I can’t believe they didn’t mention the musical score composed and conducted by the great John Barry. The music throughout the movie really set the theme of romance and Lakota Sioux life on the vast open plains. The music was so beautiful it brought me to tears.

I don't actually like any kk film, except this. So moving, so beautiful. I could only watch it once because it is so sad...we all knew before it started...there is no happy ending. The only criticism I have is the 1990s hairstyles of the leading lady amongst the traditional Indian style 😊

We chose to go see this brand new movie that had just came out. When we walked out I really wanted to go back in and watch it again. When watching Dances With Wolves for the first time in theaters, I was stunned with how it captured my soul. At the end, I could not get out of my seat. I could not stop thinking about it. I returned to see it over and over again. I later made a pilgrimage to the Dakotas to see the Badlands and was so very fortunate to discover there was a tour I could take outside of Rapid City, SD showing the very spots where Costner filmed this production. To stand on the hills. see the tree featured in the film, and the winding river below where the tipi village was was most moving to me. Then one of the ladies there presented me with the FOUR HOUR version of Dances With Wolves. I discovered some of the BEST scenes were in it that were cut from the commercial production. What a treasure to see and have this un-cut version. Two more Notes: Fans here should get Michael Blake's book release of Dances With Wolves. There are so many scenes in it that explain more than the movie does, and really fills in some gaps so that you can appreciate the movie even more. Also, we should remember that some of these actors have since died, including Michal Blake, Floyd Westerman, and Robert Pastorelli. Dances With Wolves was a truly amazing experience for cast, crew and viewers!

I’m going to look for the four hour version. Once, I watched a version of the movie that had added parts I had never seen before. At the time I did not know there was a four hour version. I was watching it on tv and I wish I could remember what I punched in the remote to get that version. And what channel. Thank you for telling us about the four hour version of the movie. 😊 I remember in the beginning of the movie the Union leader made like a cameo presentation real quick before John went to ask for his orders to be sent to the fort. Then we saw the crazy man kill himself. At the moment that’s all I can remember right now. Mary McDonnell was perfect for this role. Being a bit older, she had beginning lines around her mouth and eyes which perfectly fit the picture of a woman living with a native American tribe who had to do what all women had to do living a nomadic lifestyle. Fetch water, weave baskets, prepare hides etc etc. A hard life that is reflected in the skin.

Camping implies that you can seek man made comforts of an urban type while living out on the plains it was a way to survive. Need a tent? Make it. Blankets? Make it. Clothing? Make it. Food? Find it, harvest/kill then prepare or preserve it. Nothing was easy, everyone had their job and worked hard or the collective would suffer during the winter.

The bean counters wanted a two hour. If you don't have the four hour, two disc Blu Ray version with commentary, try to find it.

I grew up with the Lakota Sioux in South Dakota. I was totally immersed and intrigued with these special peoples. As a NPS ranger I worked at Wind Cave National Park with the bison. After my stint as a ranger there I would periodically return to "work" the bison with giving them shots, selecting animals to maintain a healthy genetic mix, and choosing the bison that would be shipped to other parts of the country. I feel that Kostner honestly captured the essence of what I call home. I could lead you even today to the places where the footage was shot.

Big Warrior -The Lakota warrior who found Dunbars hat on the prairie was represented by Percy White Plume. Percy was born on and has lived his life on the Pine Ridge Rez over in Manderson. Together with his family, they have shepherded the Horse Spirit Society as well as being the founder & owner of Lakota Trails, a Horse Nation program for outdoor recreation. For seven years I pulled the White Plumes horse trailer in December for the Big Foot/Future Generations Ride in remembrance of those massacred at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890. I am grateful for getting to know the White Plumes and family, riders and those of the community during my time spent with them and for the privilege of being a bridge builder- as one whose heart sought reconciliation through my actions in being a driver during the Big Foot Memorial Ride. It was not without mistakes on my part though never with ill intent but unintended through omission, having never been taught where cultural boundaries lie.

I never thought it would be possible, but I fell in love all over again... With this movie! Bringing me out of a certain downward spiral. Last of the Dogmen is also a great movie showing the trials of a tribe of Cheyenne living in a secluded valley accessed through a tunnel under a waterfall in north Montana. Staring Tom Berenger and Barbara Hershey. Great movie and scenic views and life for the Cheyenne people.

Saw this great movie in Boston shortly after it was released. What a beautiful portrayal of the lives of native Americans pre- European invasion. At the end of the movie no one left the theatre but watched the credits in total silence and awe. I was especially moved when they said the death of Crazy Horse at Fort Robinson, not far from where I live, was the beginning of the end of the Great Plains Indians. Sadly, a great people lost their way of life.

Shirlyhardt: The “beautiful portrayal of the lives of Native Americans” wasn’t “pre-European invasion.” It was at the end of the invasion in the 1870’s, 200 years later! The time period of this movie occurred after the European established Jamestown in Virginia in 1607, the landing of the Mayflower in 1620, after the European fur trappers, after the Louisiana Purchase, after the Lewis and Clark 1803 expedition, the Gold Rush and after the end of the Civil War and after the near extinction of the massive buffalo herds! But, yes, it was a beautiful portrayal of the Native American’s way of life.

I have to say, i find highly amusing when Americans decry the European 'invasion' of the America's. Do you(they) not realise that without that 'invasion', you(they) wouldn't be alive, you(they) would never have been born. You wouldn't have the cinema you watched this film in, or the roads on which you travelled in order to get to that cinema, you wouldn't have the money to spend in order to get there or pay for your ticket and multitude of snacks. Median household income is $18,834. The reservation has no industry or any form of employment for these people. If they want to find work they need to drive around 111 miles to Rapid City, S.D. They suffered massacres, disease and broken treaties year after year. They made numerous treaties with the US government which were all broken. One hundred eleven years ago in the tiny village of White Clay, Ne., population 12 or less, a bar was opened on the border of the reservation. Alcohol is forbidden on reservations. Native Americans cannot assimilate alcohol and become fatally addicted. It has been called “Liquid Genocide” for the natives. One in four babies born on the Res suffer fetal alcohol syndrome.

This film told us a story in such a way that we were able to live it and breathe it. It remains one of my favorite films of all time. The story evokes emotion and for the 1st time … I think allowed the audience to see the Native American perspective. Truly a masterpiece!

I applaud all the actors that played in this epic movie. Learning a new language and being able to converse is hard. I didn't know there was a male and female version of Lakota. Every time it is on I'm watching. My son asks why I watch it because it is so old. My answer was it shows a different perspective than regular soldier/Indian movies and I love the panoramic views.

The fort in the movie is still there. I bought a beautiful elk horn knife at the fort when I visited in late 90's. Seen the movie a dozen times. One of the best ever imo! I got to shake hands with a Sioux warrior who was an USAF F4 pilot in Vietnam. The whole area there around Sioux Falls to me has a magical wonderment about it. I was 10 years old when Dances With Wolves was in theaters. My parents had a lot of reservations about trying to watch a 3 hour long “western” in the theater, with me. But my mom loved Native American history & she began sharing that passion with me before I could even talk. I was definitely the only 12 year old with her very own copy of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I will never forgot seeing Dances for the first time, in a packed movie theater, holding hands with my mom…crying at the same scenes, laughing at the same scenes, and taking in every tiny detail in between. It’s not just my all time favorite movie because it is the most beautiful movie I’ve ever seen, it’s also because of how it felt to watch it with my favorite person. 2 weeks after seeing it with my dad, my mom & I snuck off to see it again, just us. I got it for Christmas the year it was released on Video, and I still have the VHS copy. I have no idea how many times I’ve seen it, but I’ll never be done watching it.

Having a hobby of studying Native American cultures, I was astounded by the use of Lakota in the film and the accuracy of depicting Pawnee and Dakota garb and hairstyles. Amazing. The criticisms are nit-picking and petty. This film deserved all its acclaim and more. Costner is more than a star, he is a real, down-to-earth, thinking human being. A rare commodity on this planet!

The true arrogance of the US military and the difficult times that the American aboriginal people endured is well portrayed in this remarkable movie. I was there during a couple days of the filming of this movie & have a few pics that I have shared over time on fb. I was invited to come out on location by Graham Green, who played the medicine man. I at the time did not even know who Kevin Costner was until he walked into a lounge I was working at in Rapid City SD where some of the actors & screen help were staying at the time. I feel blessed to have been able to go out on location & watch some of the actual filming of this movie. I even have a pic of Kevin actually filming a part of the movie where I am standing right over his shoulder. Great pic! What a great time it was & the memories will stay with me forever...

Cool, it that the four hour one? I accidentally stumbled on it when pressing the buttons on my remote, and I noticed some added parts I had not seen before, and I’ve watched the movie countless times, but that one time I saw it with added parts. Interesting. Couldn't sleep last night and this movie came on. Hadn't seen it in years. I have always loved the movie. It's nice to know Kevin Costner was not a jerk. There've been too many stories about lead actors behaving like prima donnas screaming at crew, even those that are junior for honest mistakes. It's nice to hear about positive stories about good people. It translated on the screen and the relationships look genuine. Was truly a beautiful movie.

If I had a so-called multi-millionaire "friend" that knew I was trying to survive by washing dishes and he sent me a sleeping bag and stove I would returned those thing to him marked postaghe not have had ANY further contact with him, not ever. That's an outrageous insult and that IS being a jerk in my book. I would NEVER treat a "friend" like that!!

@@karlheinzvonkroemann2217 Maybe Kostner was not ungenerous, but knew damn well NOT to give him any money. The man started quarreling with studio representative after Kostner had gone out of his way to get him meetings (he was not just "frustrated" as in narrated in his video. Why would he be "frustrated" even if they had objections and wishes, it was a good sign, and he could always engage Kosner to help with the vision. he likely could not control himself. I'd say he had a genius idea and executed it well, but he may have had SEVERE problems, most likely to do with addiction (or he would have had OTHER friends and family helping him out). And an able bodied man can find a job that is not less than 4 USD per hour, nor does he have to move to anohter state. I assume he had problems with the wrong kind of people (loan sharks ? I mean WHY move to another state. Certainly wasn't for his career, the crappy job was because no one else would hire him.

I watched this beautiful movie twice at theater. Bought it when it came out. So beautiful was the scenery, the wolves, Buffalo, Indians, and just a very earthy movie. The music is so beautiful for the grandeur of the film. Thank you for this beautiful film.

Glad to traverse Memory Road with your guidance. I felt that the film was spectacular a Magnum Opus for Costner! The use of a real buffalo herd was spectacular. I feel as kindly to Dances with Wolves as I did to Jeremiah Johnson and blasting open negative stereotypes about indigenous people. Film had high action, realistic treachery, tender love development and fabulous wide angle prairie shots. Russell Means might be a little envious to be so critical. In Last of the Mohicans an erroneous implication was made about extinction of the small tribe that occupies areas of Wisconsin. Point being, inaccuracies do occur without desecrating the spirit of the storyline which is to "humanize" lesser publicized groups that have unfairly been put in spider boxes.

I agree with so many of the other comments. great movie, great actors, great everything. I don't know how many times I have seen it. many many times. then one thing that I see as a great honor is the reaction of the audience when we first saw it at their movies. when the movie ended everyone sat still for a few minutes. No one jumped up to get to their car in the parking lot. We just sat there and absorbed the power of the story, then we all stood and applauded. people applauded the mechanical projection on a screen..hundreds of miles from any of the actors or writers or crew. the movie had earned our show of respect for the whole experience. Never before and never since have I seen anything like this. I shall never forget any of the experience. thank you Mr Costner and everyone else in this production

Dances was always my favorite...saw maybe 10 times over the years. Everything is great from the Tatanka scenes to the music theme for Dunbar. I agree with the Pope...
