I like how almost all of the main evils in fallout are extensions or remnants of the old world US establishment like the enclave the brotherhood institute all the corporations etc. and distinctly basically never their enemies i.e. the Chinese or the USSR

Me too. Not only does it make sense (why would another nation invade a whole continent after the bombs fell?), it also provides valid critique of the 50s systemic issues (commie panic, rampant consumerism, a military industrial complex that got far to much influence,....).

I'm completely with you on it being a solid 8/10 show. Story and setting wise it's much more on the Bethesda level than Black Isle/Obsidian, but it succeeded spectacularly at the most important thing: Feeling like it slots in with the games rather than being a completely separate adaptation. Appreciated your analysis of the characters, although my reading of Maximus is that he's a child who was never allowed to grow out of the trauma of what happened at Shady Sands. I'm most interested to see how his character develops in future seasons.

Maximus is definitely a character with a lot of interesting narrative potential because there’s room for growth, but also just because he’s traumatised doesn’t mean he isn’t a worm at heart. I guess we’ll see.

Highly reccomend playing the first 2 games. They're by far the best in my opinion and you can literally play them on any potato laptop or even your phone. Fallout 3 is overrated as hell in my opinion and sent fallout in the "perpetual wasteland" world of Bethesda fallout.. And now because of the show the west coast as well

I think the reason Beth will never let us play a ghoul is because they very often use radiation as a progress blocker. Being immune to that breaks their planed flow. Sure there is items and armor to overcome it I don't think they want players to ever just be immune to it. Same reason we probably will never get to play a robot or super mutant. if they do ever give us player ghoulification it will probably be locked away to something mid game or later and not a starting or early game option. But I would love to be wrong and FO5 drop with full options for non-vault/non-human players.

Honestly, robots SHOULD suffer some effects from radiation. Not death. But degredation. As the rad levels creep up, your motive systems start to fail, slowing you down. Reducing your special stats, point by point. Maybe disabling, or temporarily jamming up weapons systems. On it's own, not deadly. But a high rad area like the glowing sea, full of radscorps and deathclaws... oh man, being SLOWED is a death sentence, let alone anything else. And worse... radaway can't remove radiation. Robots can't eat, or drink. So traveling in ANY irradiated zone is a time trial. Get your objective done and get out, before you become crippled and succumb to other threats. Ghouls and Super mutants, however... that is harder to balance. Then again. For ghouls. Add a mechanic for feralization A fairly long timer, longer than the robot degradation. Exposure to rads ticks up the clock, though for balance reasons it can be reverted... perhaps with a certain, rare, ghoul specific drug that was introduced in the show. Super mutants are perhaps the ONLY playable char that would be fully immune to radiation, but make it have drawbacks. NPC has information, but if you're a super mutant, convincing them to give you the information is harder. There are other ways to gate progress than radiation, after all.

Sad thing is that our world is just as broken as Fallout's. Obviously the corruption, greed, and violence of our world is where the inspiration was drawn so it would be, but we often look at the world of Fallout as being so much worse than ours when in reality (prewar wise at least) they're pretty similar. You brought up Fallout being kind of what the world would be if the 50s never ended and then said you'd do the late 90s/early 2000s, but if you think about it that's exactly what's happened. Since the 90s things have changed very little culturally. Really the only changes are technology advancing and people becoming more hostile, oddly just like in Fallout.

On the point of the base games don’t give the option of ghoulification there is a perk that sort of leans into that in fallout 4 but like a lot of ideas in that game they didn’t really run with it too much because it might rock the boat and upset players or something

Yeah I think that's certainly part of the reason why they've never taken that route. Especially given what a ghoul player character would require in terms of how they're interacted with. It'd be a recipe for upset players.

I think Cooper is the most interesting character. I am likly biased because I relate most to him personally. I dont hear it talked about, but Cooper is very Naive. He is the end of the storyline of naivety. He went to Anchorage in service to what he truly believed was the way. He comes home and has his little piece of the dream. He has a distinct moment where he realizes his view of the world is not the reality. Thats hard when you get the world pulled out from under you, especially when you have done a lot of killing in service to that cause. He then see's the destruction of that world only to live eternally to see the destruction of many other micro worlds. How many ideological recreations of the new way has he seen in over 200 years of the wasteland rise and fall the same way? Thats Fallout to me, thats war never changing. Cooper as the ghoul is the end of the road of your ideologies. I have fought all over the world and seen all sorts of people fighting for the cause, the belief, the preservation, or the revolution. The left, the right, the center, and the fringe. At the bitter end the vast majority of the people fighting end in a nihilistic place where their world got pulled out from under them. Thats Cooper. I am not a leftist. I dont even know why I saw your video. I just like good conversation and I have a different perspective that doesnt get talked about much. We always end in the same place, its almost a preset tripwire in humanity. We lose sight of it and wind up setting up for it again, much like the worlds current state.

They will probably write it so that any NV ending besides the Legion could have happened. For example: The NCR annexes NV but after getting their capital nuked they completely pull out of the Mojave leaving it to tear itself apart in complete anarchy once all law and order is gone, turning it into a desolate wasteland picked apart by raiders and scavengers. Mr House/Yes Man take over NV, the NCR mount a huge counterattack causing NV to be largely destroyed due to it being a warzone. Whoever wins, the NCR gets nuked and pulls out and NV is left so destroyed and depleted it is no longer able to defend itself or maintain law abd order and so becomes a lawless wasteland picked apart by raiders and scavengers. The supposedly inevitable invasion of the tunnelers and potentially the storms from the divide could also contribute to these outcomes. I would recommend playing the NV mod called Dust, as it may well be canon now, and it depicts a lot of what I proposed for the House/YM endings.

I think you misunderstand Maximilian. He's the inherent sadness of the last vestiges of hope. The only way he's actually a worm is that he's searching for a way to keep that tiny hope functional. In a way he's sort of a Greek chorus of one. He says he wants to get back at whoever ruined his world, but he has no idea how that can happen . He's in love with the acolyte girl who ruins her foot rather than go out into the world, But only enough to engender the rage born of her impending departure. He has hope in Knight Titus, which he then has to morph into hope for his own survival when Titus turns out to be the ultimate disappointment. Maximilian is a barely flickering flame struggling for the circumstantial air to keep himself from going dark. At each moment he's looking for any just cause that will let him take the next step rather than fall into the lastitudes of despair. Key to this is in fact what he says of others, he's a case of someone who's trying to fix the world but cannot find any one to agree with him on how. And finally he is not innocent per se but unsophisticated because nothing has given him the chance for sophistication. He's Been taught to believe orgasm is a flaw, but he knows enough to know that he hasn't. We are left to assume, from his phrasing, that he has masturbated to self-denial rather than completion. A goal installed into him rather than instilled in him. That's part of why that one cringe scene is so cringe. There's Lucy, who's been doing "cousin stuff", who has technically been married and widowed. Who has sexually advanced mores built on various layers of necessary free love I guess. And there's Maximilian who has been raised to be a drone. And yet the dronishness has not totally taken root within him because of that last flickering of Hope. He is not a callow worm, he's an emotional survivor in an emotional hellscape, but just barely. He's a sneak thief of Hope more than a worm. His camp buddy first Love was a template, but he is instantly taken by Lucy because she has the dynamism that he has been forced to swallow and suppress for his entire life. Even his very first salute as a child, stepping out of Indiana Jones's fridge, he knows to salute the military, to fit in, to confirm, even though he's probably never seen someone in power armor before that very moment. The gunslinger never risks emotionally really, he is the dude remnant of the past being forced into paradigm against his will. And Lucy risks without knowing it. But Maximilian risks knowing exactly what he has to lose, which is a completely different kind of bravery. The thing is that all of his hope is remembered from a childhood and so seems childish despite his knowledge as A young adult that he is in fact hiding in plain sight.

During my first time in Fallout 3 I blew up Megaton and was blown away the game actually let you do that. I was only curious where the mission was going and kept thinking “no way the game will let this happen, something’s gonna stop me at the last minute.” And then when I finally pushed the plunger and saw the boom, along with the “You lost karma” message, I turned off the game and never touched it again until New Vegas. Couldn’t live with myself.

I like Maximus. I found his character to be the most relatable. He has the skills to survive in the wasteland, yet he still has this idealism about him. I think we’d like to think that we’d be more honorable or badass like the Cooper/Ghoul, or Lucy, but I think most of us would probably be more like Maximus…and that’s why most people don’t like him…because deep down that’s who we’d most likely be like. But I liked all the main protagonists.

The point about playable ghouls is a real missed opertunity with fallout76 the cloest you get in that game is mutations that only add gameplay effects never change your character model physically, and the only thing you ever get out of the npc as a reaction is the bos will occaitonally comment demandingly to get your mutation cured, but the actual faction heads never comment or even enforce it. I think modus has a comment if you managed to gain a natural mutation before the enclave segement of the msq, but your finally so detached to the concrete backstory with the ability to become ghoulified, or mutated, in some manner but it never happens on a physical level like with skyrims werewolf/vampire system which elder scrolls online not only has, but has numerous times npc will comment on it, even some will refuse to speak or even react hostile to you if you use the abilities that are labeled crimes. Alot of my friends say 76 isnt/shouldnt be a mmo but at this point until the next but expansion releases its just been a skinnerbox with daily chores whci ultimately feels like an mmo, without alot of the ways players communicate normally forcing users to use voicechat with no text like its some gmod larp style rp server. I really hope fallout 5 allows us to become a ghoul, or other form of mutant, physically change, and gain new abilities based on said change.

I’d be curious to know if anyone would agree with this theory of mine regarding the ultimate outcome of the TV series and how it may effect future video game installments: I strongly believe that Lucy and the Ghoul will pursue Hank across the country to the East Coast, passing by or through locations from previous games, giving us an indication of what potential player choices are ‘canon’. It will likely be a blend of outcomes, but the goal is to make a new foundation for future games to build on without having to account for the ambiguity of previous outcomes based on player choice. This applies to the Brotherhood, as well, with Maximus’ chapter splintering off under Quintus’ leadership, and will demonstrate the flaws in Brotherhood ideology compared to Maximus’ idealism of what it means to be a Knight. I suspect that he will eventually overthrow Quintus and institute his own version of what the BoS should be, and follow Lucy eastward, inadvertently rallying other chapters to his side.

I did not like the show as much as you, because to me it felt like watching a Star Wars tv show... Too many same scenes, everybody goes the same direction, it does kinda feel like fallout characters now that you pointed that out, but still felt very Fallout 4. Every armor has the same animation... And it's that weird I took a shit in my pants kind of walk that came from Fallout 4... Really this could have been better, like Fallout 4 and 76 (thankfully I got 76 at that time when it sold for $2 on G2A 🤑)

So, millennial, black,female, none gamer here. I loved this show, Ive watched it twice through, and I’ve consumed hours of YT videos on the lore of the game. I was hoping your video would give insight, I was disappointed. The video used a lot of words to project biases onto the show without actually saying anything. This is an anti-cap video cosplaying as an in-depth review of the lore. Geopolitics are a huge part of the lore, but it’s not the main point of the lore. At least based on what all the videos seem to point to. Plus a person involved with the early games said the story wasn’t supposed to be so anti, rather this is how that world just was. Obviously politics is important, WW3 happened, but that’s the background. The truth of the games is that humanity , whatever your political ideology, will always be at war because people don’t listen. They need to be in charge and prove they’re right in how they want to save the world. This video mimics needing to have that same viewpoint, listen to me not them, without saying anything enlightening, or inherently true. And your simplistic view of the characters is what’s cringe. Hubris without depth, real human insight, or a knowledge of life beyond your echo chamber is all this video is. An example of what you seem to get wrong: The only communists portrayed in the show were the Chinese and they dropped the bombs first. What communist values do any other characters show? Cooper Howard was shown not to be a communist in both timelines. He didn’t trust his wife because of their conversation about no dogs in the vault and things she’d let slip out. His “changes” postwar aren’t changes. His need to find and protect his family, his need for answers, his empathy, etc are displayed in both timelines. How he models these traits looks different only because the setting has changed. Also, M said she wasn’t a communist. She was a business (wealthy )woman who wanted to give out a resource to stop a war. Under cap. She had that right. The corrupt corporations were greedy and evil, but so was China. They bombed the US because they were about to lose, according to hints in the lore. No one hated on Lucy because she’s written well. A lot of us are tired of women being written as Mary Sue characters who act like men. People hate on bad characters, period. You hated on Maximus , and he gets the most hate, so are his detractors racist? Or are they having issues with how he’s written? The answer is obvious. How’s he’s written, but we minorities could easily says it’s because he’s black. That’s how progressives defend badly written female characters, with the most stupid, simplistic words. Also, the entire world was nuked, so two centuries later are survivors of communist countries doing better? We can’t say because there’s not enough info. All we have is info from one place, a fake prewar America where everyone was corrupted. Trying to twist this into cap. bad and other economic ideologies good.

Surveillance and gait recognition, social credit scores, public shaming screens, wanton raids, the execution vans, and their intranet that is bursting at the seams trying to hide it all and scrub the leaks tell you all you need to know about the leadership. They will gladly throw hundreds of thousands of trained villagers into a shredder. During Korea, Americans were disturbed from how easy it was to kill them because of how little regard for their own lives the Chinese had. Americans would just line them up and kill multiple per shot, and it was so easy and inconsequential that it traumatized our guys. When China is in war mode they go full hivemind. Only the desires of the party matter.

Fallout 2's protagonist was not s vault dweller either. Obsidian just followed what they originally planned for the franchise, and that is for there to be a wide variety of "backgrounds" for the player character.

To be fair, isn't he pretty much Titus, but younger? - with a potential to change. He has impulses to be a better person, but ultimately when he isn't - he's still benefitting, more so even when he's not trying to be a better person. He literally wears armor that he doesn't deserve... As of yet. He might, but at the time he's a knight, not *the* knight. Kind of the *idea* of the character, no? Deeply flawed, but potential for growth. With painful costs to pay for choosing to be better.

The show writing really fails to address race overall and most of the characters that are black really feel like they were casted or written race neutral which creates some very weird racial dynamics like all the strong black and brown women being in sinister power positions. The tone of the show overall appears to attempt to portay a post racial America, which will inevitably fail to address racial issues raised by the characters casted to black or brown actors.

@@bigpimpmoneyjuice I mean, show fucked up 98% of everything else. You're surprised they failed to spin anything about race, or in-lore conflicts between groups of people, like that between wastelanders and ghouls or wastelanders and vault dwellers, or everybody and supermutants remaining after Master perished and they've been left seen as monsters but now free to make their own lives in a hostile borderline between wastes and civilization both of which are deadly for the- No, really. Show's a failure the more I look at it, writers are incompetent in pretty much everything, be it in-lore themes or contemporary IRL topics.
