You're lucky that you can't remember what happened when John Denver had the hit with it, to begin with. A tremendously talented man, he was greatly disliked by many during his life; I think it was because radio stations overexposed his song, "Take Me Home, Country Roads." I never left the radio on for "background noise," and so I never got tired of songs that were over-played. So, I can still stand "Smoke On The Water" and Stairway to Heaven"- because I'm not sick of them. I love that I am judged by some music that I listen to because some other people - effin' LOTS of other people - were in the habit of having the radio on ALL THE TIME. I am still liable to get caught up by a cleverly written song with a catchy hook - we call these songs "earworms"- just as much as anyone else. It means that I can still enjoy those songs; but it also means that many pop songs sound the same to me. Is it OK to not like mass-produced crap? Sheeesh! OK, whatever...

I always liked the original. Love songs that display your pride in yourself or your hometown. And I agree, though the redone lyrics were pretty clever and humorous.
