I would have liked to show the poisonous look-alike in the video, but I haven't found any in my area. Here's a good short video showing Indian hellebore - Veratrum viride. kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXQpoaKgbGmpKs

I remember as a kid taking the berries from this plant and squeezing them between my index and thumb to make the pit shoot out, they go flying. Wish I was more into foraging and wild edibles back then. Great video!

Great advice about watching it grow for a year to make sure you know the plant! Thanks for the video!

Thanks I love solomons seal. Very tasty and gives me energy. Its growing all over the place in our area, on rocky hillsides facing the sun especially.

I live on east coast, Maine, northern Maine to be exact, we have both types of this plant (false Soloman Seal and Soloman Seal)

Cool! I've never seen Solomon's seal in person. Thanks!

Both are present here in southern Appalachia too. I've planted some of each in my shade garden.

I hadn't heard of a poisonous look alike. What are the key identifying features of the look alike?
@OkanaganGardenerandForager Жыл бұрын
Here's a good video showing the poisonous look-alike. I would have liked to put them both in the video, but I haven't found the poisonous look-alike in my area. The flowers on the hellebore plant look very different, and there are hairs on the undersides of the leaves and stems of the hellebore plants. I hope that helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXQpoaKgbGmpKs

@@OkanaganGardenerandForager Thanks man. Yeah, apart from the overall appearance from the leaves and a single stalk, the Hellebore doesn't really look like either Solomons seal or false ss. But I guess I could see that a newbie could mistake the two. The more you study plants, trees, mushrooms, etc the more pronounced the differences appear. I never really considered that aspect until just now, but before I began to learn and at the beginning, so many plants looked similar that now are like night and day
@OkanaganGardenerandForager Жыл бұрын
@ScottWConvid19 I agree! For me, they don't really look that similar. I think when they're first starting growing in the spring, it's harder to tell. Later in the season, I think it would be pretty tough to mix them up.

Are you over in Ottawa ? I'm over here in Michigan and I'm trying to find some other forager within the similar region to me

Is variegated Solomon's seal the same? The one with white on the leaves!
@OkanaganGardenerandForager Жыл бұрын
No, I don't think that's the same, but I think they look fairly similar.

I only find it when it's very few plants. Enough to make tincture w leaves but hate to pull up root amd leave none behind
@OkanaganGardenerandForager Жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm looking for a big patch that I can hopefully take some roots, but just like you said I don't want to leave none behind. Thank you!

The false Solomon's seal that I am familiar with in the Eastern Sierras has very dark berries, almost black.
