I didn't really pay attention to it the first few times I played it, but when I last replayed Old World Blues, I actually listened to what Elijah had done there, and it made me want to play a game where *you* play as Elijah, because he has a whole adventure where he humiliates the Think Tank. He takes their experimental weapons, improves them, and destroys their security systems easily. When he needs an exit from the facility, he crashes an entire train to make one. Its the kind of thing you expect an RPG protagonist to do, and you can still see much of the damage he did to the facility. By comparison in Dead Money, he seems much less capable. Maybe it is meant to demonstrate that the obsession with the Sierra Madre has frayed his mind.
@alessandrodecarlo49133 ай бұрын
I always got the impression that he is not less capable but more like so hyper focused on the objective and wanting to remain alive that he started committing errors. Like at the start he is clearly competente and precise (He gives you the entire situation for each companion clearly) but then the Sierra activates the systems and the companions start to revolt. He's then forced to trust you and to remain behind, because he doesn't want to risk it and that is his big mistake since it's clear that we are at least as competent as him (we may have had help but still solved each task on our own). He was cocky and too hasty. Still I would love to play an Elijah character in a TTRPG. Maybe I'll make one for my BRPG campaign with friends.
@1TitanButtons3 ай бұрын
I believe Elijah is consistent, when you add in what happened at Helios. Hyper fixation on advanced technology with ignoring a more important task of taking the dam, which resulted in failure. Sierra is Helios repeating itself. The Think Tank, as smart as they are, are also incompetent. The entire group being constantly distracted by Dr. Mobius the whole time. The only reason Elijah left Big MT is because nothing their interested him as much as Helios or the Sierra Madre. That's the only reason he left.
@alessandrodecarlo49133 ай бұрын
@@1TitanButtons yep the think-tank is actually quite moronic in their own way. Like super smart kids. One of Dead Money’s weirdest choices is that you get a load of shotguns from traps, and its horror themed, but shells are *not* one of the things you can get from the vending machines. This is particularly weird because you get the unlock for ammo from the police station. It's not a deliberate attempt to limit the player's arsenal, since you're very explicitly given an autorifle that fires a full power rifle cartridge, one of the best energy weapons in the game, and some pretty good melee weapons. It just seems like an oversight. I’m aware of no mod fixes this cleanly instead of just making everything ever obtainable from the codes.
@JohnDoe-ks9ts3 ай бұрын
Might've just been added as an alternative to the holorifle for gun builds, since you can find a caravan shotgun on the way to the police station with a stash of 20ga shells; there are plenty more in Dean's stashes.

yeah that was an odd choice, even if you're lucky enough to get the Caravan Shotgun it doesn't scale that well against the Ghost People as the other weapons introduced in Dead Money DLC you only get good shotguns after dealing with God/Dog's quest then go for Christine's quest first instead of Dean's, at the end of her area you'll find the armory room with a guaranteed Hunting Shotgun on the shelf, or if you have enough Science skill you can hack a nearby terminal to access additional room that has a Lever-Action Shotgun inside

The story of Dead Money is great, but actually playing it is as annoying as playing Operation Anchorage from Fallout 3. Trapped in a small area, all your weapons and items stripped from you, unable to do anything but progress the story until you leave. It's so insanely buggy I had to play it like four times on release before I got through it, too. Also, something Warlockracy made into a joke, but that *really* annoyed me: the *only* way to cure Dog/God is...with Speechcraft. *100 fucking Speechcraft* at that. Nothing to do with Intelligence or Medicine or Science or anything like that. Healing schizophrenia in a goddamn super mutant can *only* be achieved with a real good pep talk. It's so fucking stupid. Edit: Another thing that makes Dead Money so obnoxious, that I don't think Warlockracy touched on, is that those stupid speakers that emit a frequency that explodes your bomb collar? Yeah if they have a blue light they can be shot, like he did in the video, but if they have a red light? They're completely invincible. Invulnerable to all damage, they can only be ran away from, and rarely shut off at a computer somewhere. It's just so damned annoying.

Nothing to do with Intelligence or Medicine or Science or anything like that. Healing schizophrenia in a goddamn super mutant can only be achieved with a real good pep talk. It's so fucking stupid. Honestly, this still works. Think about what exactly you're doing to God/Dog - you're literally talking his split personality away. It's insane. It shouldn't be possible. It's perfect for a 100 speechcraft check. Consider that the only other checks that high are: - Convincing Oliver to retreat. The man is so obsessed with the dam he will sacrifice any soldier under his command to take and hold it. Moreover, he's a manchild who got so mad at the rangers getting credit for the dam victory that he deliberately gets them killed. - Convincing Lanius to retreat. Considering what retreating did to the burned man, this is a pretty big ask. Not to mention, Lanius is hinging the entirety of the Legion on victory at the dam. He's less like a person and more like obsession itself in the shape of a 7 foot tall monster man. - Convincing Ulysses not to fight you. Ulysses, who essentially believes that you murdered everyone he ever loved or knew deliberately and never learned anything from it, Ulysses, who has spent the past decades setting up an elaborate revenge plan involving forcing your hand to nuke whatever you aligned yourself with. So 100 speech is not, like, normal talking, obviously. It's almost supernatural. The theoretical limit of human communication, to change the nature of an opponent through words alone. Makes sense that God/Dog isn't cured via anything else, because it shouldn't be possible - unless you can do just that.

The setting of Fallout is an ambiguous one, especially in the first game though the satirical elements turn progressively more to caricature as the games go on. You could make the argument, quite fairly, that the same literal interpretation of art that Avellone appears to show is shared by most of the npcs and characters in the broader setting. Surrounded as they are by flashy posters and now-ruined wonders of the distant past, they can only really theorise what sort of hyper-capitalist utopia/dystopia the pre-War USA had been. What few first-hand accounts they can draw on are biased, and even those are few and far between, trapped on ancient computer terminals or dusty holotapes of dubious integrity. The NCR want a stable state and appear to idealise the mundane luxury of pre-War America seemingly ignorant of how unsustainable those comforts were. The Legion, conversely, want to remove the last vestiges of what once was and wipe the slate clean, thinking themselves immune to the same authoritarian hubris that eventually broke Rome herself or perhaps even lacking the knowledge of it in what few historical texts Caesar was able to recover. House espouses the virtues of his great "Vision" even as children chase rats for food a stones throw from his precious Vegas Strip, while the Anarchist factions care only for the little slices of paradise they have carved for themselves out of the ruins of what once was and those outside these little communities are left to fend for themselves. I personally feel like the moral of Fallout is less of a one-note "Capitalism/Nationalism/War Bad" mentality and more along the lines of what will we be remembered for in the end? Our works of art, our academic achievements and technological marvels? Our flags, anthems, cultures and languages? Or the can of Store Value baked beans our distant ancestors will have to sustain themselves on when the only world our species has ever known becomes our tomb?

Were Tactics a bit less loose with canon, I'd imagine its iteration of the Brotherhood would probably be the most fondly remembered. Sure, they are a brutal military regime drafting tribals and townies and even mutants and running a protection racket backed by the biggest guns and power armor, but the dark-humourous aspects with them landed pretty much spot on. Instead they now sanctify their gear with censers taking pages less out of a certain currently heavily fought-over setting (where faith practically physically manifests and works) and more out of the Russian Orthodox church's treatment of space equipment, and have "squires" (who should be kids in training, with recruits being "initiates") lugging gear around for their "knights" (who are maintenance specialists, combat ones are "paladins") who wear fridge suits that you won't be able to get up in if you fall over. Kirkbride and Rolston leaving Bethesda was a blow they never quite recovered from, huh?

"Was Fallout a political statement on the evils of capitalism even though the authors didn't intend it to be?" I think the issue comes down to the term 'statement', as it implies an explicit declaration, which in turn implies intent. That's mostly semantic at best however, and the idea that the games *convey* these ideas unintentionally does indeed hold water. It's certainly not a core theme, but it does exist within the context of fallout as a part of the world you see in some places.
@antoniosugar70443 ай бұрын
The thing Is: does an ultrarich character being kind of a nice guy mean that the series is not also critical of capitalismo? A critique of capitalism can happens only if all rich characters are portrayed as cartoonishly evil assholes? Honestly I don't think so
@Nacalal3 ай бұрын
@@antoniosugar7044 That's a good point, altruistic yet wealthy individuals have existed throughout history, if anything it makes it a more realistic take on the whole subject. Making every rich person a generic mustache twirling monster would kinda dull the point of any critique in that it would be harder to apply to the world around us. Sometimes the best critique is simply presenting things as they are and letting people see the benefits and costs for themselves.
@thosebloodybadgers84993 ай бұрын
Additionally, a critique of capitalism is a critique of a system, not individuals participating in it particularly. As such, there can be altruistic rich people and asshole poor people, these are, ultimately, not as pertinent to the underlying criticism. If anything, doing a "critique of capitalism" primarily through the lens of individuals in power being stupid or evil will frequently detract from the supposed intent of criticism, hence why the Outer Worlds felt hollow to a lot of people. It's desire to be this "dark comedy" satire of corporations for the most part stops at the pointing and laughing at dumb rules made by stupid people who are comically incompetent and malicious. Which is not applicable to anything in particular. It's toothless.
@vincenzo0823 ай бұрын
The inherent problem is everyone who says "fallout is anti capitalism" will portray the entire game as that, rather than a theme. A good story has several, if not dozens of themes. It's only the modern slop that is churned out by committee that refuses to put more than one theme to a game. Rather than a game being a rich tapestry of blended threads, they are now single fiber stretched so taut they snap under any pressure.
@antoniosugar70443 ай бұрын
@@vincenzo082 honestly, even if it was ONLY anti-capitalist, generally I expect a story to handle that with a bit more nuance than "EVERY RICH PERSON IS COMICALLY EVIL DO YOU GET IT!?". His is a tragic story, and you're supposed to feel sorry for him, but that doesn't mean that the game is advocating for capitalism

Dead Money remains a really interesting experience, genuinely unlike the other DLCs for any modern Fallout. You can see where the gameplay wasn't quite up to the task, and it's very overwritten in places (it could've gotten away with a *lot* less handholding-by-radio) but there's a mood to it that I still really like. Picking through gloomy residential areas in the early game, the eerie silence of the holograms (and the effective use of Vera's voice later on), peeling back the mysteries of individual characters... little else in the franchise really does what it does, and you cover the strong points very well. Thanks for the video, looking forward to you exploring the rest! For real though, the big money is in that pre-war money. I love that the vendors still use it, and that's also how the casino pays out. Perfect little detail.

I'm on my way out and I HATE the idea of other people playing with my toys so I'm going to break them all." except in Obsidian's case big man Todd was like "lol no." and Fallout kept going whereas Kev Levine butchered Bioshock's continuity so hard that it's been over a decade between releases and there's no Bioshock game coming any time soon. My character, an unarmed simpleton that just wants to punch everyone's problems, saw no use for the shiny heavy things you could not eat and all the talky people who wouldn't shut up. So he just writes the whole experience off as an unfortunate waste, leaving behind the worthless gold. At least the scar lady is OK and the bad men can't hurt anyone any more.

Maybe the real E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy video was the Fallout New Vegas videos we saw along the way.

"Finding it, though, that's not the hard part. It's letting go" NAW The hardest part is trying to resist the temptation of sealing Elijah and straight up BOOT GANGing all the gold.
