While these are videos entertaining and informative, I feel like their isn't enough appreciation given to your excellent "directing". Your establishing shots in a lot of these videos, like when you drive up on the location (something that would require you to drive up, set up the shot, then leave and then drive up again) feel very natural and really help the video feel more like a full story. However the shot that really got me to stop and write this is the one starting at 7:05. The "front" shot transitioning into the "back" shot was beautiful and flowed really well, as a viewer I really appreciate that "subtle" detail that lets us get up close versus you just using single camera position from start to finish.

I am not an expert but I think I’ve read that to minimize warpage and get a beam from a log you need to be 2 inches away from the pith to be free of the heart or either have the pith centered as you have done on your other beams. Your beams will have pith in each corner and may cup. An experienced sawmill operator may want to comment further. Enjoy your videos and admire your work ethic.
@lesabre19722 жыл бұрын
your not the only one I think that stick is pretty cool too.LOL
@leonardshultz43442 жыл бұрын
I think I would have taken the little correction strip off one of the sides to remove a bit of the wane.
@kenjett24342 жыл бұрын
Wes those were some nice beams out of that log but you have watch out for those dangerous Fallline dead falls. Perfect example why everything around a mill can be dangerous at least your still quick on your feet. Stay safe out there ok.

I found the entire process interesting......also interesting that you might max out overall size of certain cuts and slice some interesting project veneers within the those internal can'ts so to speak...
@e0204432 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you take that little 1/4" slice off the exposed side of the cant rather than off the best part of the log? It would have reduced the amount of bark showing on the end, at least a little bit, seems to me.
@hobsondrake2 жыл бұрын
was here to ask the same question. wouldn't it have been better to take a little off the two sides with the most wane than to do it the way you did?

Wes, I have seen you push a lot of slabs off that hit the tire. Is there a way to build a protective and reinforced slide so that the tire will not be hit? It just seems to me that repeated hits could do some damage to the tire, wheel or bearings. Have good days!
@falllineridge2 жыл бұрын
I don't really like it when it hits the tire either, but I haven't noticed it doing damage (at least not yet). I'm sure something could be built to protect it.

Wes... rule of thumb for cants... the largest cant you can cut from a log is .7 X Diameter of log at small end...
@tonygrimes132 жыл бұрын
Close enough, actual would be the Square Root of (small end Diameter x small end Diameter divided by 2) - I definitely learned something at school!!! lol
@Twangg12 жыл бұрын
@@tonygrimes13 simply the sin or the cos of the 45 deg angle times the Hypotenuse... hence .7071 X diameter of the log...since kerf is .125, the .071 s prtty inconsequentiali

Wes, what do you do with all the lumber that you mill and stack?
@falllineridge2 жыл бұрын
What I'm milling here is my friend Eric's half. The stuff I mill for myself I take home and use it for stuff around the house (pig shed, shed expansion project, house remodel, raised herb garden, etc.). Some of it I sell.
@stevt1002 жыл бұрын
Do you do anything to your boards to keep the bugs from getting into them?
@falllineridge2 жыл бұрын
As long as they get stacked and covered they last a very long time. These timbers are not mine, so someone else will have to cover them.

I can't understand why you took the shims out of the middle, instead of turning the cants and taking the wane from the other sides. You may have ended up with 6x6 with no wane,
