To make this game enjoyable, I had to scrounge up some fan-made rules that turned it into a fully cooperative game. Christ, even Bethesda's board games need mods to fix them.

That's a good suggestion. I paid a lot of money for this game and there's parts of the design that are just nonsensical, and it was my first foray into any tapletop gaming beyond monopoly. The fact that things stood out to me means I'm sure long-time gamers have massive gripes.

This game would be ideal to salvage....to help me cry a little less inside. Right away your review was bright and optimistic...and I felt what was about to come :(.... I felt this game was going to have a special place in my heart and on my shelf. Instead I’ve extracted that part of my heart, and is now stored away on my shelf collecting the dust that this game should have for several decades. BUT Wait! Do u think that it is broken enough that it can be mistaken as something resembling a sandbox game!?! That would give me hope for a community to come together to create something that deserves those “special” letters that we all covet. And with prices surely bound to drop harder than (insert witty comment here), maybe I’ll eventually pick up a few copies, and design something special from this wasteland of a game!

I doubt it. Fallout 2's bugs can be listed in half a piece of A4 paper. Fallout 4 on the other hand.. Oof.. I'm not buying that book. And it's almost twice as long if you buy F4 for PC. If you've got the wrong setup, you may have trouble even getting the game to start. For example, if you have a 120+HZ monitor, then you'll be forced to either set the system refresh rate to 60 or jump a hell of a lot of hoops to make the game functional.

I got given this as a gift and ironically the most fun I've had with it was as a single player game! The story deck is a really interesting and cool mechanic when you're the only person investigating it, and the luck factor isn't a huge deal when you aren't trying to race other players for VPs. It's like they did a decent job of porting the idea of the (Bethesda) CRPGs to a board game and then buggered it up by trying to add more players.

The production values on the game are so top-notch, it's a real shame to see that kind of attention to detail end up in a bad game design.
@markusschmidt9260
@markusschmidt9260 6 жыл бұрын
Simply put, the "production value" of this game is zero, because the game play is as bad and uninteresting as described by SU&SD, and a good game is a prerequisition for any "production value" of a board game. How about the "production value" of a speed boat covered in marble and gold, which does not float? I would argue Food Chain Magnate is the better game then Rising Sun or KD:M. But both games have a higher PV. But this, because they still are good games, I like to play. Only under these circumstance, component quality is to be considered into production value. But if you ask me, if FCM or Zombicide has the higher production value, I'd most certainly would go with FCM. These guys put so much thoughts and effort into creating an unique and interesting gaming experience, that it is high to value for itself. I think, you are calling out production value and component quality as synonyms, which they are not. Publishers need to integrate good gameplay into their production prozess, otherwise their doing is void. I occasionally read some people writing: "This game seems to be bad, but I'm backing it on KS just for the amazing minis. I can never understand, why they won't buy some GI Joe action figures instead, if that's all, what they are interesting in. They are actually cheaper and don't need to "float".

Played it at Essen last year, and I can only agree with you: I have no idea why this is a competetive game, considering how much the RNG is sometimes stacked against an individual player. I think I dropped from the demo after 40 minutes, because I got crit by a Deathclaw that took 15 out of my 16hp - which might as well just have killed me, considering how hard it is to regain even a single point of health in this game. But after 40 minutes I had already seen how this gameplay concept didn't work out, or at least wasn't for me.

I've seen a lot of up and down opinions on the board game, but overall, locally, the times I have brought this out to play or my friend has, as we both own this game, it has been overall enjoyed (and we both always have a blast playing it, as major Fallout fans.). There are choices you can make, it is not quite as one dimensional as you make it sound. There are often 2-3 questions available to go out, and those can branch out in a number of different directions. You can glimpse what other players are going for and make choices based on that. The dice are fine and I like the system that implements it. The game feels like a Fallout game to me and the spirit of it and the choices you make all work in that context. While I agree the competitive nature of the game is wonky, it's not enough to keep me from enjoying the game. I find the game plays best at 2-3 players. For me, I love Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas. Fallout 3 is just not very good and the main storyline sucks. 4 is good as a very different permutation of Fallout. I still appreciate it, though, in a different way. As a Fallout fan, I have enjoyed every playthrough of the board game. I'm also not someone who will bring the same game over and over again, as I constantly rotate them out, so when I do play this board game, it remains fresh to me.

Now I'm wondering, how _would_ one implement an RPG into a board game? How do you make it interesting and exciting without just making it a regular TTRPG with a DM running it? Because it feels like that _could_ be done well theoretically, even if it wasn't here.

I got this game for my buddy when it was on sale a few months ago. We played for about 3 hours before I got tired and realized we were supposed to be playing to win. Then I realized I'd already won which was fine with me as it was 4AM. It was really weird to me that a game that felt like a co-op game suddenly ended with me having won without having done any more than my friend. The implementation of the victory points is absolutely horrible. I think it's got potential though, if you just play it like Fallout. Play the game to have fun, ignore the points and the end game conditions and go exploring. The quests are really well implemented imo, as long as you ignore everything that happens after you finish them. I'll also admit to having no idea how the monster spawns were supposed to work. I read that part of the book several times and it just sounded like whenever a monster is killed you spawn a new one except maybe not sometimes?

Rewatching this and suddenly dawns on me: this was a thematic testing for that awful Fallout 76. I mean, I agree with Matt that Fallout under Bethesda hasn't been particularly good, but I played the games and enjoyed them more or less despite that. But I think I finally hit the breaking point. Fallout 3 was a neat (though narratively lacking, and with some lackluster interaction choices) diversion. New Vegas was a pretty great alternative (which I quite disliked at first because it had been so incredibly buggy before extensive patches) and the series should not have stayed in Bethesda's hands, because they keep screwing up their own original IP of the Elder Scrolls by doing to it exactly what they've done to Fallout: strip it of its soul and just make a buggy first-person action romp with ever-decreasing dialog/story interaction. And the best question here is: why is it competitive? Playing with friends as a group of interesting characters working together, perhaps each with their own personal quest, would have been the smarter and more interesting approach. But that's the sort of thing you'd expect a game designer to think of, and this was made by business people who dabble in making games simply as a means to make money.

This review NAILS IT. This is EXACTLY how we felt playing this game for the first time tonight. We were SOOOOO CONFUSED! With EVERYTHING! NOTHING made ANY sense! It was laughable. And it's really unfortunate because we really wanted to like this game. A lot. It looks AmAzInG. But like you said, in practice it's just horrifically awful. And the instructions and rulebooks are even WORSE. Like WAY worse. It also doesn't help that they like to reuse the same symbols for different situations throughout the entire game. Thank you for serving up even more confusion. And 90% of the "mechanics" aren't like ANY other board game mechanics you have ever seen. And after playing it, that's for a REASON. Long story short, after about FIVE HOURS with TWO of us, we finally got the gist of what was going on, and how the game was supposed to be played. And as soon as everything finally clicked, we were both like OOOHHHH KKKAAAAYYYY. I get it! So wait... That's it?? Huh. That's stupid. But apparently the cooperative expansion has a ridiculously high BGG rating, so fingers crossed on our next (and hopefully not LAST) journey through Fallout.

The fairly cheap expansion Atomic Bonds turns all the whole game and all its scenarios into a co-op "players versus the game" situation which clears up many of the problems. It also ditches the agenda cards for actually goals which are much less logic breaking and confusing. Fallout with Atomic Bonds is how the game should have been released.

Long comment but stay with me: I have followed development of the Fallout board game since it was first officially announced. Once I finally bought it, I was so overwhelmed by the amount of cards, chips, and manuals in the box that I didn't touch it for months. I tried again a while after, but only got as far as painting the miniatures before putting everything away again. Today was my third and final time sitting down, and trying to learn how to play the board game the way it was intended. After rewatching Geek & Sundry's video multiple times I finally thought to myself "why can't I just get the hang of this game"? Luckily I stumbled across your guys' channel and decided screw it. The game can be the foundation for the Fallout game I want, but I'm not gonna sit here and force myself to try and play it as it was intended. Thanks for making an in-depth and honest review of the game. @@TheMartinChronicles The expansion 'New California' is more of the same (albeit a nice chunk of new things) with 1 co-op mission (which feels a bit gimmicky). However, most of the items are mixed up with the base game so that's a relief. The 'Atomic Bonds' expansion is the big boi though! It makes every mission into a real co-op game with some new mechanics which are not too difficult to learn. For example instead of gaining (random, sometimes) influence, the agenda cards are tossed to the side and introduces new activation cards and creates co-op objectives - AND FAST TRAVELING (GODSEND). I liked the base game with a 6/10 - and this video is a bit too harsh in my opinion (although the randomness is spot-on though!!) My SO hated the game because of it. But now with the expansions (especially Atomic Bonds) I personally up the score to a 7,5/10. Even my SO enjoys it much more now. Yes the expansion Atomic Bonds is a must - but the New California is just extra fluff without Atomic Bonds. So go all in if you want a better game or try to look at some playtroughs with it. if you remove the focus of the agenda cards and try to get the most points first. it becomes a fun relaxed exploration game. i also agree this game is best played with 2. you can play a bit more co-op then. the whole quest system is awesome. although i find it a shame some side quests are present in every scenario. i also haven't by far not finished all the possibilities yet. i would still recommend this game, but mainly for fallout fans. there is something from every falloutgame in this. main or side quest, you will recognise something. arts is amazing and for the rest it all works. add some mood when reading out the quest cards and encounters rly helps to give the adventure some spunk.

Most of this video is mute after they released the atomic bonds upgrade in 2020 which makes it a co-op game now and has addressed pretty much all most peoples complaints about other dynamics

Yeah, if you want an immersive experience that is loads of fun despite a high degree of randomness, I recommend Arabian Nights. It's a delightful choose-your-own-adventure style game that can be enjoyed by newbies and veteran gamers alike.

Tbh both me and my friends enjoy this boardgame. Only negative for me is that shared quests too often have one easy option - player can spend 3 turns doing hard quest and suddenly other player does other, easy option.

The Atomic Bonds expansion is 100% necessary for this game, which makes it fully cooperative/solo - FF listened to what the community was doing with house rules and fixed most of the problems I feel. So much so that they should make a 2nd edition and just include the atomic bonds rules for free. That said, I still think you need to be a fallout fan to really enjoy it, and also a fan of solo/co-op games - if you are, it might even become your favorite co-op game.

They must have realised themselves how stupid the decision was not to make it purely cooperative. So in the first expansion they integrated some scenarios that were co-op. When people complained why they didn't rework the old scenarios and put them in this expansion, they brought out a mini-expansion that ... well... that you can call a patch. A patch that turns the game into what it was always meant to be. Wandering the wasteland together and having fun/exciting adventures. And now it's enjoyable.

Whenever I bring this game to the table, I always try to mention how it isnt about winning. I’ve found the Fallout board game to be more successful in the journey of playing rather than the destination of winning or losing. I feel that with the expansion, there are way more weapons and perks so you tend to feel more in control unlike what you were saying. So ya, just my thoughts on how this game fails at being a great competitive game, but succeeds at telling fun stories and having a fun rpg like experience. (Also, that sticky predicament of choosing quest choices based on rewards really shouldnt be happening if you dont think of the game as a competition, but rather as a fun rpg experience)

Thank you for the review, I feel like I needed someone to express what I was feeling before I could admit I wasn't terribly happy with this game. I love the Fallout universe and had high expectations out of this, but I never felt like I was unrealistic with my expectations. When we play it, it certainly does feel like we're going through the motions, without providing a tremendous amount of influence on the outcome. I am hoping they fix some of the gameplay issues with the expansion, but it sounds like the expansion is just more monsters/areas/scenarios... Which is unfortunate.

Excellent review. Surprised that you didn't reference Tales of the Arabian Nights. Just played it for the umpteenth time with a group that has until this point almost exclusively played Scythe. They quite enjoyed it (though it does drag on a bit). TotAN has, imho, the perfect embrace of randomness: the narrative is built solely on the moment to moment gut decisions you make, all of which you have little or no basis for assessing. But when Arabia is beating you down like a petulant beggar and rewarding your buddies like a love-stuck Efreet, you kind of feel like you deserve it. Maybe that's the difference.

'The thought of somebody who plays videogames, but doesn't play boardgames and this is the first game they ever try, it kinda breaks my heart'. Well, I'm that guy.. I bought Fallout earlier this week and I still have to play it for the first time, but this review saddens me.. I hope I'll still be able to get SOME fun out of it. I mainly bought it to play with my two sons, aged 8 and 10. I guess we'll have to see, won't we?..

The quests and text-filled cards were the main thing attracting me to the game so I'm glad you pointed out that they were a bright point but it also makes me disappointed to hear how they get swept away in all the randomness. I'm curious if the game would work as a co-op? Where players are not constantly stepping on each other.

I am SO glad this is an honest review of the game. Well done SU&SD. Too many reviewers simply explained the mechanics, leading many to buy into what is a fundamentally broken game. Bought this as a gift for my wife as she loves the IP, but ended up being a dud sadly.

It's honestly really jarring how this game mixes the art style and graphics of Fallout 4 with the setting of 3 but then also has some characters from 4? Like if you wanted me to be invested because it was a setting I was familiar with just stick to one.

I had this, played it solo, got the expansion, played it solo some more, and got rid of it last year. All I want is a good adventure game, one that doesn't require any extra tech and people at the store where I play would be willing to play; I have Outer Rim but my copy hasn't once hit the table outside of my solo plays.

I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but there are a couple points that I notice people forgetting which vastly improve the game: 1. Items, Agendas, etc. can be traded. You CAN help struggling players, you CAN wheel and deal with each other. It really adds to the experience. 2. As outlined in the rules, you can make future promises such as "I'll give you my next Agenda card if you trade me your gun." This is crucial to enjoying the game, and can bring about a little more of that roleplay feel to it. Promises like "I'll go get you a beer" are totally legal. 3. Take. Your. Time. This is a game you can power through, but it's best enjoyed in 2-4 hours sessions. Slow down, read the cards out loud. It makes the game way better. I'm not saying it's a great game, but I am saying a few minor rules are kinda key to a more enjoyable experience.
