Great video thank you for that information. A good book I have been reading is "how to win every argument the use and abuse of logic". This book is filled with so many fallacies and its amazing to combat ideas that use these fallacies. 10/10 would recommend.

Thanks, for recommendation. Does this book show you how to argue in a non-fallacious snd blunt way. Im sick of fallacies and people beeting around the bush. Id love to put everyone down who abundantly uses these cheaky ways of arguing. Tired of it

One of the worst (and my personal favorite) is when feminists state that you're "either a feminist or sexist", or some such nonsense. Gloria Allred has stated, "I often say if you're not a feminist then you're a bigot. I mean, there is nothing in between. It's like being pregnant: you either are pregnant or you're not. What else is there? There is no in between." It's utter garbage.
@CarneadesOfCyrene8 жыл бұрын
+Shane Simmons Surely a false dichotomy, especially since there are a number of different waves of feminism. One might make have a case for that argument for first wave feminism, but for second and third, it seems completely indefensible.

What is the fallacy called when it is assumed that there is only one option, but there are actually two?
@Kiltoonie6 жыл бұрын
It is called fascism. Or Communism. But they do say that all arguments are circular, and the further you go to the left the more likely momentum is carrying you towards the right. Note that I used the lower case there for the word 'momentum'. That was considered.

Yep. It is a common fallacy that you will run into.

So here is my question if there were only 2 options in the thought experiment. Then would they not be a fallacy ? If that is true. Now if there actually was a 3rd option or more then 3. But you limit that option to just 2 then! It would be a fallacy. Example there is a road that goes straight and you can only go foward or backwards to stay on the road. Thats not a false dilemma
@reynard2ki8 жыл бұрын
Messianic Creationists often commit this fallacy when attacking evolution (among other fallacies, of course). They attack evolution with the conclusion that if I discredit evolution, then my version of creation has to be true, when there are many, many more possibilities that they're ignoring. Interestingly, I don't see them trying to discredit Odin and ancient Norse religion.

Does anyone else see the whole Blue vs Red Pill movement as still part of a dichotomy with someone else controlling the outcome and opt for #NoPILL? #
@karenumland10913 жыл бұрын
Yes, the problem with Red Pill vs able Pill is that it assumes the Red Pill perspective is true, and in the manner it is used (co-opted) today it is quite false.

A classic false dilemma comes from Plato's, "Euthyphro dilemma”. ... If morally good acts are willed by God because they are morally good, or because the gods command them. One should always ask, "Are there more options than what has been presented." "Those who don’t support government welfare programs obviously don’t care about the poor." Classical Libertarians (think Tea Party) don't care about the poor! This type of statement has been de rigueur in media, the Hollywood elite, and the left since the mid-1970s. From the Jerry Falwell camp we get a false dilemma that either we maintain the historical moral standard (majority) or we eliminate moral standards altogether. Likewise the Ad Counsel runs the, "Love has no ...." ad campaign that actually seems to flip Falwell's false dilemma into another one. Namely either you define all these behaviors as loving or you are a hater. It certainly dovetails with the first example above. Another great video. Thx

+Uber “Genius” Genie Interesting claims. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I agree with your second and third examples, and I definitely think the first one is up for debate (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn6ydWqlm6lsec0 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4eQeKN7mNtoa5Y). It seems to me from my understanding, that the fourth argument does not take the form of a dilemma. If I am remembering the advertisement correctly, it seems to be something much more along the lines 1) If we look at families and love in terms of skeletons only, it all looks the same. 2) To judge things objectively, we should look at them with the lens of our personal biases stripped away. 3) Looking at people as skeletons only allows us to remove our own personal bias. C) Therefore with if we judge objectively, different kinds of families and love look the same. You may feel free to object to this argument, and I would agree that it may have problems. But it does not seem to me that this is a false dilemma. But perhaps there is some part of the argument that I have forgotten.

@CarneadesOfCyrene3 жыл бұрын
I hope you are not talking about this video, the example with fluoride is about a fake toothpaste called "Along Flo-the-ride". The reason it is a fallacious argument has nothing to do with fluoride, and everything to do with the fact that there are plenty of other toothpastes.

Why is it a fallacy?
@ak47bruins3 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty self explanatory. You’re presenting a dichotomy when in fact there are more than two possibilities
