Family of Skyline High School student Nathan Chanthavong is demanding justice after Oakland police say the 16-year-old was shot and killed. Police have not made any arrests in this case. He's one of three teens killed in Oakland on the same day in separate shootings.

Lost my nephew to the streets of Oakland in August 2023 so sad that this is life for these young people. I told my nephew to stay out of Oakland and can’t believe he lost his life to these mean streets. My nephew was Oaklands 77th homicide and my coworkers daughter 103 by October 2023 18 years old caught in a crossfire. Sh*t sad af! Prayers for this family that someone is brought to justice! Kids sneak out and do things that aren't safe no matter how great the family may be. Please don't blame this kid for doing what we all did at some point. It's not always possible for everyone to leave a dangerous area but thankfully me and my family had that option. We sold our house and moved out of Oakland in 2021. We woke up one day and there was a random bullet that we found shot through our house. No one was hurt but it was traumatizing. My husband and I took our baby and got the hell out of there. I hope the people who live in that house now are doing alright.

Shit happens in Oakland. Born, raised and escaped East Oakland. I still volunteer in OPS on occasion but I try to minimize my time in Oakland. Peeps commit crimes on a whim. Weird but real life experiences in the 70-90s: Dead drug dealer body dumped across the street, Mailman murdered a block away delivering mail, Homeless guy lived in car next to our house for a week and across from his Mom’s house - she let him in to eat and bathe but he slept in his car, Next door neighbor girl turned to prostitution to feed her drug habit, my elementary school classmate was her drug addicted boyfriend and asked me for $s whenever he saw me, 65 Oldsmobile stolen numerous times, 72 Caprice Classic - a rusted steel tank had a bullet hole in the driver door, sold it to a drug dealer for $500 as the car was solid for their line of work, Teen Drug Dealer Sex Offender totaled his new Ninja motorcycle into my car - gave me Sex Offender ID as identification, Dining room window had a bullet hole, Viet Jr High kid being harassed by homies in front of our house yanks a Uzi from duffel and gang dispersed without a shot, neighbor across the street had his parking brakes fail and truck rolled into our parked car, Neighbor two houses up shot his shotgun into sky July 4ths, Walking past drug dealer who didn’t like us impeding his sales traffic and asks us if Chinese people can catch bullets with their teeth? Yep, all real. Good stories too, Pointer Sisters lived nearby and you could hear their beautiful singing before they escaped. My family of nine (Parent, 5 Kids, 2 GPs) lived in a four BR house, all kids graduated from college, house never robbed as we had barred windows and a German shepherd in the backyard, and all survived that mess. Mom lived there until 1998 until moving away and walked a block to the bus stop without any issues for years. Lucky and fortunate.

Oakland is super scary, for those of us who have driven through or grown up in the bay, we all know this. I am always on edge in Oakland. It's not a safe place and now another child gone to a senseless shooting. Oakland doesn't care. It's super sad. I feel so sorry for the mother and siblings. I cried when they said he wasn't even old enough for a drivers license. Who does this to a child? 😢

I am betting this is exactly like that Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino. This was probably a good kid, but the area he lived in he was getting peer pressure to join a gang. That’s one possibility that he was out with the gang or he was just out and a gang jumped him or shot him.
