Wow. The opening line, and its accompanying graphic, literally botches the movie name! Not a good start. 🙁

Huge fan of Canadian Graham Greene. I really appreciate how Costner included so many First Nations people and laboured to depict them with dignity and respect.

I, like many people am a lot of things. I have been a lay historian for decades, military historian. I served 7 years, the last three in the Special forces in direct action. Prior to service, as a Native advocate I could watch movies like this, for some reason after having served multiple tours and missions on foreign soil, I can no longer watch anything where Native Americans are slaughtered. Or movies where kids are victims. I tried watching this movie a couple years ago, up to the point I knew the tribes were about to be wiped out. And clicked it off. So never saw the ending. Didn't even know there was sequel.

In the movie, Stands With A Fist was not trying to commit suicide, when John Dunbar found her. In many cultures worldwide, it is a custom for the women to go into a phase of mourning, when their husbands die. This is often accompanied by self-flagellation or mutilation, in order to free the soul, promote spiritual healing, and to preserve natural order. It is within the purview of her father, Kicking Bird, to tell her when she can stop mourning. When Dunbar found her on the prairie, she had sought solace near the tree, and was singing a ritual song, while lightly cutting her arms and wrists. That is why she had the knife and all that blood adhering to the lap of her clothing.

Yeah the way they thought back then was crazy. Yet, doesn’t mean she wasn’t in the processes of killings herself. They also believe that if they survived this it was called a rebirth. They were giving different names etc at times to promote the change. Many cultures have the name change to promote change.

I agree with Wes, his performance in “Dances With Wolves”, made the movie. It was riveting. Gil Birmingham should be on your list, “Under The Banner Of Heaven” was his movie. Your list should have had Zahn McClarnon.

Larry Joshua's character was not a sergeant, (He was the captain) and did not treat Dances with wolves badly! The character Spivey (Tony Pierce) treated Dunbar badly! You also have some Rodney D. Grant clips when describing Otter! You need to take this whole post down and try again!

No. It was a different wolf. There are more than 1 individual to a species. In other words, if a wolf dies, there are still other wolves

I find many of your commentaries very interesting, but many times when you talk of one individual you have images of another, making it confusing. Like Sergeant Bauer, you have the wrong character showing from beginning to almost the end. Dances with Wolves isn't the only one. So I guess I say your editing is poor. Story line is good and captivating.

Kevin Costner didn't just act and produce, he also directed the movie Dances With Wolves. Why no mention of his acting, producing and directing the movie Open Range from 2003. There are many other misses, mistakes and mispronunciations and it is regrettable this documentary was not not better researched, written, and produced because it is a subject of interest and deserved better.
