For those (like me) who didn't know... Bridgeport, population about 140,000, is the largest city in Connecticut. In the second half of the 20th Century, it struggled with abandonment and loss of population. It had all the hallmarks that come with this, high crime, abandoned factories and neighborhoods, etc. Only in about the last 25 years has Bridgeport began to turn itself around and get back on its feet.

My sister studied at University of Bridgeport. The first time I visited her was in 2009 during the recession and I remember how appalled I was to see the widespread misery. But I saw a lot of improvement when I did my last visit in 2014. As a non-American watching Family Guy, you learn that you will not always understand every reference behind the jokes. But when this aired I was so shocked that not only did I understand this very niche reference, I had seen and experienced it in real life.

I grew up about 15 minutes away from Bridgeport. It's an eyesore. They had a popular mayor (Ganim) serve time in Federal prison for racketeering. He got re-elected after he got out. Why: he got results. That is Bridgeport.
