Moin!

Many times there was the word "Geborgenheit" / "geborgen". I think no english translation is doing justice to this word. It's a peaceful feeling of security, familiarity, being cared for and coziness. Definitely the first word for family. :)

it seems sadly most german families are broken. Barely anyone said husband or Wife as their family member. Even at my work almost everyone has a broken marriage or relationship. It is big cultural shock for me!

On the other hand divorces are a sign that you don't have to stay in a relationship that doesn't work. People very likely establish relationships too hastily, but at the very least having the liberty to then separate is only a good thing.

yeah it's like that in all Western countries, and I think America is actually worse than Germany. It seems that it has to do with whether a society is statist or traditionalist. In traditionalist societies, the state is weak and people feel more responsibility towards their family and close friends, so corruption tends to be more widespread, but family ties are tighter, whereas in statist societies, the family unit is subdivided so that people are sufficiently separated that their loyalty lies more with the state than with all but their closest relations. These societies tend to have less corruption and better public infrastructure, but it comes at the cost of personal relationships and a certain sense of 'coziness' that comes with traditional societies. In the mid 20th century, the statist societies subdivided the family to the "nuclear" unit, but we have since entered a so-to-speak sub-neclear familial age in which most families are yet further subdivided to the point where units tend to be lone men and mothers and their children. I have been told that the best measure of statism vs traditionalism in a country is how much fun it is to go to a wedding there.

@@hedgeclipper418 I've never heard of those terms. But for sure, so called social progress seems to focus less on close family ties and togetherness. I believe in being nice to strangers but family unity is a thing that's hard to substitute.

@DC9FO
