It could be one of those cheesy rom-coms that end with them as closer friends after they realize that they worked better that way. Maybe once their relationship got out, they kept getting typecasted as a couple and it became more of a work relationship than an actual one. They get jaded by how the media wants them to do certain things and it blows up after the male lead gets "caught" with a different woman only for them to find out that he was mentoring this stand-up comedian lady.
