Lake Catherine State park is near Hot Springs, and has a host of trails along with all the other usual state park things to do. And a playground, that was the must do for Beau after his hiking adventure today.
It’s not often we venture into state parks. We’d been here before earlier in the year, so to see the water still flowing as well as it was at the falls surprised me. The Falls Branch Trail is one part of a mini-network of trails that weaves around this part of Lake Catherine, and is rated as moderate by All Trails. We were on day care duty today, and so this seemed like a great place for Super Leeds to take my 2 year old grandson, Beau, on an adventure. Aunty Ashley did the hard work here really, everyone else just played!
Getting to the parking spot is pretty easy, google maps will take your right to it. Cell phone signal though stops a few miles out in all directions from this spot, just keep that in mind, although I did get random cell signal at times.
Even though rated as moderate, this hike is pretty easy overall. Expect to have some small steep steps or rocks or tree roots to climb on or around at points along the way, The falls are a third of the way around this looped trail if you go clockwise. There are several small falls and cascades up stream along Falls Creek too. There are plenty of smaller drainage creeks that mostly have bridges over them to cross along the way.

Leeds is always kept on a leash until we find water he can play in. If he sees or senses deer he'll chase. Water trumps everything for him though. This respects the "Leave no Trace" principles, please do likewise. We adventure often, and he is very well trained now (and patient with me) with regard to climbs and scrambles. Know the limits of your dog, and your ability to handle it if you elect to take it.
