far is staying nice and sharp. Heh heh heh sorry for a dissertation heh heh heh, Yeah, I know how good your S-1 is, I likebmy A-1 alot more than my S. R. K in the San Mai III. good review , Thanx.,,.

If the S1 had the same blade profile as the A1, I'd agree with your premise, but knives without any belly aren't nearly as useful as those with it. Straight edges are nearly useless for anything other than stabbing or slashing, which aren't exactly common blade implementation.

@Xyrium
@Xyrium 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not buying this unless you have extraordinarily small hands. The S1 handle is by far, inadequate for the blade that it carries. If they put the A1 handle on the S! the S1 would be near perfect. I owned and returned the S1 Pro because I found the handle to be borderline dangerous.
@eachday9538
@eachday9538 7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree on the aesthetics of the S1 being just shy of the "tipping point". It is in the eye of the beholder of course, but for a knife of that decent size with some real fighting utility knife dna it is particularly understated. While it has a saber grind and clip point swedge stabbyness it doesn't go full bowie with blood groove and double hand guard like the classic usmc knife or really share any of the other "rambo" or modern tactical features and finishes that signal combative intent. It reminds me of the marl grey logoless t-shirt uniform that fills my cupboard. Love those slimline sheaths also, same as with the Mora sheaths and I agree on the size being just right for a "one knife". Notice I didn't say "one tool", that is where chopping, splitting and whatever would need to be better catered for. Is "scout knife" a term yet? Other than in the context of Boy Scouts and SAKs? Because this category of knife reminds me a little of the scout rifle concept, but also I suppose in that Boy Scout way in the balance of preparedness/wholesome respectability.
@eachday9538
@eachday9538 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, I wouldn't say just shy of the tipping point, I say it's on the tipping point, it could go either way, but with supporting context it can easily fall on the innocuous side of the crazy dangerous person alarm bells start ringing switch.
@eachday9538
@eachday9538 7 жыл бұрын
And to continue to overthink this, perhaps it is not actually a woodsy enough aesthetic to fit the Boy Scout idea as neatly as I was thinking, it is a bit too modern and sleek, needs just a bit more traditionalism or earthyness to hit that mark. Perhaps without changing materials, it would be doable with with traditional patterning/motifs moulded into the handle texture. Kind of like those celtic rope patterns or something, whatever the scandi equivalent is. Then no-one would suspect that you are a psycho knife murderer!
@CedricAda
@CedricAda 7 жыл бұрын
Everyday Adventure I love when these comments get deeper than the mariana trench. Yes, 'Scout Knife' has definitely been nabbed by the swiss army knife variants. This one is a touch more modern. Its the outdoor knife James Bond would use. A deep mahogany coloured thermorun handle with a leather lanyard strap could make it a little less bondy and a little more scouty. But in its current sleek black and silver package, it would go best in the survival kit under the ejector seat of an Aston DB9.

@@CedricAda she only hit the pommel of the knife with rocks, rather she broke sea shells on stone. But cutting through coconuts and processing woods from islands or from the isles of the Pacific. She used it as you'd have to in order to survive in an emergency situation. The blade chipped easily and the falkniven sheathes are crap. She used the cold steel srk on that trip in the video where she reviewed the S1. The cold steel srk held up to her using it for over 10 years and never had issues with it. I know it's controversial to bring low the heep big falkniven blades. But they come loose and the famous A1 pro is faulty as well. I saw a guy review it saying that it was a great awesome knife. After gaining wood the steel guard came loose and the hilt became shaky. I wouldn't buy a Falkniven now after all the testing and reviews I've seen where the famed A1 pro failed and had shotty craftsmanship. I prefer cold steel as they're tried and tested and trusted by the us military and military throughout the world.

@@MrJedi5150 ive seen so many reviews and tests with people juet batoning with these hep.Big great knives and they chip of the hilts get loose on the A1 pro or the S1 edge chips or roles easily just batoning through a hard piece of wood. True that they cut well through wood Bcz of the convex edge. But that edge is almost always unable to resharpen after heavy use in a survival situation. I don't care who uses this knife. It has been put through its paces by a lot of people using it as a survival knife doing everything it needs to in order to survive in a variety of testing. I don't care what people say about these knives all the evidence I've seen on people putting these knives just simply batoning and I don't trust it. My brother bought the a1 and as he and all of my brothers actually know a lot about survival abilities in our area of the USA. And he used it just going hiking and bush craft camping etc. in his testing of the A1 it chipped easily and the convex super steel edge was crap. I know it's a famous knife but testing doesn't lie. The proof is here on KZbin. Just look up "A1 pro testing" and you'll see what i mean. And my brother used the A1 and it was a piece of junk. He returned it to the falkniven company. I don't trust these knives as ive seen them fail and i know a lot about blades and different steels. I've many knives and can sharpen a knife so well by touching the edge my knives can cut you. The proof of these knives being crap is accessible online
