To give some extra context to the tin woodsman from the wizard of Oz: In the book, the tin woodsman was at first an human man made out of flesh and bones who was in love with a munchkin woman. Her parents didn't approve of the relationship so they had one of the evil witches curse his axe so that every time he would chop wood, the axe would miss or bounce off of the wood and the woodsman would cut off one of his own limbs. The local blacksmith would make prosthetic limbs for him, head and eventually the axe hit his chest, completing his transformation, he basically became immortal and he never had to sleep, eat or drink ever again. However, when his heart was removed he lost interest in his Munchkin lady love and he would mainly focus on his job. He was rusted in place for a year and during that time he came to miss his munchkin love. The tin woodsman mainly needed a physical heart for psychological reasoning then to be alive. The gang actually has to strong arm the wizard into giving them their wished things and unlike the movie where they got goofy shit. The wizard actually cut a hole into the woodsman's chest and put a little silk heart in it. the cowardly lion got a "magic" potion and the scarecrow got a fake brain stuffed into his head that was kept in place with pins that would pop out of his head whenever he thought too hard about things.

@rebelborn Ironically, the movie might have been more light-hearted. Behind the scenes, it was even more of an horror show. The actress who played the wicked witch of the West had to fall down a trapdoor when she left Munchkin Village with a blowtorch being shot up when she dropped down. The timing was off, and she had to be rushed to the hospital with serious burns. When she came back to set, the first thing they wanted her to film was her flying on the smoking broomstick. She refused, and they had her body double do it. At the first take, the whole broom exploded. The first actor who was hired to play the tinman ended up in the hospital due to poisoning. They used a highly toxic paint to paint him silver. The actor we see on screen was also in constant pain because they used leadpaint on him. You can see how much this burnt his eyes when watching the bluray/4K release because his eyes are blood-red. The actors who played the flying monkeys occasionally would make terrible falls to the ground because they kept on pushing using thinner wires for their flying scenes. The snow that makes Dorothy and the lion sleep when they run through the flower field was pure asbestos, and the less said about the shit Judy Garland had to go through, the better.
