The hype train for Fallout 4 was off the rails. Is it because of the new audience, Bethesda's previous work with Fallout 3? Or was it because Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas made so many steps in the right direction?

In fallout 4 you have basebuilding but it has no impact on the story, it lacks depth because they just copied the mod which had the same exact features. In fallout new vegas you had a reputation system that would punish or help you based on your relation with diffrent factions. Thats an original feature for the 3d fallout series if you want an example. Now give me one thing thats new in fallout 4 that wasnt a mod made years prior.

@Kyle Vernon - Fallout 4 is more of a shooter than a rpg. In my opinion role playing, in a role playing game, is more important than anything else and Fallout 4 failed in that regards. So the fact that they improved all the things you listed doesn't matter to me because it's lacking in what I feel is the most important.You obviously like the game so I'm not saying this to disagree with you just to give my opinion.

Nah not really, Lanius was a disappointment in both how you fight him and how you talk him out of fighting. For one, Lanius was stated by Joshua to not be good at logistics and was more intelligent when it came to military affairs. He spent like years finding ways to conquer Hoover Dam and his plan for the 2nd battle was pretty sound. So then why the hell would he care about the Legion stretching out too thin? They should’ve made it so that you needed more than speech to convince him otherwise. Frank Horrigan was much better since he was loyal to the end and was challenging.

Here’s my conspiracy theory: Bethesda let Obsidian make a Fallout game so that they could prove that they (BGS) make a better Fallout game than the original creators of the entire franchise. So to prove that, they set them up for failure by only giving them a year and half, not even, to make a brand new Fallout game. Obsidian ended up proving that Fallout was better in their hands, disproving Bethesda’s point of “They may have created it, but we perfected it”. Here we are today and the franchise is pretty much dead and there’s no way of resurrecting it with Todd and Emil at the helm of the ship.

I doubt Bethesda really wanted to release a bad rushed game intentionally just to make their other games look good by comparison. What's more likely is that they wanted a second Fallout game to come out shortly after Fallout 3 in order to capitalize on the hype around the series at the time, and expected Obsidian able to make a shorter spinoff game with the assets of Fallout 3 within the short time frame, of which they did. Obsidian managed to make their game good because they clearly focused on a well paced story with multiple options that end at the same locations, all while keeping the story brief enough that they could include side content and complete the game in time. Keep in mind that Obsidian didn't really have to make many assets at all other than some NPC models and textures such as the Legion armor and Securitrons

That's the single most fallout New Vegas circle jerker theory I've heard in my life. No. They were given a year and a half so that Beth could quickly cash in in between development cycles. (F3, skyrim), plus Bethesda brought the 85 bonus and that would drive obsidian even more to do a good job, which they did not in bug testing because of an over ambition with the general scope of the game.

@@MAUTxxx IMO: The outer worlds is a good game, but nothing compared to new vegas. Do not expect all too many actual valuable choices you can make as a player, a feeling of progress, or interesting factions. It's a game that does a bunch of things very right, such as combat, a lack of bugs and glitches (I encountered one instance in which my game froze up, but after restarting it was fine and I never encountered a bug or glitch again.), voice acting, atmosphere and lore, etc... However, the game lacks in several departments when comparing it to new vegas. It's story is much more straightforward (not to mention quite short, maybe 60 hours of gameplay total.), it has maybe two genuine factions, both of which are equally retarded, player choice can be boiled down to two or three options every major questline (And I'm being very generous), enemy variety is bare-bones with enemies basically coming down to raiders, guards, troll-like creatures, big lizards and giant mantises. That's it. Weapon variety is also quite dismal, with a few basic weapons and their upgraded counterparts being the only real options. Gameplay loop comes down to either fighting or sneaking. Nothing new here I suppose, but solving things with dialogue is much less prevalent. Enemies re-spawn almost instantly, so a feeling of lasting effects on your surroundings is non-existent (this is an issue that obsidian had with some of the new vegas DLC as well, and It's my one great criticism of those parts of the game). Human enemies are faceless and always wear helmets. The gear they wear is cosmetic only and is non-lootable. The only possible loot is either scripted or random and doesn't actually represent what the enemy was using or wearing. Also, the "semi-open world" feels very linear and empty. All in all, considering that this is a stand-alone game of a company that hasn't developed in a long time, it's a good way to start a new franchise. The developers said themselves that they were mainly focused on giving a good story and new universe. But do not be mistaken: this game is a far cry from the glory that was Fallout New Vegas. And in a way, it's unfair to compare the two. One is an open world explorer rpg, the other is a semi-open world story-driven rpg. So I won't be glorifying The Outer Worlds any time soon, and you should really be careful with Obsidian's newly acquired hype. I'm glad they received a new chance, and I hope they can actually improve their games from here-on out, listening to the fans and actually making a game worthy of New Vegas' legacy. For now though, they've made something good, but not something special. Just my opinion, but it's an honest one.

That always bugged me so hard in their games. For example in Skyrim where the Blades treat you like a little shit and command you around, while you are the Dragonborn and THEY are the ones who depend on you. But still they treat you like a peasant. In Fallout 4 you don't really feel like the General of the Minutemen, since Preston always commands you around and sends you to help, instead YOU should be able to send HIM or other minutemen soldiers to the settlements. If Bethesda can't make you a proper leader then they should just leave it out, because it's too frustrating. They could have made it so, that you can command the NPC's to help the settlements, but you would risk a 5050 chance to either fail to help or be successful and it would depend on the moral of the soldiers and if they have enough food, water and equipment. Bethesda missed a lot of opportunities...

No. But after feedback from F1/2, they learned a majority of players like having something to loot in every chest. That's why they added Ammo/Caps to every desk and filing cabinet. It was a psychological game decision and it's not like New Vegas took ammo out of those things.

The only changes I liked in Fallout 4 was how power armor worked, how regular armor worked with different pieces instead of one whole suit, the weapon customization and gunplay, sprint, and the map exploration. Nothing else was an improvement. The gunplay was good, but to good because its like you are out of the vault with 100 gun skill accuracy

I just like the way they did the mechanics of it.they nailed that perfectly. In the early games it made you a beast until you fought with people who had it, and advanced weapons, which is how it should be.You also towered over fuckers :D They shouldn't have given you it so easily and early and it shouldn't have had those stupid fusion cores run out the way they did.They killed its protection and durability but they were definitely spot on with the mechanical aspects of it IMO.

@DJWeapon8
@DJWeapon8 4 жыл бұрын
If someone competent ever makes another Fallout game, they should retain F4's power armor mechanics. Just replace "fusion cores" with "military grade coolant" and make frames rarer. Good gunplay should also stay, but make players actually spend time and effort to spec into it instead of having really good aim, recoil control, and reload speed right off the bat. Easiest way to this is bringing back the Skills system and giving weapons skill requirements to use them proficiently once you reach it. However, you can still use the weapon even if you have a lower than required skill, its just that gunplay can range from: *Terribad [less than 25% met]* (no crosshairs, can't aim down sights, wide and frequent weapon sway, reloads very clumsily and very slowly, near uncontrollable recoil, unable to repair, unable to clear malfunctions) *Somewhat capable* [25%-50% met] (has wide crosshairs, can zoom in slightly, frequent weapon sway, reloads clumsily and slowly, high recoil, can repair up to 30% CND, clears malfunctions slowly) *Decent* [50%-75% met] (Slightly wider crosshairs, can aim down sights but has blurred peripherals, noticeable weapon sway, reloads slowly, slightly high recoil, can repair up to 70% CND, clears malfunctions somewhat slowly) all the way to what we have in F4's.

Fallout 4 was my first Fallout game, which I loved at the time. This led me to buy a copy of Fallout 3. I had no idea Fallout: New Vegas was a thing until stumbling across it. New Vegas was the last of the new generation Fallout I’ve played, and I have to say it’s the best. The atmosphere of the game feels unique, the story is interesting, the DLCs are amazing, and I feel like it plays a lot more into the history of the Fallout universe. Plus, no matter what level I play at in New Vegas feels like a challenge. I loved the leveling system because you pretty much had to plan which skills and traits you wanted from the moment you started the game. And the choices make you feel conflicted. And... I’ll stop rambling. Bottom line, I could praise New Vegas to the moon and back. While Fallout 4 caught my attention, New Vegas captured my heart.

Here's the thing, though: New Vegas didn't just improve on the formula for Fallout 3. It improved the formula for Fallout AS A WHOLE. The flaws of Fallout 3, like there being no joinable Enclave or cliche evil Super Mutants and railroading you to work with the Brotherhood? They were present in 1 and 2. Fallout 3 did nothing to alter the formula from the previous games, mostly because Bethesda was new to the franchise and was scared that if they changed anything, the fans would riot. They allowed Obsidian to make new changes in New Vegas because Fallout 3 was a wide success and people wanted something different in return. But it is annoying to me how people keep praising Fallout 1 and 2 while shitting on 3, whereas things like the Brotherhood railroading, always-evil Enclave, and chaotic evil super mutants were already there before 3. If anything, Fallout 3 at least offered you choices on how you dealt with the BoS and the Enclave. Heck, I RP'd my Lone Wanderer as someone who took Eden's message to heart even though she disagreed with his genocidal aims, so she eradicated the BoS while activating the purifier as intended. Then she helped groups like the people of Tenpenny Towers, Rivet City, Reily's Rangers, among others, to gain power over the wastelands, while she eradicated Super Mutants, Autumn's Enclave traitors, and Brotherhood remnants while wearing Enclave Power armor. That way, the Capital Wasteland becomes truly free, with no BoS bossing them around, which would allow society to develop faster using the remnants of Enclave tech. That's impossible in Fallout 2, where despite infiltrating the Enclave successfully, there's no option for you to help them win or take them over, like how KOTOR gave you the option to work with/infiltrate the Sith and become their ruler.

In Fallout 2, you essentially infiltrate the Enclave and could pass for an Enclave trooper, yet you couldn't join them or take them over. Which is stupid. At least in Fallout 3, the leader of the Enclave military knows your face and hates your guts, which is a good-enough excuse as to why you couldn't join them. KOTOR 1 showed us how a player could join the Sith Academy and even gain the loyalty of the Sith there, or even take over the Sith Empire. Why couldn't you do that in Fallout 2?

"remember when..." I do. We're talking about Fallout 1 and 2 here. The rest are shooters with some RPG mechanics, New Vegas being the closest to RPG genre. Actually, in my (unpopular) opinion, everything else that was done (namely, by bethesda) isn't even Fallout in the first place. Bethesda simply doesn't understand Fallout as a whole. F3 may or may not've been a good game, but it would've been better off with a different name and a fresh lore start. Of course, this way the game wouldn't receive such hype though. F3 owes F2 and 1 even more than F4 owes New Vegas. And don't get me started on later installments, with poorest 4button dialogue wheel in F4 and... ugh, i don't even want to mention F76 here, for very obvious reasons. Edit: didn't mention Fallout tactics, the game that is often overlooked. Well... it's better than F76 at least. Lacking in RPG, but had a good turn-based tactical combat, when F76 has neither.

@@romans4143 I agree, but I think F:NV qualifies as an RPG if only for the fact that many options are locked behind skill checks. I’ve said this same thing in the past. Fallout 4 owes its hype to New Vegas which in turn generated record breaking sales for Fallout 4. I just hope Bethesda realizes this. Fallout 5 won’t have the luxury of spring boarding off the success of the previous game. In Fallout 5s case it will come after the disastrous Fallout 76. That’s not exactly a good way to hype your game up. Most Fallout fans hate 76. Who knows when we will get another Single player Fallout game though. It could be another decade. Being a Fallout fan these days is pretty rough. All we can do is reminisce about the older games while watching Bethesda pour more gasoline on the 76 dumpster fire.

If Bethesda makes another game in general they will be met with skepticism of a heavy scale. We all have been looking at 76, as it is such a large dumpster fire, and forgot exactly what came before. I haven't heard anyone bring up that ravenous ES Mobile game as of recent, to the point where I have no clue what happened to it. I believe that this, and the degradation beyond Fallout 4 shows exactly how their next game will turn out.

The writing is horrendous and the factions feel kinda shit, so I decided to get a bunch of Enclave mods (main one being America rising) and an Alternate start mod so that I'm RPing as an Enclave remnant trying to rebuild the good ol US of A. It also has insanely great urban gloom and sensations of desolation that New Vegas doesn't. New Vegas is better with story and themes and I admit gameplay. But exploration, isolation, atmosphere the sense of loss and true meaning of the fallout of the apocalypse, Fallout 3 wins in leaps and bounds. Fallout 3 is like the abstract end whereas fallout 4 is the right action end, where New Vegas is the left of the middle. Fallout 3 let's you FEEL more like the sole living sane man traveling a wasted land. Fallout does have less going for it, but what little it does, it does better than the rest of the series. A true sense of horror, unlike the rest.

I started with 4 it was my entry point. New Vegas is the perfect Fallout game at least from a RP perspective. It’s perfectly open ended for your choices. The Courier is the only protagonist that doesn’t have an story that you‘re supposed to follow. The Lone Wanderer has to be fulfill what James started. The Sole Survivor has Shawn and the Institute. Even the Vault Dweller has to protect the Vault. The Courier is the only character that has the freedom to choose who they side with, even if they want more than to complete their job, or even if they want to finish it anyway. They have total control of their actions.

Love how auto captions replace Bethesda with "pathetic" at 0:54. Even the algorithms know. And yes, Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns as much as Fallout 4 is Skyrim with guns. Something they even tried to pull when Fallout 76 came out. When the first trailers were shown I could see re-skins of dragons, trolls, and other Skyrim mobs reused as assets for the game. I laughed out loud, thinking, "who in their right mind will fall for this sham?", welp, almost 2 years later it's very clear. Maybe I just have a good memory, maybe after 30 years of gaming I have learned to see the devil in the details, but whoever vehemently denies this and defends Bethesda for their actions with the Fallout IP needs an urgent reality check. So sad that fandoms have become the toxic cesspools they are today and not a forum open to discussion on how to improve the things we all enjoy and love. FO4 and FO76 are lazy and full of missteps (with a few excellent ideas sprinkled here and there, mind you, ultimately marred by an absolutely anal implementation). I just hope they don't cling to squeezing the last drop of life out of Fallout with 76, although at this point, with Fallout1st and the coming Season/Battle Pass or whatever, that hope is long dead.

The skill systems were thrown out and replaced with perks. They made it so points of interest would be highlighted on your radar. The combat was significantly improved at the cost of the story (while Oblivion didn't have an amazing story some sidequests and notably Shivering Isles were great). They even added in a sprint button.

I got into fallout having seen some videos of 1 and 2. NV was already out and people were looking to 4. I had no friends interested in any fallout games so I got to experience it without any real bias. I got my hands on 3 and NV at the same time and played 3. I beat it several times and then went to 1 and 2 before NV. Ultimately bear then all several times including 4 and 76. I've never been one to say "that game doesn't belong, or it ruined such and such." Each entry has something for me, like films in a series such as Terminator or predator or even alien I get enjoyment out of all of them, same for the fallout games. All sequel or subsequent games (films) do owe to the ones that came before it as without #1, #2 couldn't exist. I do enjoy the fallout community as some of the best people I've never met are there. I do hope the next entry of fallout takes the best ideas from the series and makes an amazing AAA game.

Why does it feel like I've watched this exact same video already like a hundred times? There is nothing particularly insightful about any of this.

I can objectively see how New Vegas has a better and more "Fallout" story. But something about the simplicity of Fallout 3's main questline just makes me feel good. Nothing too complicated and easy to remember where you are when coming back to it after side questing for ages.

My experience with the fallout series started a year before the trailer for fallout 4 came out, I was at a friends house and he had just gotten his ps4 up in his living room but for some reason we where in the basement when I saw the box for fallout 3 sitting on his old ps3 and I though the cover art looked cool. Then when fallout 4 came out I got it at Christmas and put what is now 5 days of gameplay into one character. After about a year of playing fallout 4 I bought fallout new Vegas off the $10 rack at Walmart and I’ve been in love with the series ever since.
