Also, the character analysis of Michael's wives misses the point that both of them represent his two different countries. Michael sacrifices his legitimate life and reputation to protect his father, and is sent to Sicily. Apollonia represents Sicily personified. But she's destroyed, because Michael can't live in that world any more than his father who fled it many years before. Then Kay represents America of the 1940s-50s. She willingly embraces his life, knowing that he's a criminal, but believing that he has good intentions. When it's clear that Michael will never stop using criminal means to secure power, she destroys his future by unaliving their third child before it's born, and his split from her is like the very end of the old ways of his influence-peddling father. There's no more love for America in Michael. Just hate. People often miss this, but think of the beginning of the first film "I believe in America" and the end of the second, in which Michael slams the door on his ex-wife Kay (representing his connection to and love for America), and then kills his own brother.

I had never thought of many of the things you have pointed out, particularly the deeper connections to American and Japanese history in the story line. Part 3 really shows the decline , stresses and impact of leading a criminal organization. It really shows what happens when you dedicate your entire life to a cause but at the sacrifice of losing your family. Family was the entire reason Michael chose to take the mantle but just like a business owner who dedicated their life to a business it consumed him. Died alone, wasn't worth it

It's important to let people know The Godfather was released during the 70's years, which were the greatest time of American movies ever according to Quentin Tarantino and several filmmakers emerged like Scorsese, Ford Coppola, Spielberg or the own George Lucas with his Star Wars franchise. I'm 60 years old and the movies that came out then were fantastic. You could understand the actors as they spoke. Today's movies I need subtitles to understand them. People seem to be mumbling their way through the movie and the music is too loud. The studios still held their actors to a code of conduct, even though you still had scandals, but they were dealt with quickly.

Clipping Fredo wasn’t about vengeance or Fredo’s gripe with being passed over. The problem was that despite Fredo being dumb, he knew a lot about Michael and the internal workings of the Corleones. He could be manipulated again by Michael’s enemies or manipulated by the feds and become an informant like Pentangeli. But unlike Pentangeli who was shamed/threatened into recanting his confession by the presence of his brother at the hearing, Fredo would give everything up and there would be no way to stop him. So, Fredo was dangerous close and dangerous far away. Objectively, he had to be taken out. Michael regrets it because he is a family man at heart and he loved his parents and Fredo was their child (which is why he waited until Carmela Corleone passed away). But he still had to make that decision for the sake of himself and everyone else. Being the leader, he had to bear that burden and give that horrendous order. It’s easy for Connie to ask and beg Michael to spare Fredo but she wasn’t wearing the crown.

Yes, third one is supposed to be epilog. Duh..... bc its a third one Still, it was Coppola's greatest wish to do it that way. During commentary he specifically said that studios didn't think it was gonna be about Michael , he insisted it to be that way. Here is Godfather in a nut... Michael was a man who hada life plan and a dream. Part of that dream was Kay Adams, only woman he loved with his heart and cared about. When mafia war began Michael pushed Kay away from him and his family. It was dangerous for her to get involved. He did precisely bc he cared . After he committed murders he had to flee to Sicily. Months were passing by and song Speak softly love begins to play. Michael is walking through Sicily, he wipes the tear of his left eye. He is thinking about Kay. Don Tomassino's car pulls up Michael:" When can I come back home did Sonny say " Don Tomassino:" Sonny said your enemies know that you are in Sicily ".. He kept walking....he saw good looking chick. He got thunderbolt aka eraction. Thunderbolt is not romantic feeling which is why her father ran into his Cafe when he realized that chick filled in all the right places was his daughter. If you are uncomfortable with vulgarity use another word to articulate it. He was eract, in pain from losing Kay, so he went for it. He threatened to murder her father if he tells anyone about him hiding there. He didn't give a fuck if she knew he was a criminal coming from the mafia family He never told his parents he met her, noone knew he got married He came into her house disheveled and with armed bodyguards Or Coppola said " This is NOT the prince speaking, I mean really...." when commenting moment when Michael spoke to old Vitteli All opposite from Kay . He never told her about mafia war or that she was in danger being attached to him. He chased Apollonia in the middle of the mafia war, conned her into marrying him at the hight of the danger ( he had to marry her since there is no sex before marriage in Sicily) and killed her with the wedding. They found him, everybody knew he was in Sicily noone knew where. Village circus of their wedding during which Michael was completely detached ,he never ever looked at her is how they found him. After sex he was over her. He wasn't even laying in bed next to her but was sitting at the window. That scene exists but was deleted. He is teaching her how to drive a car bc he promised her. Material stuff is how he lure her into marrying him ..... she married him for money. But Michael doesn't want to do that, he is only excited in speaking with Don Tomassino who brings messages from US. He laughed at the idea that she wanted to be American wife.... He didn't wish for her to die, didn't plan for her to die he just didn't CARE ( word from the book and movie). . He had a normal human reaction when he realized that human being is gonna blew up. And than just moved on. He came home. He is speaking to his father " Pop, what about Sonny, what about Sicily. If we don't respond isn't family gonna be weak ".... deleted scene. What about Sicily? Well, Barzini tried to kill him but he got away. Vito tells him that they are weak but there is nothing he can do bc he gave his word to make a piece deal and bring Michael home safely. Out of love for his father and loyalty to his family Michael offered himself to save them. He waited more than a year to make sure it was safe he made a plan to legitimize the business and than and only than he went to New England to get Kay. After conversation with Vito, after Vito's words " I don't apologize for anything, I worked my hole life, everything I did I did for my family....women and children can be careless men can not ".... Michael decided to wack all 4 families and kill Moe Green. He too did everything for his family " He betrayed himself, he corrupted himself, he became his fathers puppet " .. Coppola during commentary That is the godfather. And every single gf is made by the exact se recipe

This video seems to say that Vito was against war with the 5 Families, and Michael waited until he was dead to unleash a war. But that's not what happened at all. Vito actually planned the murders of the heads of the 5 Families with Michael, and they'd been waiting for the right time to carry them out. Then Vito died, and that pushed plans a little in advance. That's all clear from both the film and the book.

32:32 I’m pretty sure this is wrong. I don’t think Michael has any intent of seperating from his family here. At this point he’s bought all the way in and is even in hiding in his family’s country and region etc. Michael being love and first sight with appleonia if anything likely makes him realize he’s more like his family after all and he’s loving that part of it and likely thinking it’s all worth it for the sweet love he’s found and connection to his roots via doing something that needed to be done. With appleonia he can have a type of wife that he couldn’t and doesn’t ever have with Kay. A wife well suited for the life he was going to be living, either a life associated with his families mob ties home in America or his root home in Sicily. He was prob thinking that he could teach her the American habits he wanted her to have and not have the ones he didn’t want her to. And he was probably right. Ironically though it’s one of those habits that leads to her death.
