Now that Frisians have soundly been converted to Christianity, what would be more Christian than gallivanting off to the Holy Land for a crusade? Oh and also they like, do some land reclamation and stuff...

Cool man! Kunnen jullie nog steeds Nederlands/Fries spreken?

Sadly no, my father was a bit of a lazy guy. His opinion was, "meh, everyone in the Netherlands speaks English anyway...". My Oma and Opa were the only ones he would speak with in his native language, and they didn't live with us so it was usually over the phone. If we went to their house for dinner they would also switch to English (as my mother was Canadian born English/Ukrainian) so I missed out. In school we learn Quebecoise French, which I butcher, so I would probably need to go live in Europe for a while if I wanted to learn anything other than English.

@@jensimaster That's a bummer, as a baby you tend to pick up languages automatically, so if your dad would just have spoken Dutch around you back then? xD TBF the everyone speaks english anyway is what makes so many languages across the world go extinct. 😢 But not that you can do anything about that, nice meeting ya!

This is a great series. I have ancestors from Friesland that were part of a "Noble" family and we've traced them back to the 8th century. Also records of that family's participation in the 5th crusade. Learning about this history is really fascinating

It's too soon to tell about the success of the crusade, we need to see how things continue to play out.

These are great if you want to know about the motorcycle gangs, er, mafia families, er, nobles and clergy. But what about the lives of the masses who lived as serfs of these landowners all the way to the mid-1800 waves of diaspora that cleared them out as agriculture was mechanized?

Sadly there are less sources about the common peoples the further we go back, especially sources that are specifically about Frisians. But the closer this series comes to modern history, the more we can delve into the commoners, for example the emigrations during the 19th century.

The Frisians did fight in Iberia during the Fifth Crusade. They destroyed Fara, Rota and Cadiz.

The Frisians refused to help the Portuguese capture Alcacer du Sal but they did attack three Andalusí cities Faro, Rota, and Cadiz. They were more interested in easier prices than in a long siege in Alcacer. They were so convinced of the value of fighting in Iberia that they informed the pope of their deeds while visiting Rome on the way to the Holy Land.
