I feel this is the Famicom equivalent of the first NES TMNT game, a ninja themed game made by a major publisher otherwise known for quality that was based on a popular cartoon of time that sold well at the time, but aged about as well as a that leftover milk carton that's been in your frkdge for two years.

The difference is, the TMNT game is actually pretty decent in comparison.

Finally! The one Famicom game Dr. Sparkle accidentally skipped over in Chrontendo and never got around to covering. A small hole in my heart has been filled.

Oh no did he ever acknowledge it?

Dr. Sparkle has mentioned before that he accidentally skipped it, and apparently people used to bug him about it a bunch. At this point, though, with Chrontendo slowing down a bit, I'm just glad to have whatever Dr. Sparkle gives us.

"and you had to learn to love it." Yeah... kids in the US in the 80s had to learn to love a lot of lousy NES games because some of us just didn't have the good options. You get ONE game and that's your one game for a long, long time.

Honestly idk why gamer nostalgia is ever taken seriously in the community bc stuff like this is such a common experience.. Bonus points if they couldn't get past level one. Like.. No man, the video game wasnt actually fun, its just licensed.

First heard of Ninja Hattori-kun from that one Nickelodeon India video where the kid teaches people how to dab.

The game's pixel art is expressive... for the time and platform... plus it's made for young reflexes and young time management. But not so young that you won't feel like a ninja yourself when you finally master it. What more could a kid from that era ask for? Especially in a world where Super Mario Bros wasn't yet seen as the design Bible it became. This game reminds me of quite a few European micro computer classics.

That live action Ninja Hattori will haunt my dreams, I must share that image

I'd heard of this one, saw it in an online shop randomly. had to figure it probably wasn't very good... but I'd say your assessment on why the kids loved it was spot-on!

Another Ninja game which I mix up with Ninja Jajamaru-kun and plain old Ninja-Kun so they all meld together in my head... but I guess I have tried this one. I have a spreadsheet of games on multicarts I own and I gave poor Ninja Hattori-Kun 2 out of 5. I am actually pretty generous with ratings so this one must have really annoyed me.

Was that the bonus stage that was turned into a homebrew Super Cassette Vision game with Pop Team Epic?

Definitely something I would avoid. I remember seeing the anime that this game is based on 10 years ago and I honestly didn't really enjoy it. Somehow the source material manages to be quite popular in many Asian countries, especially in South Asia where Hattori-kun was so popular to the point that the new series that is currently on air was made with that market in mind. I get it why people love this game back then (and surprisingly even now). There weren't many choices and this one seems to be the most attractive to children back then since it was based on a popular manga/anime material.
