In service it was found to be problematic and a different one was used on all subsequent batches. One important aspect of the Famas for the french navy was the ability to use foreign made ammunition for commando type actions. In reality the G2 version was only actively used by the Fusiliers Marins (Marines) and the Commandos Marine (Navy seals). Batches of around 200 pieces were kept onboard the major surface vessels where they stayed brand new ;)

I doubt there would be enough interest in the US to justify someone making new receivers and ATF-acceptable semi-only parts; same thing that's happened with retired FNCs and other classic Cold War rifles.

11:20 "these are very rare rifles outside of Franc" - incorrect. They are very rare rifle, period. Most French gun enthusiasts (like me) would sell a liver or a relative to get their hand on a FAMAS... most of the 'civilian' sales were made in the US, converted select-fire firearms are now essentially impossible to get as a civy and all the FAMAS in the army will be destroyed after being replaced by the HK... a tragedy, really.
@krautandsalo4 жыл бұрын
When the Bundeswehr decided to destroy most of their G3s, they were cut using plasmacutters. Since there were so many rifles to be destroyed, they simply weighed the rifles going into the workshop and weighed the scrap coming out. Since this method of destruction removes a certain amount of material there was a certain amount of leeway in how much the scrap had to weigh. Meaning, that this leeway was used to take working rifles as souvenirs by the workers. (At least that's what my seargent in the army told me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) So there is hope that the French might use the same system, and some guns might be saved.

Its a tragedy for the french manufacture of arms but changing a rifle obselete because of its lack of modularity, sharing ammo with friendlies and choosing a rifle that used to be used mostly by sof, its a good move. Its too bad France is doing it while the US is looking at other types of ammunition, when picatinny rails are being phased out for mlok(or keymod configuration). But then again, it is typically french to join the party late. We're still rocking CE and patrols still are not trigger ready if they were to be engaged after all the 'recent' Paris attacks.

Regarding the grenade sights : - the indirect fire one has two positions, 45° and 74° ; you are not allowed to use the latter in "times of peace" (i.e. not for training) due to risks of the grenade coming back towards you in case of strong winds - the direct fire one, as far as I know, has been removed on most FAMAS, and is replaced by disposable sights that you tack on the front sight of the rifle itself. Those disposable sights come with the grenades themselves in the newer batches. Which is a problem when you have to shoot older rifle grenade batches that come without those grenade sights (but still come with 7.5 mm bullets to shoot with the MAS 49-56, very old batches indeed) and no one manages to aim their grenade properly. Hope those precisions were of interest.

Such a shame the French sold their armories and can't keep making these. Gorgeous rifles.
@MrBandholm4 жыл бұрын
I suspect that had France been a bit more flexible and open about their rifles, that a lot of other nations would have adopted the Famas, nations with small but elite military units, would likely be more interested in something like a FAMAS, than the AR-family, due to the ARs for a long time needing both a long rifle and a carbine.

THALES and Nexter are stil french conglomerates that make weapons. THALES makes the excelent f90 in Australia and Nexter owns FNH. So there stil a litle hope
@DC20224 жыл бұрын
@@PapaSchultz74 NEXTER does NOT own FNH. GIAT owned it but it was sold back to Belgium just before 2000. This was a real money pit mainly due to belgium. But France doesn't really car about small arms. They don't see this industry as a strategic need, so they don't invest on this sector, focusing on more expensive and critical parts of army like vehicles (but even then, they started a joint venture with KMW, KNDS, to build the next MBT of german and french armies and are doing the same with next gen fighter)

I wish Ian did mention this, but when NATO picked their 5.56 round, France actually left NATO so they basically didn't have to comply with NATO standards
@Jehty_4 жыл бұрын
@@MrHat. nope. 5.56 was standardized in 1980. France withdrew from the integrated NATO command in 1966. So France never left the NATO, and their withdrawal was a few years before the 5.56×45mm NATO was even developed.
@vincentkermorgant4 жыл бұрын
@@MrHat. Not exactly. The MAS developped the FAMAS around the time when the Vietnam war was ending and France made a bet that the new M193 5,56mm would become the new Nato standard. The design and specs were finalized around 1975, a time when the US was still using the M193. By the time production started (1977 IIRC) the S109 wasn't adopted yet. Once production started, that was it. No change of ammunition when millions of rounds were produced yearly for a conscription army. Fun fact : If Belgium had purchased Mirage F1 instead of F16s, the FAMAS would have never been adopted and the french army would have used the FNC instead (it was part of the proposed deal)

I would love to see some real statistics regarding application of "dingus and doodads" immediately adjacent to the trigger (safeties, bolt catch, etc.) and how those affect the rate of AD/ND for weapons that have that feature. So many manufacturers have dabbled with the idea, and it seems that future generations often exclude it. Modern firearm theology does the whole "booger hook off bang switch" thing and yet companies still dabble in that real estate.

I suspect the handguard change was for more than just mittens accommodation; full-length trigger guards like that are quite common on bullpup rifles and not on others; from what I've read it's to compensate for the lack of magazine well forward of the hand which normally helps prevent people from smashing their hands into doorframes, or rocks when going prone, etc. etc.

The 1 in 7.7" twist was adopted to stabilize the M856 Tracer projectile, not so much the M855 projectile. To get the necessary flight characteristics of the light for construction tracer projectiles to pair with the M855 the tracer has a loooong bearing surface.

I can just say, Ian, that I like the FAMAS G2 quite a lot! I don't think this 100% NATO-compatible French Navy bullpup assault rifle is going to be replaced by the HK416 in the coming years, which is good news. Special forces in the army, the navy and the air force use a variety of weapons, sometimes transformed according to their requirements. The HK416 is less romantic than the clairon, no doubt about it, but it already exists in various adaptations according to the customers' requirements... German practical sense and industrial power.... So it goes...
