I suggest making all three front windows in the doghouse as big as possible to maximize your view forward, even if that means fixed glass rather than the hatches. It would improve your sight-lines thru the rather tall doghouse structure in front of the helm and will be much much more aesthetically pleasing from both inside and outside. If you need hatch ventilation install them in the coach roof above those two trapezoids where you were talking about mounting them.

The hatches will still give sight lines forward but the big plus, while under sail, is the forced ventilation that will occur. Roof hatches won’t give that through breeze while underway. You can also pass drinks etc through the hatch to someone forward. 😊

I’ve watched several wooden boat builds (the usual) and they are great for the skills and the beauty of the product. I’ve not watched so many fibreglass builds but your channel is great. The pace of the build in videos is very good. If I were younger I’d love to do something similar but we cannot wind the clock back. But I can watch you and some others so thank you and hope to see you sail it someday!

The water trap around the top of the doghouse is brilliant. Well done! The side windows as rectangles look rather odd to me. I’m really struck by how odd it looks. I vote for size equal to or at least symmetrical in terms of height with the center window. No doubt whatever you decide will be as beautiful as it is functional.

Remember, the "side windows" aren't really windows, but clear/tinted hatches that will open and close for ventilation. Those (if I understand Matt correctly) will be purchased and not made by Matt himself, and generally come in square/rectangular shapes.

Seems as if this boat has been through a lot! Beached by a hurricane, t-boned a large steel ship, whipped around the world at the Vendée (been around Cape Horn...), most definitely Duracell will enjoy its new incarnation as a "Comfortable Cruising Home", and, as far as remembering each project while you are sailing it in the French Polinesia... maybe you guys will just enjoy the finished piece, rather than dissecting the parts. And KZbin will be around for at least another 30 years, so all those memories are well kept. Episode 101 was womderful as always!

Loved the history about Hurricane Bob. We lived in the town of Narragansett and lost a couple trees in that Hurricane. The hurricane eye went right over us - only a few miles from Jamestown and your boat's beaching. You guys are perfect for keeping this boat's history interesting!!

I was living on the Jersey shore when Hurricane Bob hit. It was a late season storm that took the region by surprise. NJ dodged the worst of the storm, but it slammed New England.

It's interesting how you chose to orient the flanking windscreen hatches to the center lens, which is opposite of the flanking windows orientation to the companionway entry. Such conundrums are inescapable in projects of this scale. You know the choice is good if you can explain it. I start with "Is it 'consistent' with what the eye sees?" 😢

Scoring the corner pieces to bend them is called "kerfing". Ironically I learned this from someone whose English is his second language: Mads from Sail Life... his English vocab is better than mine, and I'm a native speaker of 67 years! I remember Duracell beaching in Jamestown and the legend of Mike Plant sailing it throughout the storm. I was racing 210s in Marblehead as a teenager and we had to race into Boston to get our trailer to haul the boat out. We didn't make it back in time.

Hey Guys, Matt, one thing I will always look back on with this project is particularly your Mum and Dad’s involvement, it kind of seems proper that in a little way they will always be part of this project and sailing with you. Matt, why don’t you make the water catcher sides higher than across the top, I would imagine that the boat would always be on a list when under sail so wouldn’t the water run over the sides, sorry that’s a non-sailing boater question who just loves your channel. The meal looked so yummo

Matt - Your a very wealthy man indeed having a supportive family like that even if they were Stink Potters in the past. ;> Kidding aside did they also mix it up and sail recreationally on the side or were they always just power boaters. That first family cruise with them will allow them to enjoy the fruits of their labors and should be a delightful time. I wouldn't leave it up to KZbin to maintain an archive of your adventure here and would encourage some personal archival quality backups along with hanging on to a device that can read them. I made the mistake of starting mine on TR-1 Data Tapes which now are hard to find compatible with modern PC operating systems. Best!

I don't sail , the extent of my boating experience is getting on ferries lol, but I love watching people who are very good at what they do build and fix things , I have been watching your channel for about 18 months , and I also watch Sampson Boat Co channel , and watching you both make something that essentially does the same thing lol , but watching how the techniques and technology has changed . I just love what both channels do and seeing how far you have come .

The edge pieces that you slotted to give you that nice cut is called a 'kerf cut'. You can do it to bend certain pieces of wood the same way their is a formula or a calculator you can use online depending on the angle you want to curve

It so nice to see your parents get involved with the boat build and especially how much your mom has contributed to the long-term boat build. When you plan for your rainwater catchment drains, you may want to consider adding a raised filtration screen. I've seen that on other boats and it helps to capture some of the large chunks of debris so that it doesn't end up in your holding tanks. Also, for the front side windows, the position the cardboard is in now looks very nice, but at the end of the day which orientation would give you the best viewing angle for sailing?

to the question of will you remember people and what happened during the build? - If you play(or listen) to a different piece of music for each significant event/ happening. It will stick in your mind for ever. Not sure how that works but we used to take trainees out in the big blue ocean for sail training. Insisting each class/ group brought their own music along. 30 years later - put the music on - and you are right back at the time.

I built a 6 ft x 8 ft hard top with a dam at the edge similar to yours. A good hand-hold and great water catchment system. I was able to catch 16 gallons in a So FL rainstorm and fill my water tank. I can see your roof catching 30 gallons in a heavy rainstorm. Not insignificant.

I wondered if you knew about the Hurricane Bob grounding in Jamestown. I was there to watch Duracell removed from the beach. I wasn't so lucky. I lost my Hobie 33 sloop in nearby Padanaram Harbor on Buzzards Bay when she ended up on the bottom of a pile of boats that drug their moorings and ended up on some rocks. Padanaram is the home to Concordia who built Mike Plant's subsequent boat Coyote. But the Concordia and Coyote story is best told on another day. But I did see it launched for a float tests before the keel was attached.

Matt, Really like the way you think and work with composites. Put hand holds everywhere possible. Anywhere you are on a vessel you might need to grab a hold suddenly. Something needs to be there. I'm assuming that when you have a glob of goo you've just scraped off there's a target in mind for it. Perhaps the next fillet? thanks, Glenn/NC

Visibility doesn't seem to be an issue. Rainwater catchment will be a bonus. Will the battery bank be big enough to power a water maker? If so, it'll be another source of "free" water with solar charging the batteries. Thanks for the episode.
