The whole MacCready thing makes me wonder if he means actually eating food in there or eating food from there. My dad is a Vietnam War vet, who funnily enough, was a sniper. He was the type of guy who left the good MREs for the men under him to keep their moral up, while taking the ones no one wanted for himself. One of his more vivid memories is eating a MRE with "Ham" (basically cram) and lima beans next to a pile of rotting Vietnamese soldiers who'd been festering in the tropical heat for days. He was camping out a target and couldn't really move from where he was without risking his position... So yeah, that was his life for a few days.
