Drawing a comparison to gin rummy has really helped me get an idea of what mahjong is, so thank you for that.

I think that's been my go to reference for about thirty mahjong games. It's been tempting to reuse the fizzbin reference but that's a bit much.

This is just so aesthetic for the time period. The colors, for the most part, satisfying, and the tiles a higher resolution than expected... A shame I'm just a barbarian with no understanding of Gin Rummy either.

Going back to the first time you had to explain this, it's funny you don't know how often you were going to say this 😂

This Mahjong did get an English translation patch a few years ago, so it's only gotten more accessible since then! I'm not sure it makes sense to spell "Riichi" as "Reach", but that might have been to make it fit within the box.

I like how this is also an official Nintendo Entertainment System game due solely to a limited run for Hong Kong's version of the console.

I have about a dozen versions for Super Famicom and a few more for Famicom including this one. The thing that makes you struggle at first is they play the Japanese Riichi style of Mahjong. Drove me nuts at first when I didn't know what Yaku was. It would look like you have a winning hand but it wouldn't let you go out. Thankfully things like KZbin videos could explain what was missing.

Thank you for providing an overview of the game.

Your crash course was amazing, but I'll never understand this. Great video!

I have to wonder, was this video published before the end of the Washizu Iwao arc 🤔

Last year I was in a local national game shop (not gamestop) and someone tried to offload a lot of their collection, this (complete) and a loose f-1race came in, store refused to take it, and I got the pair for $5. I really enjoy F1 Race, but I can not for the life of me figure out how to play the game. I want to play this Mahjong game but understanding isn't there, can't seem to find a good 'for idiots' style document to play this on Famicom. I've retained it hoping one day it happens.

Over the course of the project, I have learned just enough about mahjong that I don't completely embarrass myself as I play, but I'm still awful at the game...

wow even in Japan Nintendo needed a Trojan Horse of sorts for their console? honestly had no idea how any of it worked but that sounds like a good start, I'm sure.

Just curious... With all that collecting did you get your hands on one of those controllers with like 21 buttons on it? Used for playing ide yousuke meijin no jissen mahjong and a sequel I think.

No, I didn't get my hands on one of them. I got my hands on three of them!
