In my experience, some doctors are too eager to diagnose familial hypercholesterolemia. Mine was proud of his 'expertise in hyperlipidemia' and was eager to put me on drugs. When I went vegan, my cholesterol went from 210 to 150. I am thrilled at this result without meds!

How come the country with the absolute most vegan/vegetarian population, India, has the highest levels of heart attacks ? Also, fasting actually elevates the cholesterol levels

I am vegan, with an occasional processed foods once in a blue moon, I got my blood work today, I am on Crestor because everyone in my family siblings and parents have high cholesterol, my triglycerides went from 140 to 191 in the last six months. I recently have two herniated discs and have gotten three epidurals, I wonder if the shots spiked my triglycerides? Before I changed my eating my lipid panel 4 years ago was very high in the 300s, but since then I had lowered to the 130-140 range until this blood test

I think it's just about their potential insulin spikes. People's ability to handle sugar can vary but if you are active you are probably fine.

@@mvpmvp2980 Unacceptable insulin spikes only happen on a high fat diet. The Glycemic Index is very dependend on the subject consuming a high fat diet.

For sure a challenge. I weight train, get in 4 hours of cardio per week, eat 90% calories from whole plant foods, no animal products, 80+ grams fiber per day, 20% calories from fat, water fast for 5 days a couple times per year and.....I still have high cholesterol. Total is 208 and my LDL is over 140. Very frustrating and I don't want to have to take drugs.

Dude, you’re fine. How old are you? Cholesterol levels go up with age, especially after 50. If your HDL is above 50 (for a man, 40 for a woman), and your TG is low (below 70) and VLDL low, hsCRP below 1, you have nothing to worry about as far as CVD. I do the same as you, but my numbers are worse LDL above 160 TC above 240, but TG around 70 and HDL around 70, hsCRP 0.5. I elected to go on atorvastatin (Lipitor) 10mg daily and now my numbers are outstanding, TC just above 150, HDL in the 70’s, LDL in the low 70’s, TG in the 60’s. I have not experienced any negatives from the statin that I can tell and I’ve been on it for 2 years now… I’m not pushing statins on anyone as everyone has a different response to them, I’m just reporting my experience, YMMV. If I had your numbers I wouldn’t go on a statin, but hey, I’m not a doctor, so I can’t make any recommendations either way.

@@DessicatedCadaver Cholesterol levels go up with age as we exercise less (and hence burn less fats, brains only burn sugars) and stay for longer on the wrong diet. After all, people on a low fat whole plant based diet have lower cholesterol levels at any age. Also, what is cholesterol??? Cholesterol is fats that we ingested that are wrapped in proteins so they become water soluble and can be transported through the blood system. In other words, don't eat the excess fats and your cholesterol will come down. Excess fats come from meat, dairy, fish, eggs, oils.

@@DessicatedCadaver i am 35 years old, my current readings: LDL 196, TC 293, HDL 80, Tri 60. I'm in China so every doctor i see tells me i have genetic issue and 100% need statin or i will probably have a heart attack before 45. i eat clean and excercise a ton. i am well aware my LDL level is through the roof, but i've been reading on some recent study saying LDL is not as relevant as they once claim. Not sure who to trust, or what to think, but i really would like a way to stay off Statins for the rest of my life.
