Fallout 3 is often referred to as a classic. In 2020, where does this game stand? I took some time to find that out.
THIS Is What Wastelanders NEEDS To Do To Fix Fallout 76: • THIS Is What Wasteland...

I first played Fallout 3 at E3 2008. I had never heard of the franchise and had never played Oblivion or Morrowind. I saw a big suit of power armor and thought I'd go see what that was. Went inside and they had a room all set up with Nuka Cola, Power Armor and a ton of other stuff (wish I could see it now). So, I sat down and they started with me exiting vault 101. Of course it crashed after my first step... But after they restarted it, I turned and asked what do I do Now? The guy said whatever you want. It was crazy to think I could go anywhere, do anything... so, I walked down to the school and got killed by raiders! But, I was very impressed and bought the game at launch.

That's a huge part of the amazing formula that makes es/fo games as great as they are. It's a relaxing feeling loading up the game knowing I can "do whatever I want." And I think it's also a confusing aspect of the game to many gamers. They just don't get it. They need to be steered in a direction or the game seems boring to them. To each their own.

That long life in the vault intro section was so well done. Once you got out of it I felt as if I really had lived my whole life there, and that the world outside was completely different. It really was. It was gritty, it had that post apocalyptic feel. Exploring the wasteland for hours on end, getting a ton of random encounters while doing quests just made the game feel special and so amazing. I loved how you could travel to different parts of the map and none of the encounters are the same, it was always funny seeing a settler from a certain settlement wandering on the other side of the map lol. And the metro tunnels added such a creepy feel as well. Along with the dark ambient music that went along with them. Amazing game. Endless things to explore. Forever living on in our memories.

Fallout 3 is the first game I would pick for a remastered edition, even though Bethesda has pretty much said it's never going to happen. I am currently playing F3 to get the trophies I left behind and I almost forgot how satisfying it is to interact with NPC's , that unique feel of vulnerability you get when leaving the vault and the dark humor. It's a shame Bethesda ruined what could have been the perfect franchise, if only the kept improving on what they built for F3 instead of chasing trends trying to fill their pockets.

Yeah, I like Fallout 4 in general (as a game) but not so much as an actual Fallout game. Both 4 and 76 seem like a fan fiction compared to the original Fallout in terms of the atmosphere and the world. I don't know why they are making these games so "cheerful". It's the main reason I like Fallout 3 the most among the "new" Fallouts. I don't care too much about gameplay and difficulty - I play these games for atmosphere and Fallout 3 still had some of that gritty, dark, depressing atmosphere of original games. I hope we see this trend come back one day. As you said, I also felt a bit afraid when I played FO3 for the first time. It was so... grim. And I loved it.

2008. I was years 11 old. My best friend let me borrow this game in trade for red faction guerrilla. From the moment I loaded this game up and began my journey I knew I found something special and something spectacular indeed. This game changed me. This game was and is everything to me. This universe is everything i wanted in a fantasy world. Here I am 12 years later 22 and I still play this game religiously and have that same bugged eyed excitement every playthrough. Not only did this game turn me into a Bethesda fan. It ruined me for any other RPGS as I would rather play this game again and again (as well as NV) than buy most any other new releases. (Except for the Outer worlds) Literally don't know if I'd be the same person if I hadn't played this game. This game fuled my imagination and creativity as well as understanding of advanced game mechanics and dialogue branches. Understanding scripting and random probability, if than statements and world variables. Understanding this game In full practicality gave my adolescent brain enlightenment.

Yk seeing this video, sort of reminds me of a simpler time, a time where it was easier to enjoy smth bc you knew less. A time where we could once say BGS was an amazing game developer. Granted, my stance on them and even Fallout 3 has changed very much so I say this opinion as a non-fan of the older game, but this only made them a one trick pony, never to be able to make a game or even publish a Fallout game that gives goodwill to the old and even newer fans, and yh granted, Fallout 4 was a best seller, but it was only bc of that F3/NV goodwill and the hype cycle of how they announced it. But yh, can suck to be a Fallout fan with Bethesda barely knowing how to repeat their "best" run in it while Obsidian just mailed it in one go, guess it was as you said Matty, there must've been some actual passion with this game, bc after that, I dunno if they had any once that money was coming in xD

Fallout 3 really rewards the adventurer- some of the most interesting people and places like the Republic of Dave, Temple of the Union, Little Lamplight, etc- are only found by an adventurous pursuance. Unlike Fallout: New Vegas where you are brought to every faction through the main story, Fallout 3 truly rewards those that take the time to explore the world and environment around them.

4:43 "They have not experienced Fallout 3, and this is something that SHOULD be experienced because . . ." No, more people should experience Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. Vastly more people. Those people who only know this series from Fallout 3 on have no idea what the bar is. Fallout 3 isn't a bad game in its own right; the art direction and presentation are superb. But it's a TERRIBLE Fallout game. And it's one title I have little desire to replay, much like Fallout 4. On the other hand, I've replayed Fallout 1 and 2 more than a dozen times each, and I fully intend to go through at least two more rounds with New Vegas. Fallout 3 feels empty and bloated at the same time. Empty because of the lack of an epilogue and few meaningful choices that impact the world or story in any way, and bloated because the game is designed to play like a huge skinner box, spamming you with bells, whistles, and other meaningless content to distract you from this fact. Fallout 4 leaves more or less the same impression, even if the ending is ultimately more about choosing a vision for the Commonwealth.

Playing through it right now, my biggest issues with the game is that most of the quests I find only have good karma endings so unless you want to be a murder hobo it's fairly hard to play a bad karma playthrough. Additionally because of the lack of interesting and specialized perks I can't really see a reason to not do the same, or a very similar, perk build on different playthroughs. Lastly, the game is extremely unstable and glitches out alot, especially on PC, so you're forced to quick save a lot in fear of losing progress. Other than these problems, Fallout 3 is a great game.
