The Maxsons aren't very good in making sure their family line continues by having one offspring in each generation. If Arthur wasn't victorious against the deathclaw and it ended up taking him out, the family line would have died.

Roger Maxson really reminds me of the emperor from WH40k in a way. Both were great leaders with ideals to lead their people to do the greater good for mankind, but somewhere down the line their inheritors really misinterpreted these ideals and have forgotten what they were fighting for in the first place.

It’s not unpopular since despite his genocidal nature tendencies towards synths, he is actually a great and noble leader. Also with the destruction of the Institute he probably mellowed out on synths by the time of the show.
