Man, I was excited for this after watching your review, but after finally trying it tonight, this thing is a hot clunky mess. You can practically hear the gears grinding against each other as it devolves into a fiddley slog of pointlessness. This one is going straight to the sell pile without a second try. For open world adventure, Runebound (especially with co-op expansion) is pound for pound way better than this.

I've played the first scenario 5 times now. I will definitely play it a few more times. It's been unique and interesting each time... just a great experience. I love this game.

my only dislike with this game is that you can't all play Vault Dwellers. and I would have preferred a 5 player game. But hey i'm sure the first expansion will add the fifth player... a disturbingly regular "expansion option" which irks me no end especially when it was quite possible to add it in the main game.

There have been competitive games where the players can lose collectively to the game before: The star example from the old days is Avalon Hill's Republic of Rome, where the players can lose to the game if Rome is fighting two wars and then a third appears. They even had to "patch" the game with a rule published in their magazine "General", otherwise the game would defeat the players in average 60% of the time...

Seen a lot of criticism, but this review really makes this seem like a game for our group. Of course it would be nice to have a heavier ”Fallouthaven” -game, but this seems like a good start! And probably will hit the table more often than a more complicated game would.

Looking for a good solo game since Gloomhaven is sold out. I'm a big fan of Fallout (1 and 2 more than the newer ones) so I might give this a shot.

I have NOT played it solo but I imagine that it plays just as well in a solo environment.

Mr. Horseshoe It you haven't checked out Mage Knight yet I'd recommend looking into it. Many people say it's the best solo game and I tend to agree.

I would never want to solo Gloomhaven, that would be abysmal.

thanks for the very thorough review. I'm considering it as a Christmas present for my son with Autism who loves watching me play Fallout 3. We play D & D and basic board games. I'm assuming if it is too complicated, you can play this with loose rules and still have fun? thanks for any input.

How is downtime when you are not the active player? That is something I have had problems with in games like this, most of the game feels like me waiting for my turn. I am just not involved or impacted by what other players are doing.

can someone just confirm that to generate a reroll from a weapon your survivor MUST have a special on that weapon. heavy arguments and bad feelings beginning to sprout from this rule schism

Usually really like your overviews I wouldn't call it a review but they are going the way of infomercials I didn't get a sense of what issues this game has and if it's FFG it'll have a few mechanic issues and over-bloated or unnecessary rules. There was some comments about this, but felt like you are skirting around it.

We definitely didn't skirt anything. For a FFG game, this didn't feel bloated at all! It felt like it had exactly what it needed to convey the same feeling that the video game presents. The only issues that we had were mentioned thoroughly, the length of play and dice being used for conbat/test resolution (which is a pet peeve of mine since I do NOT like luck in games - however I felt that the dice in this game made sense since the V.A.T.S. system in the game uses probability but also has a chance of failure).

Like I've said in the past, they are explaining features. Like, "the game has this, this, and this, blah blah." This way, people can see if they would like the game very broadly without getting bogged down with all those annoying "game play details." It's a loose characterization, for those with a nice amount of disposable cash they want to burn. This is how the industry grows >:D

The game looks interesting and I LOVE Fallout, but the dice are really scaring me away from this game :(. I'm hoping that maybe FFG will release an expansion to expand on the combat to make it a bit more than just a dice chucker (like they did with Star Wars: Rebellion). I know you said items and S.P.E.C.I.A.L. can mitigate the dice rolls, but the dice still makes me a bit apprehensive about picking up the game.

WillUleimi I feel 180 degrees differently from you. I want an exploration/adventure game to have an element of the unknown and the unexpected. Cards which I know will definitely defeat an enemy when played is not to my liking. I enjoy chucking because it follows a statistically valid outcome but provides for some luck...good or bad from time to time.

While I found myself somewhat engaged by the "presence" of the theme all the whole way though, It really doesn't work as a game. It's completely random and unbalanced. Trying to achieve anything usually leads to setting up someone else to randomly achieve that goal before you. This is largely due to how the mission cards function. I love the idea of them, but I feel it would be SO much better if each player could begin their own quest/mission chains that only they can complete, and maybe keep the "main" scenario chain open for everyone. And the agenda deck, awful and boring design, there's only 7 cards that aren't "support faction A or B", so typically you're simply drawing X points, based on which faction is leading. I really want to like this game, there is SO much good stuff in it, really, but it was a massive disappointment to my whole group. This should have been a co-op, and it would have been a good one too.

Your reviews are really professional and informative but I really don't enjoy watching them. There is just a weird chemistry going on between you guys, it never appears like you are enjoying what you do, it really just feels like an office meeting or a sales pitch. It's propably just me feeling this way, but I am often put off by this

This game really missed the mark, it Falls Flat. All the things that make Fallout, Fallout, are missing. The story cards are so empty, the combat is pretty bad, and the game drags on and on and on. it's not a fun game. Much better options on the market that do a much better job.

Mr. Horseshoe I wouldn’t base your decision on this one comment. There are a lot of people that love the game and there are quite a few constructive critical reviews on BGG that discuss this game. I’d recommend checking those out.

I've always hated that dopey 50's cartoon aspect to fallout, and I'm so disappointed they decided to use it so heavily in this game. It really takes away from the post-apocalyptic theme.

Jaundiced Jape then you’re completely missing the point of fallout. it’s the tongue in cheek naïveté of the 50s meets the worst possible outcome of the cold war, the crisis of the time. art is subjective but get a grip man!

Well, sure, but that only needs to be there for juxtaposition. Does it really need to be used so often in the aesthetic design for this point to be evident? What makes the world of Fallout so enticing is the post-apocalyptic desperation, and for a board game I think it would have been more compelling to have that be the focus to a larger degree. It would also broaden the appeal to better entice those who aren't hardcore fans of the video games. I was on the fence about this game, and that choice is THE decisive factor in why I don't want this game in my collection; I just don't want to be looking at that dopey artwork while I'm trying to immerse myself in this world. It's a very minor point, but when you're 50/50 on a game, it only takes 1% to knock you over to one side. Of course I recognize that not everyone feels the same way.
