Kinda helps that most of the Gen 4 evolutions were pokemon that desperately needed BST boosts far more than Rhydon (e.g. Magneton, Lickitung, Tangela, ALL of the Gen 2 pokemon that got evolutions, Roselia, Nosepass), so Rhyperior didn't stand out nearly as much as a consequence.

To give some more history about Gen 9 Rhyperior: As mentioned, it was one of the best mons around when it was in NU, even in a meta dominated by Slowbro, Flygon, and many different Fighting types (Mienshao, Lucario, Gallade, etc). Its innate traits, combined with its ability to check Thundurus-I and Talonflame, was very much appreciated. Also as mentioned in the video, it rose up to UU thanks to being one of the tier's best Zapdos checks, as well as its solid matchup against Tornadus-T. It received a lot of hype prior to it rising, but ironically enough, such hype kind of died down by the time it finally rose up to UU proper. It is still a solid mon, but with many weaknesses and competition flying around, it is def more on the niche side (B+ on the VR). With Zapdos recently rising to OU by usage, it is very likely that Rhyperior's journey in UU has come to an end. Funnily enough, on the exact same tier shift on it rising to UU, it would've risen to RU instead since it barely had enough usage, so RU is its next stop in its Gen 9 journey.

I LOVE the fact that these two have Megahorn in their movepool. It would be really easy for Gamefreak to say “oh, Rock and Ground coverage is already super good, let’s just give them some elemental punches and Normal-type moves and call it a day.” But Megahorn does SO MUCH for their coverage, patching up a lot of holes and making them better at what they’re designed to do. They’re super well-balanced too; incredible strengths along with really exploitable weaknesses, helping to ensure that only the most skilled players can really excel with them. What an awesome pair of Pokemon.

Rhyperior will always be the definition of a unit (on the physical side, that is). When you can work around both of those 4x weaknesses, it hits like a bulldozer stacked on top of a tank. My favorite thing is that on top of Ground/Rock STAB, this thing gets so much damn coverage to hit a ton strong!

Ground/Rock is pretty polarizing as a dual type. Pretty powerful STABs, but very easy to exploit with two 4x weaknesses in Grass and Water and several other common weaknesses with Fighting, Ice, and Ground itself. Steel's a less common weakness, but sees more use in later Gens due to Fairy types.

@@comics4556 It's not about what you are trying to hit with it, it's more about what your opponent THINKS their counter is for A Rhyperior. Alot of the time, I'll see my opponent has a Lando-T during Team Preview, and I'll lead with Rhyperior while they of course lead with that very Lando-T. Now, because of their Intimidate, they strongly assume 1 of a few things: A) They 2 shot you with Earthquake, while they know due to outspeeding, they can take 1 Ice Punch. (And they only risk a 10% Freeze) B) They set up a Swords Dance thinking you will Switch Turn 1, or Stealth Rock Turn 1, and knowing they still live 1 of any physical move, they can then 1 shot with an SD Boosted Earthquake on Turn 2. Or C) They slow play and go for Stealth Rock, planning to U-Turn on Turn 2, again knowing they tank any physical move you use! So, since they outspeed, they either get off a Safe: Earthquake, Swords Dance, or Stealth Rock... but then you surprise them with a Turn 1 Modest Specs Boosted Ice Beam, and you OHKO their Lando-T! Giving you a very early 6-5 lead, and giving you some long term momentum as they just lost a likely Key Pokémon on their team (I say long term cause they just lost an Intimidate user, and get a Free Switch after losing Lando-T, but they can't rely on it for the battle, which has lots of effects.) And starting Turn 2, you can afford to play more carefully since you already have the lead! It's the funniest thing, since their is 1 other likely result to them losing Lando-T to Specs Rhyperior... they Forfeit cause they are Big Mad! 😂

I think I created it during Gen 7, which is around the time I was using Flyinium Z Mamoswine, since Mamoswine could use Peck, giving you a 1 time 100 Base Power Move to use. That, I did see on KZbin however, and just thought it was hilarious! Lol I'm a strong believer that Originality is the best counter to the Top meta, due to people not expecting the unexpected. Doesn't matter if Rhyperior has Base 55 Special Attack, if their Rhyperior counter/check is not invested in their Special Defense! 😁

Offensively, Rock/Ground has PERFECT coverage where the ONLY way to resist it is to be a Rock resistant type with Levitate, an honor it shares with Ice/Ground. Defensively though, it’s outclassed by the (as of 2024) Mamoswine exclusive combo.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Rhydon boasted the strongest Earthquake damage wise until Gen 3, when Groudon appeared, as well as the strongest Earthquake for non-legendaries until Gen 4, when Rhyperior appeared. Mostly due to its base 130 Attack and STAB in its Earthquake. Edit: This is before any Attack boosts, assuming perfect IVs and fully invested in Attack EVs and Adamant nature for all Pokemon that learned Earthquake.

How to improve them... 1. What's the point with Reckless if you have Rock Head, or at least for Rhydon? Intimidate would be a lot better, or at least something else. 2. Have Rock Wrecker work like Gen 1 Hyper Beam. Seriously, why do they have a rock type Giga Impact? 3. Head Smash for Rhydon. We all know why. If not, Rhydon has Rock Head. 4. I've heard of the Earth idea a few times. I doubt Pokémon would ever do that, but it would help out Rhyperior
