"What is it with supermutants and toys?" part of their theme seems to be innocence, like Strong not understanding the phase 'milk of human kindness' being the source of humanities strength, they often react to violence like it is a game, and the suiciders might mean they don't understand their own mortality.

it's really interesitng how every instance of inter-mutant conflict we've seen on the east coast(Fawkes and Strong) didnt involve killing but instead involved imprisonment, with the mutants keeping the traitor in a holding cell instead of just killing them. The Fallout 4 mutants are capable of easily killing each other if they act out of line by agreeing with humans or showing higher intelligence than the standard mutant. The Super Mutants led by Fist were planning on killing Strong and were making bets on how many times his body would bounce off the ground once they pushed him off Trinity Tower just because he took the readings of MacBeth too literally after agreeing with Rex. Erickson from Far Harbor used to be in a group led by Grun, a Behemoth leading the Vim! Pop Factory. He had to go into hiding because Grun almost squashed him to death after trying to give some intelligent suggestions to them.

One of Fawkes combat lines when fighting SMs is "You'll pay dearly for all you did to me!" so they were torturing him in other ways too. They weren't keeping him alive out of respect for their own.

You really made me realise how much of a missed opportunity the whole "Institute teleporting mutants" things was, having NPCs comment on how super mutant just randomly appear in a specific area would have really built up the mystique of the area. Plus it could have been a chance to delve into Super Mutant society and what they think was going on, do they believe it is the act of some Super Mutant god? If so it would explain why the boston super mutants have a superiority complex a bit. There's a lot of story tell potential there.

I love these kinds of videos. I think the reason the Super Mutants are so cordial with each other is because of some of the bits of culture Strong mentions. There is no infighting because Super Mutants share everything, they like it when they help each other for no ulterior motives, and are a lot more unified than the Raiders. About the northeast and southeast: a thing that both areas have in common is a larger gunner presence. The gunners having heavy fire power and a disposition for the high ground, making them a good counter to super mutants. What could be occurring is that in being the largest populations in those areas, super mutants realize they are too much of an effort to fight making them leave to less defended zones.

As far as the fate of the Commonwealth mutants. I think that as time goes on and their numbers dwindle I can see two things possibly happening. 1: The mutants consolidate their power and instead of many warlords and raiding parties they instead fall under one banner. They would likely hold up in a secure location. Which I think the Glowing Sea would be the perfect location. Yes it's FAR away from their normal raiding paths, but the natural protection that the highly irradiated and dangerous area means that any human faction looking to wipe them out will have a tough time doing so. 2: With their numbers dwindling the mutants could simply migrate to a new area, either in search of more mutant groups to join or find a way to make more mutants themselves. Or to simply find a easier target to raid. We already see this happening with the Far Harbor mutants who migrated there from Boston.

I think it's likely they would retreat close to the Glowing Sea, but not right into it (Due to problems with sourcing food, water, scrap, guns, armor, and ammunition), places like Natick, the Coast Guard Pier (longer shot, but it's close enough), or Somerville Place). Personally, I'd like to think they built a bunch of wood and scrap boats, similar to the ones used by the Orks in Lord of the Rings (Return of The King or The Two Towers, cant remember which), and then sailed to Spectacle Island to setup shop.

I've recently become a bit curious about Natick Bank's importance to the supermutants and deathclaws alike. I recently visited there and counted no fewer than 7 deathclaws in the area surrounding the town. directly east of there, right on the border of the map, there is a behemoth that spawns at a electrical transformer station that will start duking it out with nearby deathclaws. I've never found a deathclaw nest in the area to suggest it's a nesting ground like the Lynn Woods area, but despite it's low mutey population, the nearby behemoth might suggest that taking this area is a higher priority, than we might initially assume.

Regarding the Supermutant behemoths in the low-level-areas at 4:00 ~ish: My impression was that because of the Behemoths there where no other higher lvl enemies. Gameplaywise it hightens the contrast, (after slaying a few gouls and molerats suddenly you get jumped by a behemoths... ) and lorewise it could mean that they as an Apexpredator would simply not allow any other predators beside him.

Just to advise, on Survival mode, if you trigger the encounter between Diamond City Security and the Super Mutants at mid-level, the Super Mutants overpower Diamond City Security. I've witnessed it several times, once on at level 25, there was a legendary Super Mutant variant that decimated Diamond City Security. When that happens they effectively held the encampment and skirmished with Diamond City Security Guards everytime one did it's rounds. It certainly made Diamond City an interesting place to visit!

Really hope you're doing either gunners or triggermen in the next one, great concept for a series BTW! You kinda got me into Fallout 4 again. Also, it makes sense that Super mutants would have other goals than the ones in FO3 since they don't actually have acces to the FEV. They don't really strike me as raiders necessarily, more like Barbarians or Vikings, they care alot about strength, they look down on humans and want to kill and bask in the gore and violence, they have suicidebombers, they don't care about dying, that's the reason they don't stay in the glowing sea, they want to be close to people they can kill and don't care about the risks. Lastly i just wanna pitch an idea for a future fallout game, i would love it some day if we got a semi-intelligent behemoth boss of supermutants that has this giant throne and a couple of pet deathclaws, as well as cages of baby deathclaws, i think it could be a promising concept.

That’s what I’ve thought for awhile. That at least for the last few decades since the creation of the first Gen3, the people abducted to be replaced have been turned into Super Mutants and released. At least until Virgil destroyed the FEV lab. Before then, about 50-60 years ago, I know that the Institute was trying to use FEV for the “perfect machines/synths” project so they discarded the rejects from that. But my theory is that after the creation of the Gen3 Synth the FEV abductions continued partially to deal with the replacement captives, but partially to keep the Commonwealth weak and divided.

I think some vault 87 super mutants made it to the Commonwealth and integrated themselves with the Institute mutants. The main reason why I think this is because Strong will occasionally say "No green stuff here". If the Commonwealth mutants only gain new members from the institute,then why would they look for FEV? As far as they should know,the only way to get new mutants is to wait for the institute to create new ones. Then again,I don't know what the process is for them to be turned and released,so maybe they know what FEV is.

With CIT being the main point of insertion for operatives, it's possible that the Institute has chosen Boston as their designated place to discard super mutants instead of Cambridge. This would at least keep the Charles River between them, all with little extra energy used on teleportation. This could also help explain why super mutants are far more concentrated in Boston than Cambridge, where they technically originate.

About the mutants in the Vim! Pop factory: the terminal entries in the factory seem to suggest that Grun, the behemoth, led the group because of his strength. He was apparently losing cognitive abilities, becoming more and more aggressive and less and less intelligent as he grew in size and strength. This is consistent with what we know about behemoths. Super mutants who live long enough don't die from old age. They just keep growing bigger and dumber, seemingly infinitely or until they can no longer find enough food to support their massive bodies. If you look at a behemoth up close, you can see that it is deformed, seemingly by its muscle mass growing too fast for the bone structure to keep up. That seems like another likely cause of death for behemoths who don't get killed by an army of heavily armed assailants. I don't know if there is any certain information telling if _all_ super mutants are potential behemoths, or if only some of them will grow to that extreme.

Complete conjecture about the placement of the Super Mutants in the commonwealth: The Institute began disposing of Super Mutants by teleporting them several stories into the air at random places in the commonwealth. Randomness would avoid creating a pattern for the surface dwellers to notice. Due to the randomness of the teleportation, occasionally a Super Mutant would survive the process inside a high rise building. From these elevated positions, they set up raiding bases and began to scavenge the surrounding areas for food, weapons, and rope to make gorebags. The Institute became aware of the surviving Super Mutants, however they didn't stop because the Super Mutants destabilized the largest communities in the commonwealth, and actively reduced the raider population. This could also provide the reason that the Institute never stopped producing Super Mutants, even while Virgil notes that their experiments seem fruitless.

Malden's an interesting location. Super Mutants control the hospital, and raiders hold the metro, but are under attack by synths. Nearby, there's Vault 75, where the Gunners hold the Vault as a base, and nearby is a horde of Ghouls. I'd say in terms of fighting, Malden could very well be the biggest hotzone for gunfights, after downtown Boston.

I'm curious about the groups that found themselves in Far Harbor, they could give insight to potential numbers of mutants in areas outside the Commonwealth. It's possible that the biggest reason for the lack of mutants in the early game can also be attributed to the blocked railway north of Beantown, which restricted mutant flow. Lastly, it's perfectly plausible that the distribution of the mutants is simply down to being teleported aboveground to CIT to save power and then being driven out by the synths.

I think it would have been a really cool idea if they had a jacobstown like settlement in the glowing sea with a bunch of neutral super mutants oh you could befriend and visit or take missions to kill them. But a fortified supermutant Town out in the glowing sea would be kind of cool they picked that spot because they want to stay out of where humans come across them so they don't have problems. And they're willing to trade with people who show up peacefully

You know talks about the various conflicts makes me wonder if they could have implemented a "calendar" difficulty/game world change. for example after 60 in game days, with no player intervention (aka clearing a location) a super mutant group would have taken over a raider location, showing they are indeed expanding over time. maybe even unique bosses would only show up if the player allows a new group to take over, giving an interesting choice or even unintended reward

Great video. There were some points I did not consider like the glowing sea why they didn't make their mark there. The truth is that super mutants in FO4 are much more intelligent than in FO3. I always wonder how the super mutants on far harbour came to the island. That in itself is a sign on their intelligence, either knowledge of swimming or creating/using a boat. There were no way for the institute to actually send them there, the power needed for it must be insane.

Great video Radking, really hope you keep this series up for other types of enemies! I do wanted to point out a few things about the molecular relay: loading screens suggest that it was completed "nearly a hundred years ago", which would point towards sometime AFTER 2187. This can be problematic because not only the FEV project itself started on 2178, but in 2180 the Minutemen made one of their greatest achievements: they defended Diamond City from a large Super Mutant attack. In other words, it is suggested that before the molecular relay was actually functional, the Institute releasing Super Mutants in such large numbers that they became a threat to Diamond City, and all these mutants were... for the lack of a better term... manually released from the Institute directly. By the way, I have been wondering if there might have been an exodus of Capital Wasteland Super Mutants after the events of FO3, possibly after 2282: -In FO3 we find out that Vault 87 has finally ran out of FEV (the tanks are indicated to be fully depleted), which is why the Super Mutants are looking for the location of other vaults with the hope of finding more "green stuff". -This means that at the latest, by the time the Lone Wanderer enters Vault 87, the Super Mutants have lost the ability to increase their numbers, in other words, from that point forward their numbers can only diminish as they continue engaging threats like the BoS. -In 2282 Arthur Maxson killed Shepherd, a Super Mutant leader "who was attempting to re-organize the Capital Wasteland's Super Mutants", according to BoS records on the Prydwen. -My guess is that things must have gotten really bad between 2277-2282 and Shepherd made one last push to bring together the remaining mutants, but ultimately failed. -This could further suggest that the Super Mutant threat in the Capital Wasteland finally began dying down after this event, which would finally enable the BoS to build up their strength and in turn enable their expedition to the Commonwealth in 2287. Do you think some Super Mutants from the Capital Wasteland could have ended up in the Commonwealth afterwards?

A lot of people tend to generalize 'Bethesda Super Mutants' as just Orcs with guns, which could be argued is accurate in Fallout 3's Vault 87 Super Mutants, but seem to overlook just how (relatively) intelligent Institute Super Mutants are in comparison. Institute Super Mutants are capable of setting up moderately elaborate traps, are fiercely loyal to their chosen leadership, and have a good amount of technical knowledge given they can set up private-security-grade turrets and alarm systems. They're barbaric and almost universally hostile to humans, sure, but they have their own culture and societal structure that makes them a unique breed of Mutant in the wasteland.

Cool vid and though not a Adam follower, I enjoy the content! I think in FO3 there was mention of the extensive poliferation of super mutants (SM/SM's) in cities along the BOS's course to D.C., and I always found it curious. FO3 was my intro into the universe many years ago, so forgive my ignorance, but did FO1, 2, etc. explain their extensive range? It makes sense for rad mutants, ghouls, raiders and other human pops., but less so for a SM's since they require FEV to grow in numbers, unless more secret gov./military facilities were experimenting w/FEV pre-war. Either way the failed SM's from vault 87, Reaver ghouls, and those abominations from Zeta freak me out... 🤣
@jamessullivan1056
@jamessullivan1056 Жыл бұрын
This is the tack that Bethesda generally takes, introducing new localized FEV experiments carried out in regions where they want to have super mutants but the lore doesn’t previously support the existence of super mutants. This often leads to weird situations with the numbers- if someone is carrying out enough FEV experiments that the cities are still blanketed with mutants, that’s a huge deal. That’s a lot of people who’ve gotten grabbed and infected! The west coast games, by contrast, were generally more attentive to the evolution of the Super Mutants as a demographic. They’re the main threat in the first game, overwhelmingly powerful in the short term, overrunning and infecting entire towns, and IIRC the game shipped with a timer that had them wipe out more and more towns if you didn’t find a way to stop them fast enough. But the story made it very clear that their plan to create world peace by making everyone a mutant was doomed to failure in the long run because they couldn’t reproduce and would get picked off over time by accidents and mishaps even if they beat everyone else militarily. Finding a way to prove this to their leader is the quasi-pacifist way to beat the final boss. Several decades later in fallout 2, the remaining Mutants are the ones who made nice and reintegrated into society as a minority demographic. The ones we meet in Fallout New Vegas are at the tail end of a long decline, and a lot of individual super mutants character arcs in that game (like almost everyone’s character arc in that game) revolved around how they were either coping or failing to cope with their evolving situation and the sheer trauma of all the horrible stuff that happens to you when you live that long.

38:06 I think that this is because the Institute wants samples from the Super Mutants. They don't necessarily care if they all die, or continue to operate as a group. They just want some sanples to study. Also, Strong reveals a lot about Super Mutant culture in his dialouge. Both in his companion "admires you" talks, and his passing dialouge. From parts of it, it seems that Super Mutants are the only group that is actually communist, not the socialism of the Soviet Union or China. Looking into him would give you more insight into the culture of Super Mutants in the Commonwealth.
