People think that kids learn curse words through tv, but let's be honest, kids learn curse words from their parents and other kids. Ask any 10 year old how many curse words they know and they'll recite as many or more curse words then you.

Censorship based on age/maturity rating is highly inconsistent in both television and film. In film, a G-rating doesn’t devoid a film of dark themes or imagery, and biblical swears such as “hell” or “damn” are permissible. PG and PG-13 films are allowed occasional swears and one f-bomb. R permits multiple usages of the word “fuck” but not unlimited amounts. After a certain threshold the film enters NC-17 which is a rare rating but does occasionally make it to theatres. Nudity is heavily restricted by both the MPA and the FCC in an inconsistent and highly sexist manner towards both sexes. While violence is insanely under regulated. G rated movies almost never have nudity yet shirtless men can be shown. Sometimes the anti-nudity rule exempts films with religious themes. Non-human animal genitalia and mating can also be featured in G rated content. Violence is permissible including graphic killings of non-human characters, and blood must be kept at a minimal amount. PG and PG-13 up the violence and blood but the nudity restrictions remain the same. Though, at times a single scene of a topless woman is permissible, and shots of bare butts of both sexes can slip past the censors. Sexual innuendos and allusions to sex are permissible, but sexual stimulation is unacceptable. R-rating has weird inconsistencies with nudity. Simulated sexual depictions are acceptable but explicit sexual content is forbidden. Women can be shown aroused and fully naked, but an uncovered erect penis automatically hits a film with an NC-17 rating. Even showing flaccid penises in rated R films is extremely rare. Most are blink and you’ll miss it, or mostly obscured by something. Part of the reason for that is MPA heavily regulates penis movement in films. If a flaccid dick flops side to side that’s ok. If it goes up and down then the film gets an NC-17 rating. R rated films can be excessively violent and gory, but not excessively gory. Substantial graphic horror violence and gore will enter NC-17 rating territory. For television, TV-Y is more restrictive than G ratings. TV-Y7 would be more akin to G ratings but darker topics such as war and genocide can be discussed. Occasional naked butts can be shown, and so can topless men and boys. TV-PG and TV-14 are pretty inconsistent as both can be raunchy and violent, but nudity is still limited to just the behind and shirtless men. TV-MA is similar to an R rating, however live action male genitalia is permissible to show, but animated male genitalia is surprisingly rare. I have no idea if it’s the FCC or self censorship. Basically, the FCC and the MPA sexualizes women’s breasts (which is a highly controversial topic), and has a fear of phalluses, particularly erect ones. They are inconsistent on swearing, and their regulation of blood and violence seems to be on the flip of a coin.

Something ironic about the PTV episode: it was subject to network censorship itself. In the FOX airing, they cut out the scene where Peter films an imitation Jackass and ends up taking a dump on Lois as she was passing under him (the screenshot of Peter about to defecate off of the bridge appearing in this video multiple times). It's notable that this incident is what really upset Lois to the point that she calls the FCC to shut down Peter's operation, but with the scene removed, they instead had Lois's actress record a line where she gets upset over the existence of Sideboob Hour (with that scene now preceding the event). Resultingly, this changes up the context quite a bit. In the uncut episode, Lois reaches a breaking point when she becomes personally victimized by Peter's antics. In the FOX airing, on the other hand, she just comes off as a sex-negative prude who doesn't like the idea of a TV show focusing on sideboob (which is pretty ironic given how frequently the series portrays her as a total nympho in the bedroom). This does paint Lois in a much less favorable light, yet at the same time, by making her be at odds with obscene content solely for the sake of "morality" while having no actual stake in it, it also makes her seem like a more accurate portrayal of the real life parental groups who pressured for all these regulations.

I think censorship in general is very stupid. Adults should be able to watch stuff with swears or violence or whatever if they are choosing to, and people should be able to make that content if it is not harming anybody. I learned swears from my parents. I also started watching violent and curse-heavy and inappropriate movies and tv-shows because my parents showed them to me. I am not worse off for my parents showing them to me, and adults with children whom they would actively stop them from watching things (when they are watching them, that is) would also not be worse off, because people hear about swears everywhere. And most of the time, people who watch violent stuff will stop if they are too disturbed or keep watching it if they are not!

Growing up, my parents watched a lot of TV with me. They understood that adult humor doesn't reach kids, so they didn't prevent me from watching shows like The Simpsons, Duckman or Family Guy. When it was cancelled the second time on Fox, I was gifted the DVD set. I'm thankful for those DVDs as the commentaries give so much insight into the show, including Seth's many gripes with the FCC. My favorite being the censorship on a popular diamond commercial using silhouettes. The scene was supposed to be the woman goes down on the guy after having the ring put on her, but the FCC fought with Seth, frame by frame, on how far down the woman was allowed to go, neutering the joke in the end.

There's some Family Guy censorship that's just bizarre. In the episode with all the songs, the uncensored line about looking at your father's penis goes "an acorn in a bed of hair is all you're gonna see down there." It got changed to "an acorn in a nest of twigs and underneath two fetal pigs" which is obviously much grosser! I'd just love to know the logic.

I’m thinking that as the F.C.C. rules on indecency, obscenity and other offensive content on US cable and network TV stations only applies between 6A.M.-10P.M., the fact that _Family Guy_ reruns were from 11P.M.-12M. and 2-3A.M. Eastern on Cartoon Network’s late-night [adult swim] programming block was what allowed “When You Wish Upon A Weinstein” to be aired on [as]. Gotta say, I’m pretty disappointed that FOX was allowed to tell [as] not to air the episode “Partial Tetms of Endearment” and have them comply. I have to wonder, in the wake of recent developments surrounding the never-ending hot-button Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice issue and debate surrounding it, if this episode weren’t produced and ready to release until, say, last year, would it then have been given the green light by FOX and the fellas (and ladies and everyone else) at the freaking F.C.C. to finally air? It certainly seems it would be a lot more topical than 14 years ago, when it successfully aired in the summer of 2010 in the U.K.

9:36 -Sure there were extra conservative people having a coniption fit over the basic concept of the book being shown but I think what most people were upset with was a little more reasonable and profressive. The fact it seemed staged and she had a pasty lead a lot of people to believe this was done as a purposeful exploitation publicity stunt. This can really push into a moral gray area because it was unlikely a decision by Janet Jackson herself by the production studio who ordered it for exploitative purposes on their part. What big multibillion dollar companies can expect a performer to do for a role to manipulate views and money out of the masses IS something that should be considered, especially revolving around minorities that already have a history of being misused in such a way for the leverage of their careers in an unequal job market. Sure you cab say she had tons of money, did not need to do this and even may have been willing but that's not really true when it comes to thsi industry and still encourages that power to the industry over thsoe wjo may not be so comfortble with it.
